While solving the problem of food insecurity will

require a concerted effort from all levels of government, there is a great deal being done at a more grassroots level to help make sure Torontonians can put food on their plates.

Organizations such as

Community Food Centres Canada (CFC), FoodShare, Building Roots and the Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (TYFPC) are engag-ing vulnerable Torontonians through a variety of programs and initiatives, providing not only food but opportunity.

CFC Chief Operating Officer Kathryn Scharf (www.cfccanada.ca) said aware-ness of food security issues is growing, as is action to

combat them. Her orga-nization originated out of The Stop Community Food Centre on Davenport Road, and now there are three such organizations in Toronto and eight across Canada.

Sprawling, gray and overlooked for decades, North York’s Duke Heights is suddenly a place of possibilities.

The whole district between Dufferin and Keele streets, north of Sheppard Avenue, now has a name, a brand, a businesses improvement area (BIA) and its own security force on overnight patrols.

While it has very few homes, it is bursting with about 2,500 businesses, ranging from corner cafes to giant furniture makers Global Upholstery and Teknion.

“There’s a funeral home, three bespoke tailors, a place where you can buy really cheap socks,” said Matias de Dovitiis, executive director of Duke Heights BIA (http://www.dukeheights.ca), which formed

What started out with a crowd of 250 and a modest number of performers has grown to thousands of spectators and high-quality entertainment in the heart of North York.

Now in its seventh year, Cultura Festival will take over Mel Lastman Square every Friday night from July 8 to 29. The free outdoor festival on

Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue, is made up of dance, music, film, buskers and inter-national cuisine.

3 special report

she said, adding that finding local partners willing to help deliver services is a key part of what her organization does.

Scharf noted that while teaching healthy food skills, offering cooking groups and classes, providing after-school programs where kids can have healthy snacks and creating community gardens are all great ways to combat food insecurity, the key is in making sure more Canadians can earn a living wage.

However, that’s something that will only come about when governments mandate it, said Scharf. “The key is to fight poverty, fight for housing, increase wages and social assistance rates. We can push for those things at a grassroots level, but we can’t make them happen.”

Darcy Higgins of Building Roots (www.pushfoodfor-ward.com/buildingroots) agreed that a wage policy, along with better social sup-port, is the best permanent solution, adding his orga-nization is doing its best in the meantime to bring food access to where people need it most.

“We’re trying to bring fresh food at affordable prices to where people need it most,” he said. “We have a Moss Park Market that just opened in a shipping container on Toronto Community Housing property, and that’s a model we’re hoping to rep-licate in other communities. We’re exploring and looking for partners across the city, especially in the suburbs.”

He said those battling food insecurity can also benefit from connecting with community agencies that can help teach them to cut costs and stretch their food

budgets further, by joining cooking programs run by not-for-profits, or by grow-ing their own food, perhaps in community gardens near where they live.

The Ashbridge Estate near Queen and Greenwood is a prime example of using avail-able space to bolster food security. A new community garden has been planted there by Syrian refugees to complement an existing community garden at the site. “There are so many communities – especially lower-income communities – where there aren’t stores for people to buy fresh food,” Higgins said. “It tends to be more convenience stores (instead of affordable grocery stores with more healthy

options) in those communi-ties, so you have to look at other solutions.”

Toronto Youth Food Policy Council (www.tyfpc.ca) co-chair Melana Roberts said projects to boost food secu-rity can range from relatively small in scale, such as new pop-up food markets being launched at TTC subway sta-tions at Downsview, Kipling and Victoria Park stations, to Malvern Eats – a community lunch that hosts as many as 300 guests – to the CEED (community eco economic development), which could see hydro corridors turned into community gardens.

“We’re working with Toronto Public Health and looking at four different sites where (CEED) could work,”

she said, noting those sites include Rexdale, northeast Scarborough, Flemingdon Park and the Danforth and Victoria Park area.

FoodShare (www.food-share.net), meanwhile, helps organizations bring food to communities by combining their buying power. Rather than having each organiza-tion make connections and buy goods, they can pool their resources and make bulk purchases from the Ontario Food Terminal, stretching those dollars further. Many other organi-zations are helping to keep vulnerable Torontonians fed, but they recognize their work is simply addressing the symptoms of poverty that leads to food insecurity.

JOANNA LAVOIE [email protected]

Food is an essential pillar of city building. That’s the premise behind a recently released report

titled Food by Ward: Food Assets and Opportunities in Toronto.

The report, which took about a year to put together, was initially launched by the Toronto Food Policy Council (TFPC) as a way to engage with municipal candidates during the 2014 election on the topic of food security.

Now that the election is over, the TFPC is continuing to work with elected officials as well as community organizations and individuals to advocate for more food security programs and initiatives.

Using resources from Toronto Public Health, Food by Ward provides a snapshot of food assets across Toronto’s 44 municipal wards, said Rachel Gray, chair of the Toronto Food Policy Council, during a recent interview.

Gray, executive director of The Stop Community Food Centre in the Annex, said the findings of Food by Ward can and should be used to help identify food priorities and come up with ways to improve the avail-ability of affordable, healthy food across the city.

She said the areas that tend to be lacking the most are the suburban, and often lower-income, parts of the city where people usually need a vehicle to go to the grocery store. The outer portions of the city are also often where marginalized individuals live, including those on fixed incomes, and newcomers.

However, food insecurity problems can be improved when people and organizations come together, Gray said.

A staged sit-in protest by the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter last Sunday at the Pride Parade certainly has people talking.

But are they talking for the right reasons? Given the status as an Honoured Group for the

parade, Black Lives Matter effectively halted the parade for half an hour as they issued a list of nine demands.

The annual parade that capped off Pride Month only began to move again once Pride Toronto execu-tive director Mathieu Chantelois signed the docu-ment, seemingly agreeing to those demands, which included reinstating and committing to increase community stages as well as the removal of police

floats in Pride marches and parades.

The latter, not surprisingly, has been getting a lot of attention with Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack con-demning Pride Toronto for sign-ing the paper and accusing Black Lives Matter of “hijacking” the

grand event Sunday. People on Twitter had plenty to say about it too,

many siding with police and recognizing their contri-butions over the years to support the growing Pride movement.

It seems counterproductive and counterintuitive to exclude police from a parade celebrating inclusiv-ity, especially as some in the LGBT community also work in the police force.

While the protest brought both public and media attention to Black Lives Matter, the reasons for the protest were overshadowed by the tactics. People are talking about whether it was appropriate or justified to do what they did during the parade, rather than how events like Pride can be even more inclusive and welcoming to other marginalized communities.

Perhaps continuing the dialogue at the upcoming community meetings on anti-racism that the pro-vincial government is hosting this summer is a good place to start.

The first meeting is scheduled to take place in Toronto on July 14 with another in Scarborough on Sept. 13.

For effective change to occur, Black Lives Matter must first gain the public’s empathy and support for their cause.

Our VieW

Continue dialogue of inclusiveness

Tactics overshadow issues in the Pride Parade protest

Black Lives Matter disruption of Pride Parade what you’d expectIt’s hard to know what to make of the Black Lives Matter – Toronto (BLMTO)/ Pride Toronto dust-up.

That, of course, won’t stop me from weighing in on the spectacle – even if it wasn’t really much of one.

To recap: Black Lives Matter – Toronto, a group that has seen great success staging discomfiting public protests, accepted an invi-tation from Pride Toronto (another group that has in the past seen great success staging discomfiting public protests) to be an “hon-oured guest” at this year’s Pride Parade.

And things went exactly as you’d expect: a discom-fiting public protest, in the form of a disruption to the Pride Parade that was only able to resume once Pride Toronto had “agreed” to a list of demands from BLMTO.

Among those demands? No coppers please, at future Pride parades.

The pearl-clutching began. The Toronto Police Association demanded

Pride Toronto apologize for signing off on the deal. Mayor John Tory, through his office, joined voices on Toronto council includ-ing local councillor and longtime Pride supporter Kristyn Wong-Tam to make it clear that police should be welcomed at the parade for if nothing else than the purpose of keeping open lines of communication between the LGBTQ2S community and the police.

And finally Pride Toronto’s executive director Mathieu Chantelois made it clear himself that signing a deal with BLMTO, while he was trying to simply get the parade moving, wasn’t going to be binding, and ultimately, Pride and the community would make the final decision. It would be an excellent bet that police will be back in the parade next year.

It’s tempting to look at all

this from the outside and dismiss it as silliness, or an “inside-baseball” dispute… tempting to see this as a bit of a nadir for Black Lives Matter, pulling a disruptive stunt at what was otherwise a healing event for a com-munity still processing the massacre in Orlando – all to extract promises that won’t be kept, and for the most part are over internal Pride matters that might have been dealt with as well using nothing more than a few stern emails.

That is, however, missing the point of successful pro-test movements like Black Lives Matter, which are combatting not only very small issues, but very, very large ones.

A few days earlier, Metropolitan Community Church pastor and gay rights activist Brent Hawkes stood with Police Chief Mark Saunders for what had been billed an historic apology by police for the bath house raids in the early 1980s that destroyed the lives of closeted gay

men, and ruined busi-nesses.

An apology was a big thing, but also a small thing – and Hawkes spoke that day of how he had contacted the chief, and negotiated an apology, and that sometimes, negotia-tion was necessary.

The only trouble? At the end of all that negotiation, Saunders did not in fact apologize; he very deliber-ately expressed “regrets” for police actions, and prom-ised to do better — and really, with that, closed the matter as far as police were concerned.

It’s comforting to think that change can happen with comfortable negotia-tion. But the reality is that genuine change requires an irritant to motivate it. Black Lives Matters understands that, and so of course they showed up in full, irritating glory on Sunday.

Good hearing but trouble with conversation?A lot of people have trouble catchingwhat people say, especially in groupsituations, despite having goodhearing. What a lot of people don’tknow is that this may be caused bydamage to the so-called motor oramplifier function of special cells inthe ear. Anew type of hearing aid canhelp balance this out.

A great many people have difficultyhearing others clearly on a daily basis.Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music oftenmake it challenging to catch whatpeople say. This results in themhavingto repeatedly ask questions, strainingto hear and perhaps increasinglyavoidingdiscussions in large groups.Asmentioned earlier, this may be causedby malfunctions in special cells in theear. According to a theory proposedby hearing researchers, “motor cells”are a type of hair cell responsible foramplifying quiet sounds. They vibrateup to 20,000 times per second. If thesehair cells do not work properly thenquiet sounds are no longer naturally

amplified in the ear and loud soundsno longer dampened.

This leads tomore difficulty in hearingwhat is said in a lot of situations. Ifthe hair cells have been damaged bynoise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speechanddampen loud ambient noise can bea good solution for most people.

Hair cells in the ear move veryrapidly and can act as an amplifier ordampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplifyspeech and dampen loud noises.

This improvement in hearing can beachieved for some clients through thenew Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technologycomes in a miniature casing thatcan significantly enhance the user’sability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the personyou are speaking to and can alsorecognize if ambient noise increasesin the background.

Connect Hearing is currently lookingto improve hearing for people whoexperience these challenges and wantto try this new technology. We areparticularly interested in candidateswho have trouble hearing speech inthe situations discussed above and canbenefit froma trial to seewhether theynotice an improvement.

Interested people can register fora free hearing evaluation and ano-obligation trial of the Audéo Vhearing aids by calling1.888.408.7377.

Police have arrested a man in a human trafficking investi-gation involving a pregnant woman.

Police said a woman was recruited into the sex trade industry in October 2015, two years after she met the accused at age 23.

The accused allegedly took photos of her in various stages of undress and advertised her sexual services online.

The woman was taken to different hotels and forced to work as an escort and turned over all her earnings to the accused, police said.

She even had to work after becoming pregnant with the accused’s child, police alleged, adding the man threatened to put things into her food and drink to kill the baby.

Police alleged the woman wound up in the hospital after

the accused hit her with his car in January 2016, and the woman was able to escape from him two months later.

Johlawny Blake, 24, of Toronto, was charged June 27 with 12 offences includ-ing trafficking in persons, and assault with a weapon.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-7474 or Crime Stoppers anony-mously at 416-222-8477.

The TTC will hold public con-sultations for Wheel-Trans use starting this week.

Intended to update the public on changes to the accessible transit service as per provincial guidelines, the first consult happened Tuesday. Subsequent meet-ings will take place July 12 in Scarborough at the Civic Centre, July 14 at North York Memorial Community Hall, and July 21 at Father John Redmond Secondary School, 28 Col. Samuel Smith Park Dr. in Etobicoke. All meetings start at 6:30 p.m.

According to the TTC, the service registers 1,000 new riders a month and 11,000 door-to-door trips a day.

wOPP ISSUES 6,500 TICKETS On wEEKEnd

It was a busy Canada Day holi-day weekend for the OPP.

After the provincial police force vowed to crack down on speeders, impaired driv-ers and other law-breaking motorists, it issued 6,500 tick-ets province-wide over the long weekend. While the vast

majority of the tickets were for speeding, the OPP also laid 126 impaired driving charges and issued warnings to 55 drivers. Eighty-four vehicles were also impounded for street racing. No deaths were reported.

The OPP was also active on the water, laying impaired boating charges on 55 indi-viduals over the weekend.

wCYCLISTS, PEdESTRIAnS STRUCK ACROSS CITY

It was another fatal day on the streets of Toronto.

A 70-year-old man was killed on Monday, July 4 after being hit by the driver of a van in Rexdale. The incident was just one of 13 separate incidents that same day where pedestrians or cyclists were struck in all corners of the city. If that wasn’t enough, 10 separate incidents were reported over the Canada Day weekend, either involving

pedestrians or cyclists. Next week, Toronto Council

will debate recommendations for a new plan to improve road safety.

wSUBwAY SPEEd RESTRICTIOnS LIFTEd

The trains headed for Bloor-Yonge might be moving a little faster than usual.

The TTC announced it has lifted restricted speeds in place on the outdoor track section between Summerhill and Rosedale stations, which were instituted for safety con-cerns last month. The restric-tions resulted in trains moving at a snail’s pace to and from Bloor station and seem to be an ongoing occurrence due to the conditions of the outdoor track section on Line 1, which is more than 60 years old and has needed to undergo exten-sive rehabilitation work in the recent past just to extend its shelf-life.

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders is holding back on commenting on demands made by Black Lives Matter - Toronto during Sunday’s Pride Parade, which called for, among other things, banning police floats and marches from future parades.

Black Lives Matter, an

honoured guest at this year’s parade, stopped floats and marchers at Yonge and College streets until Pride officials agreed to their demands, which included excluding police floats from future marches. Police also wouldn’t be allowed to have booths at future Pride cel-ebrations, if the demands are met.

Pride director Mathieu

Chantelois told a media outlet on Monday what he signed off on was simply a discussion, not cutting police presence.

Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack said the Pride Parade was overshadowed by Black Lives Matter “hijacking” the event.

“If (Chantelois) didn’t know what he was signing that’s a problem as well,” he told a

media outlet Monday. “We want an apology.

We work very hard with the community to foster a great relationship... we got thrown under the bus to move the parade along. (Black Lives Matter) is trying to drive a wedge between police and the community we represent.”

In a statement sent out Monday, the Police Association of Ontario (PAO)

said the province’s LGBTQ police officers and police services personnel are “dis-appointed and angry one group co-opted the Toronto’s Pride event as a venue to disrupt a celebration of how far equality rights for those LGBTQ+2 members serving in the various provincial police services.”

“As a strong police sup-porter of the LGBTQ+2 com-

munity and labour leader, I’m very proud of the numerous steps the association has made over the past couple of decades towards advocat-ing for more inclusion and a diversified workforce that truly reflects the communi-ties we serve,” PAO President Bruce Chapman said in a release.

Consumer Feature

Discover a healthier lifestyle and slimmer waistlinewith Medicine Shoppe and Ideal Protein

Too many weight loss programs out there areshort sighted. They involve purging to hit thetarget weight and neglect instruction on how toadjust our lifestyle to maintain that target weightonce it has been reached. TheIdeal Protein protocol, avail-able at the Medicine Shoppeat 5177 Yonge Street, is afar-sighted program. It pairshealthy weight loss with edu-cation tips on how to main-tain that weight and lead ahealthier overall lifestyle allwhile being under pharma-cist supervision while on the program..

The Ideal Protein protocol was originally de-veloped more than 20 years ago by Dr. Tran TienChan, a specialist in nutrition and obesity relatedissues. It is a coached weight loss protocol thatdepletes fat reserves but retains muscle massthrough specific dieting and educates clients onhealthy living after the target weight is reached.

Mechanics of ideal Protein:

how does it work?Ideal Protein is divided up into four phases:

two weight loss phases, a transition phase anda maintenance phase. During the weight lossphases, a carb-cutting diet is introduced, one ofvegetables, protein and Ideal Protein products, which include shakes, protein bars, pancakesand soups. This diet reduces carbohydrate intake(while still keeping some delicious, healthyindulgences like pancakes). The body relies oncarbohydrates, protein and fat reserves for its

energy, so by reducing the carbohydrate intake, the body is encouraged to use the fat reserves forenergy instead. Because the body is also beingloaded up with healthy protein, the body still

retains its muscle mass.“That’s the key here,

maintaining muscle mass,”said Jean Schuller, pharmacyassistant and co-ownerof the Medicine Shoppein Willowdale. “If you losemuscle, it can impair yourability to lose weight after.”The more muscle mass, the

more calories are burnt in exercise and daily life. The Ideal Protein diet looks to keep muscle masswhile cutting carbohydrates, which encouragesthe use of fat reserves.

how ideal Protein stands out

The transition and maintenance phases ofIdeal Protein are what make it stand out from thecrowd of other weight loss programs. Ideal Proteinguides clients from weight loss into a healthierlifestyle through coaching. The client and coachesmeet each week, discussing the lifestyle changes, consulting the health profile created in the intro-ductory session, and updating weight and mea-surements, so progress is constantly monitored.

The weekly coaching sessions are the platformto foster a healthy overall lifestyle. The trainedcoaches have the client profile at their fingertipsand can offer suggestions on how to approach the“real food”part. They offer tasty recipes that followthe diet and can help them select products based

on their health profile. These lessons, tips and reci-pes are taken home and incorporated into the lifeof the client.

“After the fourth phase, theywill be educated inwhat they should be eating,”said Schuller.“It won’tbe a continuous diet anymore. That’ll just be theirlifestyle.”

Benefits of ideal Protein

The far-sighted reach of this program is not theonly reason it was awarded the number one mostpopular diet in 2015 by DietsinReview.com. It isan all-encompassing health program, not simplymeant for weight loss. The low-carb diet helps thebody regulate blood sugar. Excess carbohydratescan cause a spike in blood sugar, causing the all-too-familiar cravings for sweets. This diet helpsmitigate overeating, as the body is getting the nu-trients it needs in the proper doses.

“We’re passionate about your total health,”said Schuller. As we all know, obesity may havenegative effects such as elevated blood pressure,

strokes, type 2 diabetes, lowered self-esteem. “Ifwe can lose the weight we can hope to decreasethese negative repercussions as well.”

who is Best suited for ideal ProteinThis program is for just about anyone, no mat-

ter howmuchweight youwant to lose. “The goals, and therefore length of the program, will varyfrom person to person. Some want to lose thoselast 10 pounds, some want to lose 60,” said Schul-ler. “You set your goal, and we help you reach it.”

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding, those with liver or kidney disease are not recom-mended for this program. Those with diabetes orcardiovascular diseases will need to consult theirdoctor, as weight loss can mean a reduction ofprescribed medication.

To learn more about the Ideal Protein protocolvisit the Medicine Shoppe at 5177Yonge St. Bringin this article and receive a free introductory con-sultation with one of the Medicine Shoppe IdealProtein coaches ($150 value).

The Ideal Protein protocol goes beyond a diet. The four-phase program teaches clients how tobecome healthier in every aspect of their lives.

After the fourthphAse, itwon’t beA continuous diet

DAVID NICKLE [email protected]

Black Lives Matter – Toronto will be watching over the next year to see if Pride Toronto implements the nine demands to which organizers appeared to agree on Sunday afternoon — including a total ban of police presence at the annual Pride Parade.

“Now it’ll just be a matter of seeing how those demands are followed up,” said Black Lives Matter – Toronto spokesperson Leroi Newbold in an interview Monday.

One of the more contro-versial demands is one that asks police not be present at the parade. Newbold clari-fied that Black Lives Matter not only wanted police to not participate in the parade, but also not to police it, leaving security to Pride organiz-ers.

“We are asking Pride to take a look at what it means for black communities to have a police presence at Pride,” said Newbold.

“For example there are many black LGBT youth who’ve had interactions with police. I think it’s important for some people to under-stand that even the presence of police at an event like this creates an unsafe environ-ment.”

Newbold dismissed the suggestion that Pride Toronto would be legally required to pay for off-duty police offi-cers in order to simply obtain the necessary permits to hold the parade.

“There are many within Pride that have their own security and don’t utilize police,” Newbold said. “Year after year we’ve kept the events safe by using our own methods of security.”

Early indications are that that and the other eight demands won’t necessar-ily be implemented by the Pride Committee. In an inter-view with The Toronto Star, Pride Toronto’s Executive Director Mathieu Chantelois said that although he signed an agreement to cede to the demands, the next course of action will be decided by Pride’s membership and the community.

“What’s important for people to know is that I’m not deciding what’s in the parade, Alica (Hall, co-chair of Pride’s board of directors) doesn’t decide what’s in the parade, Black Lives Matter doesn’t… decide what’s in the parade,” he said. “Who’s deciding what’s in the parade is the membership, and my community… We will let them have the final word. What I did (Sunday) was made the parade move.”

The Pride Parade was brought to a standstill when members of Black Lives Matter – Toronto (which had been invited as an honoured guest) stopped in their tracks at Yonge and College streets, backing up other parade floats behind it, and demanded immedi-ate action on a set of nine demands.

Chantelois met with them at the parade and signed the nine demands. Newbold said the group is taking the com-mitment seriously, but noted that the issues that the black queer community has had

with Pride are longstand-ing.

“We did get a sign off so we’ll continue,” Newbold said. “This isn’t the begin-ning of the black commu-nity’s resistance, we’ve been having these conversations for years. They may not have been getting the media atten-tion but we’ve been having them for years.”

Local Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam was conciliatory July 4 following the meeting and defended Black Lives Matter – Toronto’s decision to protest in the context of the larger tradition of protest that is at the heart of Pride.

“That’s a very appropriate place for political dissent and political messaging,” said Wong-Tam.

“Nobody should take that away from Black Lives Matter. Pride is not just about beer gardens and $10 corn on the cob. It’s much more. Our community is only ever stronger when we come together. It is important to continue the conversation. There are racialized and vul-nerable people in our com-munity that don’t always feel welcome.”

With that said, Wong-Tam said she doesn’t agree with asking police to stay away from the parade.

“If the police aren’t there they get criticized for not being there, and now that the police are there, singing and dancing in the street, they’re criticized for participating,” said Wong-Tam.

Black Lives Matter expects demands to be implemented

Dan Pearce/METROLAND

A Toronto police officer works the Pride parade on Sunday as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes his way through the crowd. If Black Lives Matter – Toronto gets its way, it will be the last time Toronto police attend or participate in the parade.

Check us out online at www.insidetoronto.com

This isn’t the beginning of the black

community’s resistance, we’ve been having

these conversations for years.

Duke Heights BIA second largest in North Americalast May. “I find out about new stuff all the time.”

Before it was rebranded as ‘the heights of opportunity’, Duke Heights was best known as an industrial no-man’s land east of York University, dark, depressed and “sort of the armpit of Toronto where nobody really cared, but just drove through as fast as possible,” recalled Dr. Lew Pliamm, the BIA’s chair.

Now the area is becoming a transport hub, and the BIA believes transit investment – the nearly-completed Spadina Subway line extension to Vaughan to be followed by the promised Finch West Light Rail Transit line – will be a huge economic boost.

Some of the BIA’s most vis-ible ambassadors since its launch last year are summer students surveying busi-nesses.

But the nightly Intelligarde security patrols, with cars co-branded and displaying the BIA logo, also meet people who haven’t heard of the

BIA.Some are told to leave. The

patrols look for racers, dump-ers, drunk drivers, people loi-tering on private property, and any activity “that appears out

of place,” Michael Gavendo, Intelligarde’s vice-president of business development, said in a recent interview.

It’s often vehicles idling or moving slowly in the

early morning hours which “become the next day’s news headlines,” he said.

Intelligarde agents, “very cognizant of the re-branding efforts”, also tear down ille-gal signs, and send reports to police and city bylaw enforc-ers.

F i v e y e a r s a g o o n Bakersfield Street, someone abandoned a tractor trailer. It took a month to get rid of it, sparking conversations about a BIA, said de Dovitiis, who worked at the time for a local councillor.

Now Duke Heights BIA – headquartered in an office building at 1120 Finch Ave.

near a fuel tank farm which fills 700 tanker trucks a day – is the second-largest BIA in North America, he said, with well more than a quarter of the businesses signed up for security services, which can ticket cars on private land or walk employees to a bus stop at night.

When an alarm goes off, police can take two hours to respond, but “these guys can be there in five minutes,” de Dovitiis said.

Duke Heights is not the typical retail-based BIA you can see on College Street or St. Clair Avenue.

Board members had strug-

gled for months over how big it should be.

Thirty thousand people work in it, but apart from four condominium buildings by Dufferin and Sheppard, it’s all employment land.

The area is enormous, its industrial character both a challenge and a blessing, said Pliamm, but there’s a growing feeling local businesses are “in the same boat.”

From a handful, more than 600 businesses are now registered, and the number continues to grow.

The Champagne Centre on Finch, an indoor medical mall where Pliamm, a physi-cian, has a clinic, was once a bottling factory.

Other underused buildings can also be remade, he said, and Duke Heights still has big spaces where new businesses can go, within the city and close to transit.

That transit is also spread-ing excitement.

The Keele-Finch intersec-tion, once its subway stop opens and the LRT is built to the west, will have more pedestrian traffic than down-town’s Spadina Station, de Dovitiis said.

And that should mean not just general prosperity for the area, but a makeover for Finch, which he said is currently an “ugly”, often-congested street not friendly to cyclists or pedestrians.

“Now, you can do the city building that should have been done decades ago.”

Left, Laura Gonzalez, Karen Pereira and Diana Dumiprascu are surveyors for the new Duke Heights BIA (Dan Pearce/Metroland); above, the BIA is bounded by Dufferin and Keele to the west and east, respectively, and Steeles and Sheppard to the north and south.

Toronto’s outdoor pools now open for the summerThe City of Toronto officially opened its outdoor pools, splash pads and wading pools for the summer during a ceremony at the Donald B. Summerville Olympic Pools late last month.

On hand for the ceremony were York Center Councillor James Pasternak, chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee, Beaches-East York Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon

and Barbara Byers, director of public education for the Lifesaving Society.

“Torontonians of all ages and from all neighbourhoods will find ways to cool off in city parks this summer,” said Pasternak in a press release. “In addition to the outdoor pools opening today, families can get outside and take advantage of the many splash pads and wading pools in parks across the city.”

Supervision or swimming abil-ity requirements are in place for children under 10 years at the pools, and leisure swimming is free for all ages.

“Swimming is a great way to get active and be healthy,” McMahon said. “Our pools are a favourite destination for families in the sum-mertime, and I encourage residents to come out and cool down.”

The city’s outdoor pools will

remain open, weather permitting, with varying schedules, until Labour Day weekend.

More than 90 splash pads are open across the city and will remain open until Sept. 18. Splash pads operate daily from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and are activated through push-button features. Caregivers are reminded to supervise their children at these unsupervised water play areas.

Also, more than 100 supervised

wading pools are also open for the summer. Each will operate on individual schedules until Sept. 4, weather permitting. Wading pools are shallow water areas for chil-dren located in parks. Caregivers are reminded to supervise children at all times in these areas.

For information about the locations of city pools, and hours of operation, visit www.toronto.ca/swim or call

‘Willowdale’s neighbourhood festival’ offers music, buskers, dance, foodthere. We have grown to 5,000 to 6,000 (attendees) a week pretty much through word of mouth. People seem to know it’s happening.”

New this year, Tango Soul will present Milonga Cultura, an impromptu social gather-ing where visitors are invited to meet, interact and dance the tango.

Juno Award winners Digging Roots will kick-off Cultura with songs from their new album In the Light, while Fire Guy will heat things up with fire eating, breathing and juggling.

Other performers spread out over the weeks include Kobo Town; Estonian group Trad Attack!; beatboxer Scott Jackson; and balkan-klezmer-gypsy-party-punk-band Lemon Bucket Orkestra.

Family-friendly screenings of The Little Prince, Shaun the Sheep and Brooklyn are scheduled for viewing, and Cultura Food Village will serve up dishes from Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Central America, India and the Caribbean.

Presented by Filion in part-nership with North York Arts and Toronto Arts Foundation, Cultura also benefits selected charities through proceeds from busker performances. This year’s recipients include North York Harvest Food Bank, Sanfilippo Children’s Research Facility and North Yorkers for the Disabled, with about $1,000 raised weekly.

Cultura has also been short-ened from seven to four weeks to provide more money for musical acts, with funding coming from local sponsors, Filion said.

“It really is Willowdale’s neighbourhood festival,” he said. “When we have the Korean Harvest Festival, it’s mostly the Korean community that comes out. Cultura is the only really large festival offer-ing a broad cross-section of Willowdale.”

Lila Karim, managing direc-tor of North York Arts, praised the festival for bringing com-munity together outside of the downtown core.

“We’re thrilled, once again,

>>>from page 1

to be a part of such an impor-tant cultural festival in the city,” she said in a release.

20 pets

Paul and Simon, Lady Georgia are looking for belly rubs, pats

Welcome to July’s adopt-able furry friends.

You’ll meet the feline brother team of Paul and Simon as well as a lovely large mastiff mix named Lady Georgia. Read on to learn more about these homeless pets looking for new lives and families.

PauL and Simon

Brothers Paul and Simon are two-year-old kitties who came in a strays. They were found together and want to be adopted together. The boys, described as playful and affectionate, have been waiting for more than a month for a new family.

They are clean cats that can often be seen grooming each other throughout the day, staff note.

A few of their favourite things are spending time with the shelter’s daily visi-tors, belly rubs, meal time, investigating new toys, sleeping on extra comfy beds and catnip!

Both cats have been neutered and fully vetted. Their ID numbers are A744444 and A744445.

Lady GeorGia

When eight-year-old Lady Georgia first arrived at the shelter she was frightened and uncertain of all the new people and dogs around her. With lots of patience from staff, she began to unwind and trust again, but she can still be cautious and reserved, taking a little time to warm up to new people. Sweet Georgia, a mastiff mix, is looking for a quiet adult-only home with an adopter who will continue to help her feel safe and loved. A house with a fenced in backyard would be best. She can tolerate dogs from a distance, but does not like them in her personal space so she really needs to be the only creature in the home. She responds to sit, stay, down and gives a

paw for treats. She shows all the signs of being house-trained and is always clean in her kennel and waits to go outside. With people she knows she enjoys belly rubs and pats. She’d be delighted to get to know anyone who’d be interested in sharing their life with her. She’s been spayed and fully vetted. Her ID number is A740868.

Paul, Simon and Lady Georgia are waiting for you at Toronto Animal Services East Branch at 821 Progress Ave. To see them on the web, visit www.toronto.ca/animalservices or call the shelter at 416-338-7539.

Fresh white and green paint coat the walls, bookshelves are stocked with games and books, and a couched area with a large television makes for a cozy living room set-ting.

After two years of construc-tion, the newly renovated $300,000 Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club reopened on June 30, just in time for the 30 registered children to attend summer camp.

The open, airy space on Grandravine Drive, east of Jane Street, boasts 10 com-puters and a kitchen, so the club’s popular lunch program can continue running out of the space during the school year. A painting of Anthony Bennett, who attended the Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club as a youngster and was the first overall NBA draft pick in 2013, gleams from the wall.

The club, aimed at children aged six to 12, will be open in the summer during the week from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for camp, and after school and lunchtime during the school year. Programming, which serves more than 50 children weekly, will focus on arts,

sports, health, nutrition, and homework assistance.

Opening in 1994, the Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club used to run out of a Toronto Community Housing building that previously operated as a convenience store.

The club merged with St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club in 1999, and became its first satellite location, leas-ing the space from Toronto Community Housing. But the small, dark space “would freeze in the winter, melt in the summer, and flood in the spring,” said Chris Foster, executive director of St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club.

For the past two years, after-school programs ran out of nearby Oakdale Park Middle School, but those will be returned to the new space,

Foster said. Child mentor Lashawna

McCormack said it’s impor-tant for young people to have positive role models during formative years.

“I want to instill unity in them,” she said. “Develop social skills and develop your-self. We want kids to know this is a good place to be.”

Gurinder Saini and her two children, Saleena, 10, and Mallica, 8, stopped by the Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club last Thursday to check out the new space.

“I think it’s nice,” she said, adding her daughters will attend the summer camp offered by the club. “It’s a pretty good program. I trust my kids here.”

Saleena, who was busy colouring, said she liked the new club - especially the air conditioning.

“I think it’s going to be fun,” she said of camp.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation contributed $150,000 towards renovation costs, with the rest provided by Toronto Community Housing, St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club and goeasy, which bills itself as a leading full ser-vice provider of goods and alternative financial services for everyday Canadians.

DAVID NICKLE [email protected]

Toronto’s Board of Health has unani-mously recommended approving three safe injection sites in com-munities around Toronto follow-ing deputations that showed near unanimity among neighbours, advocates and addicts.

If approved by Toronto Council when it meets July 12, sites in which IV drug users can inject under medi-cal supervision will be slated for three sites:

• the Queen West Central Community Health Centre at Queen St. West and Bathurst Street;

• the South Riverdale Community Health Centre in Leslieville at Queen St. East and Carlaw Avenue;

• and at a city-run facility at Yonge and Dundas streets.

The plan to create the sites has been in the works since 2013, and its completion would be one of out-going Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown’s final accomplish-ments before leaving.

Following the board vote on

Monday, McKeown said that evi-dence is clear that supervised injec-tion sites save lives.

“One of the key ways supervised injections help in preventing over-dose deaths is providing support,” he said. “Supervised injection sites around the world never have deaths. If no one is there to intervene then the overdose may take its course and the outcome may be fatal. However, if someone is there to intervene who’s trained we may be able to prevent that death.”

McKeown and others noted the lack of opposition to all three sites – unusual, given the controversy surrounding similar municipal initiatives, such as the opening of shelters in neighbourhoods.

“There’s been a significant change in the past two or three years,” said Dr. McKeown. “When we first reported on this in 2013 there was a lot of opposition. But there’s been a lot of learning about how supervised injection might work and help since then.”

Six months after shutting down, Goodwill is coming back to Toronto.

Michelle Quintyn, president and CEO of Goodwill Ontario Great Lakes, said the plan is to open the first stores in 2017, although the exact number and locations are yet to be determined.

“We are expanding our existing infrastructure,” she said in a phone interview Wednesday, June 29.

“It will take some time for us to come back. This involves rigorous planning, demographics planning, finding real estate and building the organization from a fresh start.”

Goodwill Industries of Toronto, Eastern, Central, and Northern Ontario (TECNO) closed its doors in January, costing more than 400 employees their jobs.

While acknowledging it might take some time, Quintyn said she’s hope-ful to restore the jobs lost in Toronto, and to bring in more.

“It could take five years to bring back 400 jobs,” she said, adding each regional Goodwill is independently

operated. “When we open a store, we typically create 35 to 40 jobs.”

Goodwill TECNO filed for bank-ruptcy in February, citing $6 million in debt, $4.2 million of which was owed to former employees for vaca-tion and severance pay.

Former Goodwill TECNO CEO Keiko Nakamura said at the time a bankruptcy filing was made in the hopes of restructuring and reopening the stores, but later said the defunct company was too deep in debt to claw its way out. Goodwill TECNO’s 16 stores, 10 donation centres and two offices in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Newmarket, Barrie, Orillia and Brockville closed Jan. 16. The shutdown came without warning to employees, whose collective agree-ment required at least 30 days notice of closures.
