for casual family gatherings. In the living area, a white double-drum shade lighting fixture by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is suspended above two Nest Casa wood tables, adding to the beachy elegance conveyed throughout.

Meanwhile, the W Residence’s owners have grown children, so they wanted their second home to reflect a private getaway with “space and comfort,” says the client. Accents are sensual and adventurous, many evoking a faraway—Eastern and Arabic—sensibility. In the foyer, a deep cobalt wall plays bold backdrop to vintage Asian wooden tables. Just as dramatic, a pair of Holly Hunt convex mirrors framed in dark walnut adds a sculptural dimension to the living room, helping to transmit the exotic minimalism that envelops the apartment.

against a white background is the theme

for both bedrooms.

W RESIDENCEThese bedrooms achieve a transporting effect that evokes Asia and the Middle East.

Focused on spaciousness and natural light, Johanson turned to each unit’s second bedroom, which actually wasn’t a bedroom at all, but a small, windowless den. In each, the designer added a sliding glass door by Lualdi Porte, which, she says, “imitates the floor-to-ceiling windows of the apartment, so all of a sudden light comes into that little room even if you leave the door closed. It creates the perception of having more space.”

The endless Atlantic views figure in the color scheme for both apartments. In the M Residence, sea-blues and turquoise appear in the contemporary artwork above the sofa and in the chocolate-hued rug. Meanwhile, the master suite in the W Residence announces its seafront setting in tones of aqua and green, along with

clients’ favored violets and pastels. The textured Missoni throws and pillows, and the objets d’art from Nest Casa—found in both residences—play off the ever-shifting ribbons of ocean. “It would just not look finished without these accessories, which melt into the colors of the water,” Johanson explains. “They really pull the designs together.”

Both spaces have a relaxed quality, which is achieved through the use of neutral colors, evident in the interplay of white and wood. In each apartment, white marble flooring required balance with a warmer element, so Johanson brought in natural wood finishes “to contrast the colder look of the stone.” In the W Residence’s master bedroom, sleek white dressers rest opposite the bespoke wood-framed bed designed by Johanson. “I complemented the white furniture

with the warm look of walnut,” says the designer, who also added an intimate wallpapered niche to the wall, allowing the bed to perfectly nestle within it.

Drawing from the clients’ visions and inspirations, a pair of blank canvases has been transformed—one into a smart, sophisticated space for a growing family, the other into something decidedly more worldly, even daring. Among the points of difference between the two apartments, there is one crucial structural similarity: Johanson removed an entire wall in each of the master suites, creating an enviable open-wardrobe system custom-fitted with streamlined cabinetry by Ornare. “I first suggested this to one of the owners,” Johanson says. “Then the other one loved the idea, so they ended up doing the same thing.”

MODEL MANAGEMENTDespite having to work with the same floor plan in two apartments, designer Piret Johanson found inventive ways to please both clients. Ph
