Scientists think that octopuses change colors and patterns to show their moods.

Frightened octopuses turn pale, light colors. Angry octopuses are solid purple or black.

When octopuses eat they are often covered with spots and blotches.

People can be a threat to octopuses when they pollute the oceans. But, people and octopuses can also live on harmony with one another.

Chapter 2 Communication

If an enemy does spot an octopus, the octopus could change colors. Octopuses communicate by changing color and changing patterns.

A whole wave of di!erent colors may flow across its skin when sending messages.

The octopus can turn red, green, or even black. The octopus' skin also can change patterns, showing, stripes, solids, or dots.
