The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization.

Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization• Categorization: Identifying qualities that allow

items to belong to a group specific enough so that other related items are excluded.

• All of the items below are shapes

What categories could ALL three of these go into…

Please do not talk at this time Aug 31HW: No HW!

Page 2: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Please take out your Guns Germs and Steel Cornell Notes

Do you have a summary on pg.13A?

Staple your notes and chart and BSQ answer together and turn them in to the Turn In Box!

Make sure you have your name on it!

Page 3: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

• To create categories from this collection of shapes below qualities need to be identified that would include at least two of the shapes and exclude any remaining shapes.

• While stars, bolts and clouds are all shapes because they have a perimeter, a cloud is not a pointy shape because it lacks jagged edges.

What category could only two of these objects fit into, while the third one didn’t fit?

Page 4: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Why we look for more specific categories…?

• When you look for something that parts of a group have in common, you are going Below the Surface. You are doing more advanced thinking.

• This makes your thinking, your argument and your writing better!

Page 5: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

This is a process…• Today, you are learning a process for identifying

categories and what goes in them.• There is more to this process that you will learn later

to make your writing even more advanced. • This is the first step.

Organization Practice:

Get an envelope with colored shapes in it….

Make a group of 4 with your pod.Together decide the following:

Which of these shapes belong together? Put these shapes in groups according to how they are similar. You decide what the shapes in each group have in common.

For each group, explain what the shapes have in common. Why did you put them together.

What shapes would you put in the following groups?

Round shapesRegular shapesLight colored shapes

Categories and sub categories are like Russian Nesting Dolls

Think about the way we organized the shapes…

• Category 1 • Category 2 • Category 3

Put this chart on pg. 14A and fill it in with the shape categories we came up with and what goes in each one…

What’s Up?

• On a half sheet, tell me how you are doing!• How is High School treating you? • What are your concerns?• Is this class going ok for you? Other classes

going well?• What could I do differently to help you more?

• You have the option of making this anonymous.

Categorizing Chinese InnovationsThink back to all the cards you saw on China in the Cultural Diffusion Activity.

These are all things invented or developed by the Chinese before 1400.Background:

In the 1400’s Chinese goods were the best goods being produced anywhere.

Chinese quality was legendary and their technology was the most advanced in the world.

1. As we watch this short Video on the innovation of China, use the cards in the envelopes to put these innovations into categories.

2. Then, give each category a title.

3. Be ready to explain why you put the inventions in the category you chose.

1. Now that you have some ideas about cards that match, create groups of cards that fit together.

2. These groups are categories. Give each category a title. Write your titles on the bottom of 15A of your notebook with space underneath to write in the items on each card.

3. Be ready to explain why you put the inventions in the category you chose.

Pg. 17A Writing Great Thesis Statements- Levels 1 and 2Please glue your half sheet on the top of pg. 17A

There are three levels of thesis statements. Here are the first two:• Level one- restate the prompt as a statement.

Prompt: Why would Columbus risk his life to find a sea route to Asia?

Level 1: Columbus did risk his life to find a sea route to Asia.

• Level two- restate the prompt as a statement but include the word “because” and say why.

Level 2: Columbus risked his life to find a sea route to Asia because ____________, ________________, and ___________________.

Level 2 thesis statements are so useful because the things you include after your “because” as the answer to your “why” become the three body sections of our essay or outline. This kind of thesis gives you a clear road map for where the essay and your reasoning are going.

How many reasons?

• 3 is the standard number of reasons given for something in history.

• However, I would rather have 1 really well done, well supported reason with lots of details than 3 poorly supported reasons.

• Think about what you know and use the amount you know to guide you.

• Don’t forget to look at your notes for ideas!

Page 36: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Now, on the same paper, list some examples of each one…

Reason 1 Reason 2 Reason 3

These Reasons are categories just

like you did before! You will use

them to write your answer to the

prompt!

Pgs 12A, and 14A both have good information to use. Think of the videos we’ve seen too.

• Details and specifics on how a sea route could make Columbus rich:

Page 39: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Now, on the same paper, list some examples of each one…

He wanted to get rich

He could buy and then sell silk, spices, fireworks, porcelain and tea for lots of money. He would have a monopoly on the trade route and he could sell the rights to the map!He would not have to pay taxes to the empires of the Silk Road

The Silk Road was dangerous

These Reasons are categories

just like you did before! You will

use them to write your answer to

the prompt!

What categories did you make? What did you put in them?

Which ones have the best details?

Page 41: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Now, on the same paper… Explain

• Answer: Why is getting rich enough to make Columbus risk his life?

• ANSWER WHY!• Use the model: Getting rich is worth

Columbus risking his life because _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Page 42: The next thing we are going to do is practice Categorization. Pg. 14A- Defining Categorization

Now, on the same paper… Explain

• Answer: Why were these reasons enough to make Columbus risk his life?

• ANSWER WHY!• Use the model: These things were worth

Columbus risking his life because if he could make it home to sell his goods, he would never need to work again. This was his only chance to get rich as a poor peasant.

• He also wanted to prove his theory correct.
