Thesis

I decided to make tie-ins with religion (now and then) and the likeness of the rich and the

poor to our current situation[s].

They blamed their problems on their gods-- so do we.

The rich wanted to stay rich-- No change nowadays except the illusion

that it’s not so.

Setting

Setting was roughly 500 BC, of ancient times (around Greece, as there was plenty of ship movement and travels)

Odysseus, the main character, calls home his island Ithica.

The Trojan War was just fought.

PlotOdysseus goes through many problems in his travels to

attempt to set foot in his homeland, Ithica. These problems include: the Sirens, Calypso and her island, Scylla and

Charybdis, the Cyclopes, the Lotus-Eaters, a visit to the Underworld, and Laestrygonians.

Poseidon literally makes Odysseus go through Hell.

Topic Sentence #2

The rich stay rich while the poor stay poor. The poor ought pay for the rich’s expenses, if

they’re too costly, to their beliefs.

" 'I now suggest that we each give him a large tripod and a cauldron. Later we will recoup ourselves by a tax on the people, since it

would be hard on us singly to have to make so generous a donation.' " (Homer, 500 BC,

Page 203)

" 'May it please your majesty, we have some strangers here at the gates - a couple of

men whom I take by their looks to be of

royal blood.' " (Homer, 500 BC, Page 64)

Conclusion

Odysseus wouldn’t have survived without the gods help..

Still he blames them for his troubles.

The rich party and banquet while the poor do their work to keep the rich rich.

While old, The Odyssey is an awesome story, and the mythology shows how real they thought it was.
