Welcome to another great year in the arts at north Central College. We want to
start by thanking everyone who helped make this a successful program. With 14 performances completely sold out last season, we hope to build on the success. thank you for supporting the arts in naperville at north Central College. if you’ve not yet experienced a performance at the greatest arts facilities in the area, you’re in for a treat! We recently presented american rock band, Switchfoot. one of the band members, Chad Butler, summed up the experience all visiting artists have here. “We had a great experience here at north Central College. the venue, the crew, the hospitality ... it was all wonderful ... But, the best part of today was definitely the people here. We really enjoyed ourselves. thank you for having us.” i look forward to another great season!
after Celtic Woman Christmas, one patron told me i needed to retire. He could not see how we could possibly top what we had done with that concert. instead of retiring, i decided to bring Celtic Woman “a Christmas Celebration–the Symphony tour” back for a second season. and since that show sold out so quickly, we have added a second performance this year. if you were among the lucky ones who saw that magnificent performance, here is your chance to come back—and bring your friends.
We are always looking to bring you the best variety of artists, so we offer something for everyone. if you are a fan of a more contemporary sound, then

orchestra, Vienna Boys Choir, Wynton marsalis, Celtic Woman and many more have performed in
our venues. But the cost of performance tickets only covers half our expenses to bring these great
artists to the College’s stages. the generous support from the friends of the arts ensures the
College can continue to bring world-class performers to our world-class venues.

His certified Gold tune “rock & roll” turned into an international hit, and the exuberant folk-pop bounce of his latest single, “Watching You Watch Him,” debuted on the season premiere of “Grey’s anatomy.”

British composers are showcased in the duPage Symphony orchestra’s second concert in the “Great expectations” series, bringing great music, exciting performances and extraordinary soloists to the stage. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, private concerts and functions and on state occasions. today, about 100 choristers between ages 10 and 14 are divided into four touring choirs that give some 300 concerts and performances each year before nearly half a million people. the choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary music. together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra and the Vienna State opera Chorus, the Vienna Boys Choir maintains the tradition of the imperial musicians providing music for the Sunday mass in Vienna’s imperial Chapel, as the choir has done since 1498.

“How big Can you Get? 100 years of Cab Calloway featuring big bad voodoo Daddy” Saturday, May 18, 8 p.m., Pfeiffer hall, Price levels* $50, $40, $35
Longtime fans of america’s favorite little big band will immediately recognize the 2009 album, “How Big Can You Get? a tribute to Cab Calloway,” as a milestone in Big Bad Voodoo daddy’s multi-platinum, 19-year career. While capturing the essence of an american icon in a rowdy celebration of musicianship, mischief, genius, street smarts and fun, it’s also possibly the timeliest and most welcome album of the year—bringing a much-needed high-voltage jolt of winning, feel-good energy to a country slogging through tough times. Since its arrival on the music scene in 1993, Big Bad Voodoo daddy’s irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach have proven to be the singular standout among the numerous bands that launched the swing revival throughout the ‘90s.

michelle Lindblom“The Journey Continues” august 17-September 30, 2012
“the imagery in my work serves as a metaphor for the various confrontations, dialogues, muses and revelations i have had on my journey so far. the viewers are drawn in by the color, movement and texture, but ultimately, i would hope they venture in further using their own sensual interpretations.”
Lee benson“immortality 10,000 Years” October 5-november 11, 2012
time and immortality. What is time? Why do we often revel in the fact that it gives us existence, but then we also rail against the fact that we are locked in it? Why does it seem to be so fleetingly existing while at the same time physically present always? is there “i” after i cease to exist in my current state?
C.K. Wildenovember 16, 2012-January 6, 2013
C.K. Wilde has formulated a wholly new and creative approach to collage, keeping his work firmly planted in collage’s roots as a disruptive medium bent on social scrutiny, while unlocking its superb narrative potential.
Wilde is a co-founder of the nonprofit Brooklyn artists alliance and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. His collages and book objects are in numerous private and public collections, including the Brooklyn museum, metropolitan museum of art, museum of modern art and Walker art Center.
Jan-Ru Wan“ReMaterialization/Relive Memory” January 11-March 24, 2013
the appearance and disappearance of dream, desire, hope, despair, memory and life are transient: one moment you realize they are all there, and the next you may just go on with your everyday life without even noticing them.
in this exhibit, Jan-ru Wan uses found materials such as petri dishes, red chili peppers, old clothes, etc., to create artwork and question the emotional construct of the human condition.
Pamela Hart“Through new Eyes” March 29-May 26, 2013
“there have been several times in my career where i had moments—epiphanies, if you will—that changed the way i saw my paintings. these epiphanies have changed the way i painted. this exhibit is my first showing of work following one such moment.”
When Pamela Hart saw her paintings for the first time after returning from an exhibit, she looked at them as old friends. But as she looked at them over time, she felt they looked tired and maybe a little lost and decided they needed more layers of space, depth and an infusion of color. “this show is all about my new vision.”
George Lorio“Border images” May 31-July 28, 2013
George Lorio has a frame of vision inspired by his new orleans background. it was and continues to be a place of extremes: beauty and decay, religion and ritual, custom and iconoclasm.
“from that experience, i acquired an excitement for visual matters, colors, forms and even artifacts. Before moving to the rio Grande Valley, my sculpture employed a constructed metaphor to nature with which i sought a transcendent reference to my experience. Having lived on the border with mexico for 10 years, my imagery has grown more topical. Presently, i use an image of irony with constructed and found forms as a means to convey my comments on the privilege of class, immigration and social hierarchy.”

Domingo Parada “Domingo Parada: new Work” September 16-november 7, 2012
Geometric abstract paintings and acrylic on paper.
Larry Holmes “hear no Evil” november 11, 2012-January 10, 2013
“the concerns in my work range from the formal to the fanciful with certain other issues between these two extremes. in the process of juggling this variety of ideas, my way of thinking about the images and pictorial devices that are employed has come to be largely about the psychology of what is depicted and the subsequent gaps that this leaves for the viewer to fill. Ultimately, the paintings are intended to leave the audience amused or bemused (sometimes both) and to provide those experiences through what seem to be familiar genres, but are less so than what initial impressions might indicate.”
Laura Lein-Svencner January 13-March 7, 2013
Beginning with paper—from found papers in recycling bins to handmade ones made from plants in her backyard—Laura Lein-Svencner sands, alters, abuses and manipulates. textures are formed by adding gesso, molding pastes and acrylics, with a hint of the hand-pulled stitching with thread and beads. Visual entities grow out of self-discovery, and new compositions stem from the need to take risks and explore. She is passionately fascinated by the many ideas that flow through each piece, stimulating the need to gather and research the many aspects of collage yet still not exposed.
