We would like to sincerely thank the Oakland community for their support the past 12 years. It has been a pleasure doing business with you. Sister Creek Creations is now closed.

February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full

moon.

FAREWELL

It’s always hard to say goodbye, but this is a particularly difficult farewell for those of us on the staff of The Oaklander.

For many years, Barbara Arlet served on the newsletter committee, and as everyone who knew Barb can attest, she never did things halfway. Each month she made oodles of copies and distributed them, ensuring that the by-mail subscribers and those who purchased the newsletter at the post office were kept abreast of all the goings-on in our community.

During her years in Oakland, Barbara took an active role in many church and community events, and our little town will not be the same without her. Oakland’s loss is truly Heaven’s gain.

MAY TRIVIA

On May 3, 1952, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher and Lieutenant Colonel William P. Benedict, flying US Air Force C-47, became the first to land a plane on the North Pole.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show opened in London, England on May 9, 1887.

On May 21, 1999, All My Children actress Susan Lucci finally received an Emmy award for her role as Erica Kane. She had been nominated previously a record 18 times with no win.

Samuel F.B. Morse sent the first public telegraph message - "What Hath God Wrought?" - through the Washington-to-Baltimore telegraph line on May 24, 1844. On May 30, 1806, future US President Andrew Jackson participated in a duel, killing Charles Dickinson. Dickinson shot first, wounding Jackson, but Jackson's shot at Dickinson was fatal. Most of Andrew Jackson's duels were for the questioned honor of his wife, Rachel.

Call Tim or Carrie Litzsinger at 636-233-2095. We are always glad to have you stop by, but you may want to give us a call first. You will find us at 8534 Oakland Road or visit us on the web at tcsyntheticoils.com or tcallnaturalfertilizer.com.

IMPORTANT INFO

FROM OPLFPD

If you are going to burn a brush pile – large or small - please call the 911 Center at the non-emergency number: (870) 425-2361. This way they have your name and address on file in case someone calls them about a fire.

This keeps the Fire Department from responding to calls that are not needed. If you need us, we will show up, but please remember to call 425-2361 for those non-emergency burns. We all are volunteers. Thank you for your support.

LIBRARY NEWS

Spring has sprung and summer is on the way. This is the time of year everyone wants to be outside, either at the lake or in the garden. Just remember at the end of the day it is relaxing time. Grab a book, prop your feet up and escape to another time or place.

The two new books in the library in May will be from J. A. Jance and a new author, Clare Mackintosh.

To all the mothers out there, whether you have children by blood or children by heart, may you all have a fantastic and special Mother's Day.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Silent Auction for the library in April. Whether you donated some of your work, or bid on articles, your participation is greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget! The penny collection jug is still set up at the library and at Outpost Liquor Store at the state line.

If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please call me at (870) 656-0615. Hope to see everyone at the library!

GAIL’S PETS FUNDRAISER

COMING TO AN END

The Gail's Pets Second Chance shoe collection fundraiser comes to an end on May 31st.

Gail needs fewer than 100 pairs of shoes to avoid the shipping charge and maximize the funds for the rescue.

Shoes may be left at Oakland Community Center, Promise Land Community Center, Baxter Animal Clinic and Long Chiropractic, or call Gail for pickup.

HILLTOP BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor Joel Holth and the congregation would like to invite all children and adults to Sunday School (10 a.m.) and Worship Service (11 a.m.) A nursery is provided during Worship Service.

Plans to enlarge our church building are underway! As part of our fundraising campaign, we sold cookbooks for $10.00 each. We have just a few copies left!

FOOD SHELF

The food shelf is up and running in the foyer of the Community Center. It is ready for people to drop off their extra non-perishables and is there for anyone who needs a little help with food.

RECYCLING YOUR ALUMINUM CANS

Many of our local residents turn in their aluminum cans to the Oakland/Promise Land Volunteer Fire Department for recycling, which is very much appreciated.

The recycling center is requesting using 13-gallon trash bags instead of Wal-Mart bags. The reason: The extra time it takes the recycling center to remove the cans from the Wal-Mart bags. Let's support this to help them out. Thank you.
