Program Notes:

Imagine you love to dance… it’s easy - you just go and dance! Now imagine you are a

hippo who loves to dance. Suddenly, it’s not so easy. It’s difficult to be light, delicate and

graceful when you weigh 1.5 tons! Sadly, you are condemned to watch from afar,

stealing glimpses through distant windows of satin dresses twirling, tall and elegant suits

gracefully gliding across the ballroom floor, as the sound of music and laughter floats out

into the night.

One summer evening, as the guests arrive for a masquerade ball, it all becomes too much.

The sequined costumes, the mysterious masks and the squeals of delight are irresistible;

you simply must dance! You do your best to conceal your identity under a beautiful tulle

gown and feathered mask. As gracefully as you can, you try to join in, amidst strange

glances and the objections of some snooty onlookers. You demand the right to dance!

Finally, they relent, and you get your chance. Awkward and a little clumsy at first, you

find your rhythm and the Ball hits full swing. You get lost in the music - spinning and

twirling without a care in the world. All too soon, the party is over. With one last

pirouette, you disappear into the night. Who knew… hippos really can dance!

About the Composer:

Tim is an established writer for both Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. He is passionate

about writing fresh and interesting original works for junior level ensembles. His Concert

Band works have featured on festival lists around Australia, receiving international

recognition at The Midwest Clinic – An International Band and Orchestra Conference in

Chicago. His solo works also feature on the AMEB syllabus.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Education (Melbourne), a Master’s degree in Jazz Composition

and Arranging (ANU), and a Master’s Certificate in Composition for Film & TV

(Berklee).

In addition to his work as a composer, Tim has been a brass teacher and ensemble

director at both primary and secondary school levels for nearly 20 years. He is also in

demand as a clinician and adjudicator. He currently lives in Melbourne with his wife

and three young children.

Rehearsal Notes:

The tempo should start as a gentle, lilting waltz feel. It could almost be taken as one beat

in a bar. From [115] onwards, the piece essentially keeps getting faster and louder.

Between [115] and [154] you will definitely need to move into one in bar (if you haven’t

already).

Several key changes and lots of chromatic notes make this piece a potential wrong notes

disaster. Be sure to look through your part carefully and make sure you know exactly

which notes you should be playing. Recognising chromatic scale passages when they

occur should help you get the right notes without having to worry about every single

accidental.

Keeping chromatically moving triads in tune and in balance can be quite tricky. There are

a number of passages that would benefit from playing each chord - one at a time at a time

- This will enable you to hear exactly what is going on harmonically and to achieve a

good sectional balance.

Clarinets - passages beginning at [99] and [107]

Saxes - passages beginning at [37], [49], [99] and [107]

Trumpets - passages beginning at [49], [99] and [107]

Brass - the passage beginning at [115]

This piece provides plenty of opportunities for the low brass section to shine. Be careful

not to get too over-enthusiastic and lose all sense of taste and musicality. But hey, how

often does the tuba get a solo - make the most of it!
