I usually attend the same events every year and after a while they blend together. This year I was encouraged to attend and drive the Targa California 2019 from June 5th to 8th. So, arrangements were made in late February for hotels and shipping Athena, my

1973 BMW 3.0 CSi, out to California.

As the time for shipping grew closer, I arranged to have all Athena’s fluids changed, buy new rear tires and as it turned out, her D-Jet wiring harness rebuilt to cure a random misfire. I’m very fortunate the problem happened close to home and not in California. Athena was picked up from

Summertime in Northern New Englandtext by: Walter McNally, Treasurer | photos by: Martin Callahan, Editor

I was going to title this article “Summertime Blues” but we are finally having some real sum-mertime weather! About time I say, seeing as how, as I write this, it’s almost July 4th! Prior to this it was somewhat cold and rainy with a noticeable lack of sunshine. Of course, when you read this it will be after the first of August and summer will have begun that slippery slide into fall. I’ve often thought how nice it would be to have a convertible for these won-derful summer days, even if I need-ed to run the air conditioning and slather on the sunscreen. I finally came to the realization that not only is warm weather too short lived up here in these parts but there is also an overabundance of clouds and rain. Overabundance being a relative term of course and subject to interpretation; one per-son’s monsoon is another person’s drought.

Driving with the sun shining in the car and the wind blowing is a big part of the fun for me. My first BMW, back in the last century, had a sunroof. It was the first time I had a car with a sunroof and I re-ally enjoyed it. I could open it up in the warm weather, of course, and in the winter time as well. I would just take care of the snow and crank the heat up to maximum. It was pretty nice. I’ve come to the conclusion that a sunroof is sim-ply more versatile and usable than a convertible, not that I wouldn’t rent one for a weekend if given the right circumstances.

Speaking of summer, nothing says it better than a road trip. My favor-ite is along the ocean with the win-dows down and the salt air blow-ing right at you. When I was young, the family would usually go to

Seabrook or Hampton; now I take my family to York Beach. Coming around the first curve on Route 1A where we can see the ocean, a person would think the car was packed with a bunch of dogs. We all stick our heads out the window to get a lung full of salt air, not to mention the tasty aroma of fried clams and onion rings! My mouth is watering already. Another fa-vorite is the White Mountains. We spent a weekend in the Franconia Notch and Mount Washington Val-ley area; went to the top of Mount Washington on the Cog Railway. What an adventure; I highly rec-ommend it! We also went to the Flume; I hadn’t been there since I was a kid. It sure brought back lots of memories.

The BMW was flawless, as it should be! The only incident was a driver’s side flat tire here in

Vermont. It was rural four lane road with a divider, it was not an interstate; the shoulders were very narrow. The flat happened on a curve with a short line of sight. Not feeling terribly safe at the prospect of being in the travel lane to investigate, I pulled into a turn-around to get out of the way of traffic. Luckily for me the local county sheriff came by a short time later. I thought he was going to make sure that nothing was seriously wrong. Nope. First thing he does is spits out a wad of chewing tobacco and says he thought I was making an illegal U-Turn. For a minute I imagined it was Jackie Gleason chasing Burt Reynolds. In truth though, I have a great deal of respect for law enforcement people. They have a dangerous job protecting all of us and keeping the roads safe.

So, what’s the next road trip? Well there are a few planned for the summer/fall. We are going to Cooperstown and the Finger Lakes area of New York. The annual pilgrimage to York Beach will take place in late summer. Whenever I’m in York I’m always tempted to purchase one of those “slightly used” police cars that seem to always be for sale there. My reasoning is that cars in front of me will move over and I can go faster! What is more likely to happen, and I do it all the time, is drivers will automatically slow down.

Oh well. The mother of all road trips this year will be to Oktoberfest! More on that in a future edition.

Happy Summer motoring to all!

WMC 2018 Financial Reportby: Bruce Bergeron, Treasurer

As the WMC Treasurer it is my pleasure to report 2018 was another successful year. Expenses were at or below budget and income exceeded budget; two very good things.

As a result, the WMC ended 2018 with positive net income of $7,423. I can assure all 600+ members this result is no accident. In fact,

2018 is the 4th consecutive year of positive income, taking the Chapter’s checking account from nearly solvent to a healthy $30,000. The board feels this is an adequate level for an organization our size and plans to maintain it moving forward.

Our 2019 budget is income neutral, meaning we plan to break even, spending the same amount as we take in.

How did the Chapter achieve these results? Profitable driving events and reduced newsletter expenses are the biggest reasons. Everyone involved should take a well-deserved bow.

Financial Overview2018

Will Gran’s one-owner 1972 Bavaria 3.0

2019 THE VINTAGE GATHERINGby: Will Gran

The 2019 Vintage at Asheville and Hot Springs, North Carolina from May 17 – 19 was my third Vintage experience with the SENIOR6, my one-owner 1972 Bavaria 3.0.

My “Virgin Vintage” was the 2017 gathering which didn’t go well on the 1,000-mile drive from Bow, New Hampshire to Asheville, North Carolina. Before Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on I-81 the SENIOR6 experienced sudden ignition electrical failure and had to be flat-bedded to a repair garage. It was fixed next morning and I continued on my way to Asheville. During the final hour driving before making Asheville I began to hear a disturbing noise from the transmission or differential which forewarned of a growing problem.

On that Saturday, I drove SENIOR6 very sensibly and carefully to the Lawn Event at Hot Springs and back to Asheville without it failing completely. The Bavaria had to be hauled back to VSR in Bow and I rented a car to get home. All in all, not a good adventure, but still worth the experience.

At the 2018 Vintage, I took in the ICON exhibit at the BMW CCA Foundation in Greer, South Carolina, on Friday celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the 2002 sedan. I left the Saturday Lawn Event at Hot Springs early to drive to Athens, Georgia for a family

wedding at 5:00 pm. No, that wasn’t my wedding! The following day I drove to Dayton, Ohio to visit family again, then a 2-day drive home to Bow. A 2,994 mile ten-day trip with the SENIOR6 without incident or concern. Redemption!

For both 2017 and 2018 Vintages, I drove “Solo Lobo” as I do on

almost all of my long-distance driving trips. Or as some cohort might call it, “Go Solo Lobo Commando”; i.e., “By oneself, alone, left with one’s own thoughts about the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. After all, isn’t that what these

Vintage gatherings are really about?

But those are stories for a different time. This is about the 2019 Vintage.

Jeff Kipperman, a resident of Bow who has a sweet 1987 BMW 325i convertible in black, contacted me about The Vintage. I persuaded him to

register for it and we would caravan together this time. I checked with Andrew Wilson (Pine Tree Chapter) about any New England caravan groups he knew about. He was going in a caravan group from New England that we could join.

Day 1

Wednesday morning, May 15, Jeff with his father Dick riding shotgun, and I with SENIOR6, left Bow at 6:15 am to join the caravan at the Charlton Service Plaza on I-90 Massachusetts Pike, an hour’s drive from Bow. When we arrived, the other caravan members were there; Rob Siegel (1973 2002), Jose Rosario (E46), Andrew Wilson (E28 M5) and Bob Sawtelle (2002). Unfortunately, Bob Sawtelle decided to forego this trip because he had been experiencing a medical issue that hadn’t cleared up sufficiently and needed more attention. It now was a five-car caravan.

The route plan was to exit I-90 several miles west of the Charlton Service Plaza to I-84 West through Hartford, Connecticut to the Merritt Parkway and across the Tappan Zee Bridge and eventually pick up I-78 West through Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Jeff and I were unfamiliar with that serpentine route and uncertain about our ability to navigate through a thickly-populated area with heavy morning rush-hour traffic and stay with a five-car caravan. We opted to stay on I-84 West to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where we would intersect with I-81 South. We all agreed to link up the caravan again in Pennsylvania at the first service plaza after I-78 West merged with I-81 South. When the other three peeled off toward the Merritt Parkway, Jeff and I continued on I-84 West toward Newburgh and Scranton.

When we started the drive in Bow that morning the weather was wintery and cloudy with the temperature near freezing. Well before we crossed the New York

– Pennsylvania border, the clouds had given way to bright sunshine and warming temperatures. At our first gas-up at Milford, Pennsylvania, Jeff’s 325i convertible top was stowed away for the remainder of the day. We continued on to Scranton where we exited on to I-81 South.

After I-81 and I-78 merged, we arrived at the first service plaza on I-81 about 10 miles east of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in early afternoon. The other three-car caravan had not arrived yet, so we waited 15 minutes before texting them. A quick response from Rob Siegel was, “Andrew’s M5 has a major oil problem”. Not god news. I had visions of a really expensive repair coming for Andrew when I digested the words “major oil problem”. Rob advised Jeff and I to not wait for them and continue our two-car caravan without them.

We continued on I-81 South past Harrisburg and Carlisle through the panhandles of Maryland and West Virginia into Virginia and down the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Traffic increased considerably, especially the ubiquitous 18-wheelers which at times moved in and out of the left lane like a herd of bull elephants in mating season vying for an advantage position in pursuit of that lone cow elephant up ahead somewhere.

We reached the hotel at Staunton, Virginia, our stay for the night, around 5:00 pm.

Day 2

Thursday, we continued on I-81 South. Before Wytheville, Virginia, we exited to I-77 South toward Statesville, North Carolina, where we took I-40 West into the Asheville area and the Clarion Inn, the host hotel in Fletcher, arriving mid-afternoon.

For our two-car caravan it had been a non-incident, non-issue drive of about 1,000 miles. Not so for the three-car caravan. Andrew Wilson’s M5 “major oil problem” was a loss of most its oil due to an oil sensor gone bad. With a few quarts of oil added they were able to get the M5 to a nearby BMW dealership in Allentown, Pennsylvania. A replacement sensor was not readily available so it remained at the dealership for Andrew to retrieve on his return home after The Vintage.

Day 3

Friday morning was a one-hour drive to the BMW CCA Foundation and museum facility located adjacent to the BMW production plant in Greer, South Carolina. This was opening day of the year-long PASSION exhibit celebrating the 50th year of the BMW CCA organization which was started in 1969 in Boston by a small group of enthusiastic owners of BMW 2002s. Over the years it has grown to be recognized as the largest single-marque car club in the world.

The PASSION exhibit was incredibly informative. There were 22 privately owned BMWs on loan that will remain on display during 2019. These were selected specifically to represent the spectrum of BMWs from the mid-1960s vintage Neu Klasse to a 2015 i8 Coupe. Jackie Jouret, noted BMW historian and writer

for the Roundel, and author, presented a tour of the BMWs on display describing the uniqueness and significance of each car, including ownership history. The current owner of each BMW was

present and talked about his/her experiences with it.

Back at the Clarion Inn, the flow of arriving BMWs was filling the parking lot to capacity. Friendships were reconnected and life’s happenings shared since the previous year, or new friendships were being formed. The BMW CCA membership reputation of “pay-it-forward” camaraderie was on display with offers of advice and insight, wrenching tools and replacement parts, maintenance manuals and manual labor. I witnessed a brake rebuild on an E-3 2500 sedan being done in the hotel parking lot and a shattered driveshaft guibo on a 2002 that needed to be replaced.

Day 4

Saturday was The Vintage main event gathering in Hot Springs. An easy 50-minute drive, more or less, over some pleasant curvy well-maintained roads through green hills and valleys. Occasional groups of a few BMWs in trail passed me taking an opportunity to experience their BMWs’ performance and agility.

Over 650 vintage BMWs had been pre-registered by enthusiastic owners for this Lawn Event. The only rule seemed to be a BMW must be driven there under its own power and upon arriving be directed by staff to an available area and parking space. If a

particular cohort of like BMWs or a series wanted to be together, they had to arrive together or as a caravan and park where directed. If a crusty “patina” 2002 wound up parked next to a pristine black M5, so be it. This was a gathering, not a competition. It’s a “show and tell event” or maybe a “see and ask event”. No trophy or award for a concours or cleanest car.

Some seldom-seen BMWs present at this venue were a couple 700 coupes, a couple Isetta 600s, a stretch limo, a battered battle-weary former 745 of uncertain

origin, converted to a touring wagon, a really neat looking black 2002 conversion to a one-of-a-kind 2002 touring wagon. Every

BMW had a story worth telling and worth hearing.

In early afternoon, a few enthusiasts bade farewell to friends old and new and drove slowly out the venue exit to start the long drive home. Diehard enthusiasts remained until late afternoon. Scott Sturdy and the staff of volunteers who planned this epic weekend event, began to compare their observations and notes taken, to use for planning The Vintage 2020.

I remained in Asheville for a day then took “a road not travelled before” on the way home to Bow.

Day 5

Sunday I toured the Vanderbilt Family Biltmore Estate and Gardens, completed in 1895 on 8,000 acres. This is a must-see 250-room home with landscaped gardens inspired by European 1700s and 1800s era estates such as Versailles in France. On the way back to the hotel I found a privately-owned antique auto museum in Omni Grove Park, at

Grovewood Village. This small auto museum was established in 1966 by a local Cadillac-Pontiac dealer and now displays 19 cars ranging from a 1913 Ford Model T to a 1959 Edsel Corsair; and a 1922 American LaFrance fire truck.

Day 6

Monday was an easy day’s drive east to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a personal historical mecca that has been on my “bucket list” for years.

Day 7

Tuesday, I visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park. I stood on windswept Kill Devil Hill sand dune, where in October 1900, Wilber and Orville watched and studied birds in flight and flew their kites and gliders of different shapes and sizes to understand how an aero-wing planform should be shaped. Then down on the sand flats nearby, where on December 17, 1903, they successfully achieved the first four powered flights in history; from 120 feet in 12 seconds to 852 feet in 59 seconds. Another “bucket list” item checked!

Day 8

Wednesday I was at the National Military Park at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (my fourth visit there) and toured all 16 Civil War battlefield sites where critical battles were waged during three days in July 1863. At each visit, I have been in awe of what was accomplished there by the commanders, officers and soldiers in such a brutal conflict; including what the civilian community endured in the following weeks, months and years.

Two more days, and the SENIOR6 and I were home in Bow. It was ten days of accommodating weather, mostly good roads, and no incidents over those 2,894 miles. Further redemption!

Lighthouse Tourby: Andrew Wilson, President

On Sunday, June 23rd we had per-fect weather for a tour of the light-houses in South Portland & Cape Elizabeth.

The tour started at Bug Light & Liberty Ship Park. The smallest light on the tour at the mouth of Portland Harbor, is also the most accessible. A short walk on the breakwater gives wonderful views of Portland, Fort Gorges and the islands. Near the entrance to the park is a full-size replica of a Lib-erty Ship bow, during WWII these ships were mass-produced at the shipyards of South Portland.

Our next stop was the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park on Cape Elizabeth. Last I knew

this light was the most pho-tographed lighthouse in the US. It’s also accessible and its loca-tion perched on the rocks captures the pure essence of what peo-ple love about lighthouses.

Our last stop was Two Lights at the Southern edge of Cape Elizabeth. These lights are not accessible, they are on private land. The best part of Two Lights is The Lobster Shack, and the quintessential rocky shore, a perfect location small restaurant.

Vintage Sports & Restoration in Bedford, New Hampshire on May 23rd, she arrived in Torrance, California on June 2nd. I flew from Portland (PWM) to Los Angeles (LAX) on June 3rd and took a taxi from the airport to the shipper’s office and holding building. Athena was brought out into the parking lot, I looked her over for any shipping damage, aside from some dirt she was fine. Soon Athena and I were off to fuel up and get some lunch. I had been up since 2:30 am Eastern, and finished lunch at 3 pm Pacific.

I arrived two days early to do some sightseeing and adjust to Pacific Time, a 3-hour difference. Planned to drive through Beverly Hills, visit the Santa Monica Pier and drive around Malibu. Well, I never made it to Beverly Hills. On Tuesday I drove to the Santa Mon-ica Pier via Malibu, stopping along the way for a few pictures. I really enjoyed the carnival atmosphere and amusement park on the pier. I enjoyed the street magicians, musicians and dancers. I, along with four others, were picked out of a crowd, as “volunteers” for a dance show in which a perform-er did a front flip over us! On the far end of the pier was a jazz band from a Utah High School; they were simply amazing. When I was done in Santa Monica, I drove through Malibu again then up Malibu Can-yon Road, and back to the hotel for dinner.

Wednesday, I stayed around Simi Valley and cleaned up Athena. Targa participants began arriving at 3 pm. By 6 pm almost everyone had arrived. There were a lot of Porsches from 356As to early ‘70s 911s. BMWs made up a quarter of

Porsche & Mercedes guys and waved as they passed. As the “faster” cars passed, we made our way down to the desert side. We had a bit of fun do-ing a water crossing at the end of the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, even-tually making our way to Paso Robles. We would spend 2 nights there. Saturday, we made an enormous 175-mile loop. Making stops at the Pozo Saloon, in small town of Pozo, for lunch. Then it was another 120 miles back to Paso Robles.

At times the Targa pace was very spirited, other times we were driving slowly so we wouldn’t damage the cars. Still, one Porsche 356B bottomed out on a dip in the road and cracked the oil sump or oil cooler leaving an oil trail for 2 miles. The owner was lucky and turned off the engine before there was any real damage and the car was repaired by the evening. A much less fortunate Lotus Esprit Turbo went up in flames when a high-pressure fuel line failed.

At the awards presentation on Saturday night, The People’s Choice Award went to Dirk & Alexandra de Groen for their BMW 1600GT, which was the highlight of the night.

Sunday morning, I met up with friends to drive to Monterey. We met at the 101 side of the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road and drove very quickly to the ocean side. Again, in 2nd gear at 3K rpm, going between 30-35 mph. Then it

was up CA1 through Big Sur and into Carmel where we had lunch at the Baja Cantina. After we ate, we headed over to my friend’s storage space and dropped off our cars. Athena will be spending the Summer in Monterey in storage, waiting for my return in August for Car Week. Then a tour of three west coast National Parks, which will certainly be another story.

the registered cars, 2002s, 3.0 Coupes, a 2800 sedan, and a 1968 1600 GT. I knew most of the BMW people and it was nice to catch up with each other.

The Targa California is a fun rally, not a timed distance rally. The Targa rules are simple, leave point A, follow the directions, and arrive at point B. The first day was from Simi Valley through Santa Barbara to Pismo. During the day we stopped at a car & motorcycle collection. The sec-

ond day started at Pismo Beach with a majority of the cars lining up on the beach; the only BMW on the sand was the 1600GT. The rest of the BMW group literally headed for the hills and up CA1 from Morrow Bay to the Nacimien-to-Ferguson Road. It is an amazingly twisty 2nd gear at 3K rpm thrill ride. It is my favorite road in California. We made it to the summit well ahead of the
