The novel terpenoid antibacterial brasilicardin Ashows antitumour activity in a murine model ofleukaemia, report researchers from Japan. Three hoursafter receiving intraperitoneal (IP) tumour implants ofP388 or P388/ADR leukaemia cells, CDF1 micereceived IP brasilicardin A 1, 5 or 10 mg/kg/day,doxorubicin [adriamycin] 1 or 5 mg/kg/day, or notreatment (controls), for 10 days. At all doses, brasilicardin A significantly prolonged mean survivaltime in mice bearing P388 or P388/ADR tumours, compared with controls. Similarly, doxorubicin 1mg/kg/day significantly prolonged mean survival timein mice bearing P388 tumours, compared withcontrols, but doxorubicin had no detectableantitumour effect in mice bearing P388/ADR tumours. No loss in bodyweight was observed in brasilicardin A10 mg/kg/day recipients.Komaki H, et al.
