The threat posed by the cyclonic storm FANI did not deter 392 players from all over India in reaching Visakhapatinam on time to throw their lot in the 33rd VMRDA national under 13 Open & Girls chess championship organized by Visakha district chess Association from May 4 to 12, 2019. Realising the gravity of the situation due to rescheduling of flights and trains the All India Chess Federation postponed the commencement of first round by three hours to help all the players report for the first round without any hiccup. In all, 245 boys and 147 girls representing 26 states and union territories have entered the fray in this eleven round swiss event which will conclude on May 12. Earlier in a glittering ceremony Shri. K,Bhaskar, I.A.S., District collector, Visakhapatinam formally inaugu-rated the event by moving the king pawn in the chess board.

Curiously both the champions in Open and Girls drew their final round, targeted 9 points from eleven games and tied for the first place. Both emerged as the Champions via first tie break , the direct encounter (In a three way in open and two way tie in girls) way tie . Both champions were richer by Rs.27000/-.

As fortune favours the brave, cyclone FANI spared the port city of Visakhapatinam where 392 courageous children converged for the war of nerves over the 64 squares. It was a blessing in disguise that the FANI effect had lowered the

mercury level in Visakhapatnam with the players enjoying a moderate temperature during the tournament period The playing venue was a centrally located Children Arena in VMRDA Complex owned by the Govern-ment of Andhra Pradesh. It is very hearten-ing to note that the place is ear marked only

for the children activities. The two fully air conditioned separate halls for Open and Girls were spacious and elite looking. As the entire complex had a centralized air condition even the waiting persons did not feel the outside temperature. The organisers namely VDCA ensured that all the players and the accom-panying persons get food inside the complex itself on the first and last day plus two days when there was double round by arranging delicious lunch for all the people free of cost.

Now coming to the true picture of the games, the cool temperature that was prevailing inside the tournament hall did not deter the players to generate heat and dust over the sixty four squares in all the eleven rounds. In the girls section the Top seed from Tel-angana Velpula Sarayu started her dream run from the fifth round notching up five straight victories. However hot pursuit for the title was halted by Boramanikar Tanisha (Maharashrtra) when she held the top seed to a creditable draw in the sixth round. This helped WCM Kirti Mayur Patel also from Ma-harashtra to catch up the overnight leader with 6.5 points from seven rounds. The battle line was drawn in the eighth round between the top seed Velpula Sarayu and the 17th seed Kirti Mayur Patil. The top seed justi-fied her seeding by trouncing her opponent with a brilliant mating net after trapping the uncastled black’s king. At the beginning of the ninth round Velpula had stretched her sole lead by full point. However she conced-ed two consecutive draws on Round 9 and 10 against her team mate Kheerti Gangta and V.Renganayaki (Karnataka) respectively. Curiously in both games her opponents were maintaining a commanding position. Despite dropping a point from two rounds Sarayu was maintaining a slender half point lead with 8.5 points over her rivals Kirti Mayur Patel and

From the Editor’s deskAsian Continental Chess held in China witnessed exceptional performances from Indian Grandmasters. GM Karthikeyan Murali’s fifth round game with a stunning queen sacrifice to outwit Iranian prodigy GM Alireza

Firouzja was the toast of the tournament. Karthikeyan bagged silver and GM S.P.Sethuraman a bronze in the classical format. In addition to the above two, GMs S.L.Narayanan and Abhijeet Gupta also qualified for the World Cup 2019.Nihal Sarin’s gold and S.L.Narayanan’s bronze in the Blitz event were pleasant additions to the medal tally.

From a 13-year old prodigy who won Chennai Open in 2013, GM Aravind Chithambaram has now become National Champion in all formats. His success at the National Senior Championship last December is followed by titles in National Rapid and Blitz he took at jalandhar last month. These are featured in the centre colour pages of this issue. the dark horse of the championship Pande Miracle (Orsissa). Velpula continued her drawing spree in the final round too against WCM Wankhade Sanskrt (Maharashtra) to end up with 9 points from eleven rounds with an unbeaten record. Kirti Mayur Patel of Maha-rashtra capitalized the opportunity to tie up for the first place by inflicting a victory over Pande Miracle in the final round. In a two way tie for the title Velpula Sarayu was adjudged as the champion via direct encounter, the first para meter in the tie break system in the indian national championships. The runner up was Kirti Mayur Patel of Maharashtra. Ren-ganayaki of Karnataka who outmaneuvered Yash Jyoti Bir of West Bengal in this round finished third with 8 points in a nine way tie on account of higher buchholtz score.

But it was a different story in the Open cat-egory which witnessed the change of guard for the leadership in the successive rounds. The top seed here FM C.Pranesh of Tamil Nadu faced a shocking defeat at the hands of an underdog Shaik Sumer Arsh of Telangana as early as in the fourth round. With the top seed out of contention, the second seed Pranav and the third seed FM Jubin Jimmy were the joint leaders at the end of the sixth round with full score. On the seventh round in a scintillating game Pranav overpowered his rival Jubin Jimmy to sit pretty on the top with 7 points as a sole leader. Although he enjoyed a full point lead at this point of time he slipped to joint lead when he lost a crucial match against Pranesh in the eighth round. Pranesh back to form did not leave his driver’s seat when he tamed another rival Jubin Jimmy in the ninth round to maintain half a point lead with 8 points over Pranav who dropped half a point against the fourth seed CM Nikhil Magizhnan. In the crucial tenth and the penul-timate Pranesh too settled for a draw against his teammate Nikhil Magizhnan. At the same time Pranav overcame stiff resistance offered by Krishnan Rithvik (Maharashtra) and scored a full point to join Pranesh for the leadership. With the final round in the offing the line up was that Pranesh and Pranav were sharing

the joint lead with 8.5 points followed by four others on 8 points. The top two tables was hassle free with the leaders drawing their final round against their respective opponents to target 9 points. FM Jubin Jimmy who was also a hot contender for the title throughout the championship capitalized this opportunity to outwit Illampariti Another important feat was in Open the top three seeds finished in that order but in Girls only the top seed could justify her seeding.

In a glittering Valedictory function Smt.G.Sri-jana,I.A.S.,Joint Collector, Visakhaptnam Dis-trict felicitated the winners in the presence of Shri. D.V.Sundar, Vice President FIDE , Shri. Bharath Singh Chauhan, Secretary, AICF, APCA and VDCA officials

White to play and winThe striking simplicity of the above study is misleading. In fact the utmost accu-racy is required here from both sides. It is possible to predict with certainty that the black knight will be sacrificed for the white h-pawn.The Black king will then move quickly over to the remaining pawns. White will play c4-c5 in an attempt to promote one of his pawns.A race will develop in which white will promote when black’s c-pawn reaches the seventh rank. The result seems to be a theoretical draw.

Lets try: 1.Kg7 Nxh6 2.Kxh6 Ke3 3.c5 bxc5 4.b6 c4 5.b7 c3 6.b8Q c2 7.Kg5 Kd2! (not 7….c1Q?? 8.Qf4+) indeed, a draw. White though, has another possi-bility on the first move.1.h7 Nf6+ 2.Kg7 Nxh7 3.Kxh7 Ke3 4.c5 bxc5 5.b6 c4 6.b7 c3 7.b8Q c2 We have reached the same position but instead of the WK being on h6 it is now on h7.It takes a really over-flowing dose of imagination to grasp from the diagram position the significance of the difference: 8.Qh2!! c1Q 9.Qh6+ and wins.Note that 8…Kd3 8.Qh6 Ke2 10.Qc1 leads to the same result.From’Creative chess’ by Amatzia Avni

Asian Continental Chess Championships, China

Karthikeyan Murali , Sethuraman win Silver and BronzeNihal wins Asian blitz

A report by GM Srinath Narayanan

Asian Continental Chess Championship was held at Xingtai, China from 06 to 16 June,2019.For-mer Asian Champion GM Sethuraman played a seamless event for the first 8 rounds and looked set to add another Asian Championship to his belt. However, winning in sports require more than just playing well and more often than not, in the end it all comes down to who plays better

in the final moment. GM Le Quang of Vietnam managed to breach Se-thuraman’s Berlin wall to win the Asian Championship 2019. Despite a disappointing finish, Sethuraman won the Bronze medal and sealed his qualification spot to the World Cup.

GM Murali Karthikeyan overcame back to back defeats to score a fine victory over GM Parham Maghsodloo of Iran in the final round to finish second. Although he didn’t win the tournament, the brilliant Qxc3+ against Iranian wunderkid GM Alireza Firouzja headlined the tournament and was definitely the game of the tournament, and perhaps even the game of the year or more.

GM S.L.Narayanan won an important game against the tournament’s top seed GM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi. He then sealed his world cup qualification spot with a draw against GM Rinat Jumabayev of Kazakhstan. He finished 4th in the Classical event and finished very strongly in the blitz event to win the last six games, win a bronze medal and cap off a

succesful event. GM Abhijeet Gupta was the 4th Indian to qualify for a world cup with a well calculated quick draw against Chinese National Champion GM Lu Shanglei. Young GM Nihal Sarin had half point too less for world cup qualification and finished in the 11th place, but played powerfully to win the blitz event. After a solid and smooth start with 3 points out of 4 games, he took off to win the last 5 games with crucial wins over fellow prodigies GM Praggnanandhaa and GM Alireza, among other strong GMs as well. This brought India’s overall medal tally apart from the 4 qualification spots to the world cup. Karthikeyan Murali , Sethuraman, S.L.Narayanan and Abhijeet Gupta qualified for the World Cup 2019.

WomenWGM Vaishali was India’s best performer in both the Classical and blitz with strong finishes in both the sections. She finished 5th in the classical section and 6th in the blitz respective-ly. WGM Bhakti was India’s best hope and contender for most of the tournament. She was leading halfway through the tournament, but like GM Karthikeyan in the open, Bhakti also lost the crucial rounds 7 and 8. In the end she had to settle for a disappointing 7th place. However, she can take the solace in the fact that soon she will be addressed as IM Bhakti Kulkarni, as she completed the rating requirements by crossing 2400 in the live ratings.

Position after 9.Nb3A purely positional sacrifice of the Queen after 21 minutes of thought. From this I infer that this was an improvisation over the board. The exclamation mark is for the courage and imagination. I do not know or even care about the objective assesment of the position, but from the practical player's point of view it is quite hard for White to deal with this over the board. First White has to overcome the psycological shock of having to deal with the very rare Queen sacrifice for a couple of minor pieces. And secondly it is not at all easy to defend with

keeps increasing his control of and utilizing the weakened dark squares in the opponent's camp. 15.Kc2 Nc6 16.h4 Bf4 f4 square becomes a safe haven for Black's minor pieces.

(Position after 16..Bf4)

17.Qd1 Ne5! Note that Black's pieces are protecting each other, and his pawn structure is intact which is also protecting one another. White's pieces and especially his Queen is help-less without any targets to attack. On the other hand Black mops up the weak pawns (c4,f3) and relentlessly moves forward. 18.Nc1 Bd7 19.a4 Rac8 20.Ne2 Bh6 21.g5 Bg7 22.Bh3 Nxf3 23.Qd3 Ne5 24.Qxe3 Nxc4 25.Qf2 [If 25.Qxa7 Bc6 (25...Nc5 is possible but not necessary 26.Bxd7 Ra8 27.Qxa8 Rxa8 28.Bb5) 26.Ng3 Ra8 27.Qf2 Bxa4+ White's position collapses.] 25...Rc5 26.Rhb1 Bc6 27.Bg2 f5! the Queen (It is a great attacking piece, but not as good as a defender as the pieces with lesser value will constantly harass it). And finally there is this over estimation of the position in the lines of "White should be winning, I should be able to punish my op-ponent for this travesty etc."10.bxc3 dxe3 11.f3 Ambitious, but a bit risky too. White wants to keep his pawn structure intact and hopes to encircle the e3–pawn in the long run. Alas this does not happen in the game, and the pawn on e3 turns out to be a thorn in White's flesh. [11.Qc2 exf2+ 12.Kxf2 Nc6 Black has two minor pieces and a pawn for the sacrificed Queen. But more importantly, White's weak pawn strucure, and a slightly weakened King and the lack of control of dark squares from White's viewpoint give Black a positional compensation for the Queen.

11...Nh5! [It is important to note that White's pawn being placed on h3 is a key aspect of Black's sacrifice. If the pawn were on h2, White would have been able to play g2–g3 and neutralise all Black's activity. But, because of this little detail, Black now pursues the weakened f4 square with full vigour!12.Qc1 Bh6 13.g4 Nf4 14.Kd1 Ne6 With the exception of the pawn on c3, all other White's pawns stand on light squares. Coupled with the fact that White misses his dark squared Bishop clearly underline his helplessness on the dark squares. From here on Black simply

28.gxf6 Bxf6 [28...Rxf6 29.Qg3 Bh6!? All Black's pieces are effectively placed and pose a dominating position!]

29.Rf1 Bxc3 [Perhaps even simpler was 29...Bg7!? 30.Qg1 Rxf1 Any capture on f1 leads to material losses. Quite ge-ometric! 31.Bxf1 (31.Rxf1 Bxa4+) 31...Bxe4+]

30.Qxc5 Nxc5 31.Rxf8+ Kxf8 32.Kxc3 Ne5–+ [The position has transformed into one where Black is an exchange down but has three pawns in return. But more than the material distribution, White's problem lies in the fact that his remaining isolat-ed pawns are also very weak and Black's pawns are connected and well protected by his pieces. So Black is slowly but surely winning!]

33.a5 Nxe4+ 34.Bxe4 Bxe4 35.Nd4 Bd5 36.Nb5 a6 37.Nc7 Bc6 38.Rf1+ Kg7 39.Ne6+ Kh6 40.Rf8 Kh5 41.Rh8 h6 42.Rh7 Kxh4 43.Rxh6+ Kg4 44.Nd4 Kg5 45.Rh2 Bd5 46.Re2 Kf4 47.Rf2+ Nf3 48.Re2 e5 49.Nc2 Be4 50.Ne3 d5 51.Kb4 Nd4 52.Re1 Kf3

Masters of the past-100 Jose Capablanca

José Raúl Capablanca (Havana, Cuba, 19 November 1888 – New York, 8 March 1942) was a Cuban chess player who was World Chess Champion from 1921 to 1927.Capablanca was a child prodigy with an astonishing natural talent for the game. He grew up into a cultured and charming man, whom the Cuban government made its roving ambassador-at-large. He was a media celebrity and probably the Cuban best-known to the rest of the world.

José Raúl Capablanca was the second surviving son of an army officer learned the rules of the game at the age of four by watching his father play. He was particularly dominant in rapid chess, winning a tournament ahead of the reigning World

Chess Champion, Emanuel Lasker, in 1906. San Sebastian tournament of 1911 was "one of the strongest five tournaments held up to that time", as all the world's leading players competed except the World Champion, Lasker, who was inactive in serious play at the time. Capablanca won brilliantly against Bernstein in the very first round, and more simply against Nimzowitsch. He astounded the chess world by taking first place, with a score of six wins, one loss and seven draws, ahead of Akiba Rubinstein, Milan Vidmar, Frank Marshall, Carl Schlechter and Siegbert Tarrasch. His loss, against Rubinstein, was one of the most brilliant achievements of the latter's career.Capablanca was now recognized as a serious contender for the world championship.

In January 1920, Emanuel Lasker and Capablanca signed an agreement to play a World Championship match in 1921. The match was played in March–April 1921; Lasker resigned it after just fourteen games, having lost four games and won none. Vladimir Kramnik thought that Lasker played quite well and the match was an "even and fascinating fight" until Lasker blundered in the last game. Kramnik's explanation was that Capablanca was twenty years younger, a slightly stronger player, and had more recent competitive practice.

Since Capablanca had won the New York 1927 tournament overwhelmingly, and had never lost a game to Alekhine, he was regarded by most pundits as the clear favorite in their 1927 World Chess Championship match. However, Alekhine won the match, played at Buenos Aires, by 6 wins, 3 losses, and 25 draws – the longest World Championship match until the World Chess Championship 1984–85 between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov. Alekh-ine's victory surprised almost the entire chess world.

Capablanca finished fourth, one point behind the joint winners at Moscow in 1935.During these triumphs Capablanca began to experience debilitating symptoms of hypertension. and could only finish seventh of the eight players at the 1938 AVRO tournament, an élite contest designed to select a challenger for Alekhine's world title. Capablanca's high blood pressure was not correctly diagnosed and treated until after the AVRO tournament, and caused him to lose his train of thought towards the end of playing sessions.
