Inpharma 1225 - 19 Feb 2000 The novel terpenoid antibacterial brasilicardin A shows antitumour activity in a murine model of leukaemia, report researchers from Japan. Three hours after receiving intraperitoneal (IP) tumour implants of P388 or P388/ADR leukaemia cells, CDF1 mice received IP brasilicardin A 1, 5 or 10 mg/kg/day, doxorubicin [adriamycin] 1 or 5 mg/kg/day, or no treatment (controls), for 10 days. At all doses, brasilicardin A significantly prolonged mean survival time in mice bearing P388 or P388/ADR tumours, compared with controls. Similarly, doxorubicin 1 mg/kg/day significantly prolonged mean survival time in mice bearing P388 tumours, compared with controls, but doxorubicin had no detectable antitumour effect in mice bearing P388/ADR tumours. No loss in bodyweight was observed in brasilicardin A 10 mg/kg/day recipients. Komaki H, et al. Antitumor activity of brasilicardin A, a novel terpenoid antibiotic from Nocardia brasiliensis.
