    Dear Parishioners,

I cant believe I am writing notes for November already where does time go?There is a great buzz in the parish with the Carry Centre project making goodprogress (full report on page 6); however, I am conscious that November heraldsa more reflective time in the Churchs year. As part of our liturgies I draw yourattention to the All Saints service on the 2ndNovember in which we have anopportunity to remember those parishioners and loved ones who have passedaway. As we remember them may we give thanks for their faith, love and

example. This edition of The Obelisk covers the month of December and all the activitiesassociated with Advent and Christmas. It is a special time of the year whenfamily and friends gather to celebrate and relax. For those travelling to Killineythis December - they are very welcome in Holy Trinity! A full outline ofChristmas services may be found on page 5Finally, to those for whom Christmas is not a particularly joyful time - I hope thatyou may find peace in that which only the Christ child gives to all of us.

A happy and blessed Christmas to you all,

    With every good wish,

    From the Rector

Hospital VisitingThe Rector would appreciate being told if parishioners are in hospital or

going into hospital, and will be pleased to offer pastoral support.A selection of prayers is available from him or in Church.

A term associated with gifted people whose horticultural skills are enhanced by a

feeling, an empathy, with things that are sown and grown - usually with enviablesuccess. I dont possess green fingers (nimble fingers might describe my key-boardskills, but this already alludes to a childrens toy-shop in a neighbouring parish). Thefloral flair of the lady with whom I have the privilege of sharing two gorgeousgardens is definitely green fingered. The results of her creativity are there for allto see, in fragrant splendour and usual beauty. There is surely no more relaxingpastime than sitting under a shady tree observing your nearest and dearestlovingly tending a flower bed while kneeling and patiently weeding. When the

discarded substances grow in volume to resemble a small haystack, it is time forthe non-green fingered member of the partnership to stir. The abandonedmaterial is stuffed into a wheel-barrow and transported to the shredding bay (i.e.a hidden corner of the garden) a machine gobbles it up, spews it out in little bits, plastic buckets of it are dispatched to one of many compost heaps dotted aboutthe estate. Tis here that moisture, heat and ever industrious worms combine, inthe fullness of time, to produce a crumbly brown nutrient. This will be fed andspread around the lucky perennials and the newly planed hopefuls giving nature a

leg-up, as it were, in the unending patterns of growth. When the work is doneand the busy world is hushed, what greater joy is there, than to sit side-by-sidein ones private Eden and savour the fragrances, the abundance and variety ofcolour, the intermittent music of the birds aloft in the branches, and perhaps sipthe fruits of the juniper tree. I hope you are green with envy!

HarvestMany thanks to our Choir, Music Director Frank Hughes, and the Flower Guild whodecorated our Church with artistic flair and all who enhanced our worship during thisautumn season. Our preachers were warmly received and we thank them for theirinspiring reflections! Pictured above is the Rector, churchwardens and the Revd SuzanneHarris - the preacher on the 12th October.

The Carry CentreWork is progressing well on the Carry Hall. The building committee meet weekly with the

Architect for site meetings and updates on the project. In early October we learned thatdue to unforeseen circumstances the project has been slightly delayed with the finishing timemoved to the end of November. It is planned that the first public event in the new centrewill be the Christmas Sale on the 6th November (please see details elsewhere). The goodnews is that the project remains within budget and the building committee are confident thateverybody will be very pleased with the end product. More news next month. In the meantime the parish users will use various locations for their gatheringspleaseconsult each organisation for full details. For more information visit www.carrycentre.ie

I have worked for the Rushe family for 14 years. I am currently the StoreManager of Super Valu in Dalkey. Having previously been the StoreManager of our Killiney branch for 7 years. I returned to Dalkey in lateAugust 2013, this is my second time being the Store Manager in Dalkey; Iwas in charge of the store in the early 2000s.I can honestly say that no two days are the same in my role, everydaythrows up a new challenge. I like to consider our store as part of thecommunity, we have strong ties to local schools and clubs, we assistthem in any way we can when they are trying to raise funds for various

projects. As I have stated, this is my second time working in Dalkey. It never ceases to amaze me

how strong the sense of community spirit is in Dalkey. The town always has somethinggoing on in it and it never seems to have a shortage of people willing to help out. This is acredit to the residents, the community seems to be very proud of their town, as theyshould be, its picturesque, friendly, tidy and ardent. It is a place I enjoy working in, I alwayshave. There are so many excellent businesses in the town, Why go anywhere else? I am justrecently married, so when I am not working I like to spend as much time with my wife aspossible. My working days are nonstop and hectic, most of my spare time is spent with her, there is no better way of decompressing. My other way of relaxing is done in the form of

running, I run between 20 and 30km a week. I find this both relaxes and energises me. Ifonly we could sort out the Irish weather, Id probably run more.

A Fishermans Tale - Peter Caviston

Paint the picture: Thursday night before the big Ireland and England game, a group of fineSeapoint Rugby gentlemen assembled in the Graduate Bar, Killiney. Served from behind thebar by the bold Vinnie OReilly was yours truly, a small lad known as Bottles OToole and

the other gentlemen will remain anonymous for obvious reasons? We started a round ofpints and one pint led to the next when one of the lads dared me that I would note dress upas Molly Malone and bring the wheelbarrow, that normally resided outside my shop inGlasthule, into the middle of Landsdowne Road just before the game commenced.Fast forward to Saturday. I produced Molly the wheelbarrow I dressed up in the shop

apron, wore Pat OHaras Irish jersey and said goodbye to our guests in the shop.Arriving at Landsdowne Road I relaised that I had a problem! Hiding a wheelbarrow isntexactly easy and there was a large Garda presence around the old stadium. Spotting an ex-Seapoint player who was a steward at the game I managed to bluff my way into the ground. You want to see his face when I asked him If I could roll the wheelbarrow on to the pitch atexactly 4 minutes before the start of the game since neither 3 minutes or five minutes werepart of the bet. He said that the President of Ireland was about to come onto the pitch, Isaid all the better and with the wink of an eye the wicket gate was opened and I was out of

the traps like a greyhound. While running to the centre of the pitch pushing thewheelbarrow as fast as I could I saw the President coming onto the pitch. There was a roarfrom the crowd and the President thought it was for her but I knew it was for me. I couldsee a policeman running after me in hot pursuit shouting at me to stop. Putting his hand onmy arm he said I am arresting you. I said hold on a minute I have to do a pirouette first. As I did the crowd went ballistic.Youd never know, maybe Molly might go to the Aviva without invite!!

Its the simple things in life for me. Going back home to our family farm in

Galway is where I find the most peace and happiness. I am very fortunate thatmy elderly parents are still alive and I cherish every moment spent with them.I love to go home, throw on the wellies and walk the farm. As John Burroughssaid, I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put inorder. Going home does that very thing to me! I slow down, take in the freshair, beautiful Galway countryside and am thankful to God for the family and life Ihave

BooksWhat a pleasure it is to take down a favourite book and to read it again, even

just to leaf through a page or two. The stories, the characters, the feelingscome flooding back, like when hearing a favourite piece of music again.Over the last year Ive been opening some boxes of books which had been putaway for a while, and putting them onto new bookshelves. Needless to say itsturned out to be a long task, slowed down by the rediscovery of many long lost

friends and favourites, leading to lengthy pauses in the unpacking, and to manyrediscovered delights. Books given by family and friends, books acquired atdifferent stages of life and in foreign parts, books put aside for later reading, books out of mind but joyfully remembered when unpacked from the boxes inwhich they had been so carefully put away! All keys to memories andreminders, to re-acquaintances with people, events, stories and emotions.
