Wisconsin Veterans Home at King

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress. At this time, Memorial Day was also placed on the last Monday in May, the same as other federal holidays. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have died in all American wars. Initially called Decoration Day, Memorial Day started after the American Civil War to honor both Union and confederate soldiers who died while serving in the armed forces. By the end of World War I, the holiday expanded to honor all soldiers who died while serving in the United States’ armed forces. For almost as long as there has been the holiday, there has been a rivalry about who celebrated Memorial Day first. Only one town, however, has received the official approval from the United States Government. President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation passed by the United States Congress naming Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

As we prepare for Memorial Day this year, let us remember some of the formal rituals and traditions associated with this day of honor:

• On Memorial Day, American flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised to the top of the staff until sunset, in honor of our nation’s battle heroes.• Cemetery services. WVH-K will host its annual Memorial Day Cemetery Service on Monday, May 29, 2017, at 10:30 AM.• Parades are held across the country.• Flowers and/or flags are placed at graves.• Some people wear poppies in honor of America’s war dead. • Americans are encouraged to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM local time.

However you and yours honor this day, keep in mind the foundational purpose of Memorial Day; to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Remember as well those loved ones left behind, who sacrificed for our freedoms too. American freedoms are unmatched in this world. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who gave bravely for us and secured our freedoms. May you take the time to pause, remember, and give thanks and praise for our military heroes, those past, present and future.

There are so many things going on.Look at your lawn.

Do you notice the grass growing?How about the bugs scurrying about?

These are simple things that do affect you but you normally don’t think about it.

How about your mate?Do you concentrate on what they do?Even the little things that bother you.

These things can drive you nuts.But do you have the guts?To overlook these things.

Are they worth a big fight.So you end up alone at night.

No, I don’t think so.We all have things that are said or done that

bother others.But we are not their mothers.

Are they really worth the time it takes?To dwell on some mistake.

We noticed some good when we met them.Is it not there now?

We spend too much time concentrating on the wrong.

It does not make you strong.Appreciate all that is done for you.

The “Mother” of All Bombs

On April 13, 2017 the news flashed on TV, radio, internet and lit up the Smart Phone world. The Mother of all bombs was employed to deal with a group of people that threatened the safety of the United States and possibly the world.

CNN news reported the following:

A GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), nicknamed the “mother of all bombs,” was dropped at 7:32 p.m. local time, according to four US military officials with direct knowledge of the mission. A MOAB is a 30-foot-long, 21,600-pound, GPS-guided munition. President Donald Trump called it “another successful job” later Thursday.

Before His ascension 50 days after his resurrection Jesus shared with his followers that He too desired to drop a “bomb” of incredible power to disrupt the power of the enemy and advance His kingdom. Jesus put it this way:

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:49)

and He spoke these words as well:

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

The results of this explosion? It was a success! The day of Pentecost goes down in history as an explosive event that changed the world. It unleashed such power on the

waiting throng that in one day by the power of the Holy Spirit three thousand souls were added to the company of the disciples. By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit Jesus Christ blessed His church with power. And, it was by this same power that the followers of Christ “turned the world upside down!” Acts 17:6.

God’s Kindgom advanced greatly back then and today our Lord desires the same. Today, my friend, the Christian church needs the same power. The power that advanced God’s kingdom over 2000 years ago is needed today. So, how can we receive this power? Just like the disciples did.

First, we must pray for the Spirit to help us remove the obstacles that prevent us from receiving Him in all His fullness and power. When we read Acts 2:1 we discover that “when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” This happened because as Acts 1:14 tells us, these all continued with “one accord in prayer and supplication.” These disciples came together and allowed God to help them remove anything that would prevent them from receiving the promised blessing. We too must come to God asking him to reveal to us what is keeping us from receiving the Spirt, and once He does, ask Him for the power to remove the obstacle. Once this happens the Spirt will come into our lives.

Then, once this happens we must be willing to be used by the Spirit as He pleases. Yes, self must be removed for God to truly, authentically and with power use us. On the day of Pentecost that is what happened. Each

Arthur’s assistance is greatly appreciated at our Catholic services, especially in Stordock Hall at 8:00 AM communion services. The compassion Arthur shows to the people he serves is an inspiration for all of us at the Veterans Home at King. He is recognized for how he treats everyone with kindness and respect, no matter what the situation may be. No matter the weather, Arthur is here to help nearly every Sunday. Members have stated, “Oh my goodness, this guy is great; he always gives without counting the cost.”

“May the Almighty God shower you with blessings from above for the wonderful work you are doing. What you provide through your words and actions goes a long way toward helping our Veterans to keep their dignity. I just want you to know that your work hasn’t gone unnoticed. I have seen you a number of times at St. Mary Magdalene helping out (Knights of Columbus) during Saturday mass services. disciple was ready and willing to be used of God for His glory so that when the Spirit was powered out each was able to speak and act for God in a mighty way. (see Acts chapter 2).

I believe God desires to see Pentecost take place once again. Yes, the true “mother of all bombs” awaits to be unleashed on the Christian. May pray for the Spirit to

aid us in identifying and then removing anything that may be getting in the way of this experience. And then, once He does, may we remain in a humble posture to engage in life as He desires and or His glory! Then, may our commander and chief from heaven be able to say “another successful job” well done my good and faithful servant! (Matthew 25:21).

The “Mother” of All Bombs continued from 11

Stordock Hall would like to introduce Sophie! The TEAM here at Stordock knew Depression and Anxiety could be decreased through something so simple as time with a pet. Sophie works day shift Monday through Friday.

Members who care for Sophie shared the following:

“Since I have been with Sophie, it feels more like home….it’s like I have my pet again”.“I just enjoy watching her play. She makes me happy.”“I had to give up my pug to come here. It is just so nice to have something to love again.”“I cried when I held her because she needed me as much as I needed her.”“Every floor should have a Sophie.”

As a staff person working with some of the members Sophie spends time with, I have noticed an increase in socialization and improved mood . Members who have routinely isolated in their rooms are coming out to either play with Sophie or take her outside. They are initiating contact with others to talk about Sophie.

Another unexpected benefit to having Sophie in Stordock Hall is that she has added to uplifting staff morale. Sophie is just as happy to greet staff as she is the Members. Staff get great enjoyment out of seeing the Members happy and spending time with Sophie.

Just 15 minutes bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop. Over the long term, pet and human interactions can lower cholesterol levels, fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke. This is why pets for the elderly can be so beneficial.

For seniors, the benefits of a furry companion can be life-changing. Walking a dog is great cardiovascular exercise, but just the simple act of caring for a pet-petting, brushing, feeding-provides both mild activity and a means to stay engaged with the world. Pets can make the elderly feel needed, and that feeling can translate into a greater sense of purpose and self-worth. During what can be a lonely time of life, the unconditional love of a cherished dog or cat can be a bridge to more socialization with others, lowered stress, mental stimulation and a renewed interest in life.

Pet therapy for the elderly has also proven to be a powerful tool for what’s known as “Sundowners Syndrome” evening periods of increased agitation and confusion in those with Alzheimer’s. Animals’ non-verbal communication and profound acceptance can be soothing for those with difficulty using language; some may even connect with memories of their own treasured pets.

Dogs in particular can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health.

Scents and Sensibility by Spencer Quinn This is the eighth book in the beloved mystery series with private investigator Bernie Little and his canine companion Chet. This time, they return from a long road trip to discover Bernie’s wall safe is missing. And their next door neighbor is under investigation for being in possession of a saguaro cactus illegally transplanted from the desert! Chet and Bernie end up deep in the desert as they investigate. They discover that an innocent-seeming desert music festival may hide some sinister goings-on. Then clues lead them back to a long-ago kidnapping where the ransom money disappeared.

The Last Precinct by Patricia Cornwell Virginia’s Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta finds herself under criminal investigation. When a formidable prosecutor is brought into the case, “Scarpetta must struggle to make what she knows to be the truth prevail against mounting and unnerving evidence to the contrary.” Her desperation takes her to “The Last Precinct.”

World Order by Henry Kissinger Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger offers a detailed look into what he considers the ultimate challenge for the twenty-first century: how to build a shared international order in a world of divergent historical perspectives, violent conflict, proliferating technology, and ideological extremism. Throughout history, civilizations defined their own concepts of “world order.” We had China that early on decided its Emperor was the world’s pinnacle; the Roman Empire imagined itself as surrounded by barbarians; then European peoples came up with the idea of sovereign states and sought to export it across the world; early Islam considered itself the world’s only legitimate political unit; the United States was born of a conviction about the universal applicability of democracy. “Now international affairs take place on a global basis, and these historical concepts of world order are meeting. Every region participates in questions of high policy in every other, often instantaneously.
