Welcome everyone to WIN Stadium – The Wolf Den for our Round 12 match against

Parramatta Eagles FC.

Half way through the season, and it’s fair to say, we find ourselves a little behind where we were planning to be at this stage of the year.

The boys have been very competitive in every match we’ve played, but a lack of luck at times, a loss of focus in crucial situations and possibly a touch of complacency have cost us significantly.

The major issue however has been our consistency.

We seem to turn up against the top of the table teams and follow this up by letting our guards down against the teams below us on the ladder or the ones we are expected to beat.

It just goes to show the high standard of this year’s competition.

There are no easy teams and on their day, any team can beat anyone.

Makes for a strong, hard and very exciting season.

The beauty for us is there are 11 more games still to come.

Plenty of time left in the season for the mighty Wolves to bounce back and start our climb up the ladder.

The entire squad have spent the past week re-evaluating and are poised and focused to respond in the best way possible.

Good, fast, hard, quality football and stringing some victories together.

They boys have pledged to eliminate the inconsistencies in our performances and show the rest of the league just how potent a team we really are.

And it all begins right here, today, at WIN Stadium – The Wolf Den, against Parramatta Eagles FC.

Our home crowds have been excellent this season and our team loves nothing better than playing in front of the faithful at the best home ground in the competition.

We have enjoyed a very strong run here at WIN Stadium and are looking for it to continue.

3 wins, a draw and a loss from our first 5 home matches have proven what a difficult ground WIN Stadium in for visiting teams.

Making our home ground a fortress and tightening up our performances away from home will see us make a big statement for the remainder of the competition.

We know we have the players to make a big splash.

We have no doubt the pride, talent and passion burns strongly in every one of our players.

We have absolutely no doubt our best form is in front of us.

We know what needs to be done and we will make sure it is done.

Watch and enjoy the football on offer today.

Wollongong Wolves v Parramatta Eagles FC.

The start of our impressive run home.

GO THE WOLVES!

MATCH PREVIEW

THE OPPOSITION:

The Wollongong Wolves FC welcome Parramatta FC to WIN Stadium for this Round 12 fixture of the PlayStation NPLNSW Mens 1 competition. This will be the 29th meeting in league and cup games between the two sides since the first in 1987.

THE OPPOSITION TODAY – PARRAMATTA FC

Parramatta last won honours in 2010 season in the NSW Premier League Mens 2 by winning the Premiership and promotion into Mens 1 competition.

Parramatta finished 2016 in 8th position on 27 points from 8 wins and 11 defeats and scored and conceded 31 and 46 goals respectively with a goal difference of minus 15, bettering three teams. In seven games the team did not score which was the second highest and tied with one other team. Three clean sheets were achieved and Marco Sama was the top scorer with 6 and nine other players scored also. The best result sequence without losing was 2, win and win in Rounds 15 and 16. The best winning margin was 3-1 in Round 6 and 12 against Sydney Olympic and Blacktown Spartans and the highest defeat margin was 5-1 in Rounds 3 and 7 with Manly United and Sydney United being the opposition.

Frank Cosentino is the coach again in 2017 and he has added new players such as Jacob Ott and Jordan Crighton from Blacktown Spartans while the Sama brothers Gosue and Marco have been joined by another brother Nicolo from overseas, and all will pull on the Parramatta shirt. In addition, Ryan Norval from APIA and Howard Fondyke from Sydney Olympic have joined.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

In Round 5 in the 2004/05 season on Sunday, 19th December 2004, the two teams met at Crehan Park.

Wolves: Daniel Beltrame, Jacob Timpano, Robert Cazzoli, Dominic Longo, Ben Blake, Michael Clare, Mineo Bonetig, Alvin Ceccoli, Adam Hughes, Chad Bishop and Shane McGirr. Craig Morton and Daniel Aliffi replaced Cazzoli and Clare. Adrian Alston was the coach.

Parramatta: Peter Munsie, Michael Mouyis, John Kelso, Noel Spencer, Mathew Clowes, Michael O’Shea, Nathan Rivera, Michael Brown, Mark Bridge, Ben Delicata and Richard Cardozo. Nathan Burns, Andrew Kane and Michael De Bono replaced O’Shea, Rivera and Cardozo. The coach was Trevor Morgan.

It took an hour in before Parramatta took the lead. Prior, in the first half Bishop was sending in good crosses but McGirr, Hughes and Clare failed to capitalize. Conversely, Parramatta’s Bridge had a near miss and together with Brown and Spencer spurned further opportunities. However, Spencer had done the lead-up work, which allowed Delicata to score with a well-taken shot in the second half. Six minutes later the Wolves replied. A curling Bishop corner kick found its way to Hughes. He touched it on to Ceccoli. He then produced a low trajectory shot, which flew powerfully into the goal. As each team strived for a winner, Beltrame thwarted Bridge and Timpano’s long distance shot nearly crept into the goal but Munsie’s fingertips saved the day. A Bishop corner kick rolled along the cross bar for a time causing consternation before the winning goal was scored by Brown in the 82nd minute as the defence opened up. Post match Brown stated ‘that was a good result’ and ‘a good Christmas present’.

(The player’s comment is taken from writer’s original interviews for the match reports at that particular time.)

THE MATCH - UP

Parramatta and the Wolves have scored 76 goals between them in all their meetings with the Wolves scoring the most, 43 to 33.

SELECTED REPRESENTATIVE OF BOTH CLUBS - FABIAN IACOVELLI

Iacovelli played for the Eagles in 2011 and was with the Wolves in 2012. With the Eagles he scored 3 goals, two of which eventuated in the Round 1 draw with Bonnyrigg White Eagles. He scored in the 18th and 35th minutes. He replicated this multiple number of goals in a single match by scoring a brace in Round 3 versus Rockdale City Suns for his only goals with the Wolves after coming on from the bench. He started in three games and came on twelve times as a substitute. His first strike came in the 88th minute when he rammed the ball home and after being set up by Mark Picciolini, while he got his second to shore up the 3-0 win. He also played in two cup games and was a substitute entrant in the Elimination Final game.

Iacovelli formerly played with the Newcastle Jets in the National Youth League and in 2017 plies his trade with Kemblawarra Fury in the Illawarra Premier, a competition he has played in since 2013.

WOLVES’ PAST PLAYER OF NOTE - TREVOR FRANCIS

English international striker Trevor Francis, who also played for clubs Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Sampdoria, Atalanta, Glasgow Rangers, came to Wollongong City for a three game stint as a guest player in 1988. His first game was in Round 16 against Adelaide City and Francis goaled as well. His effort was the winner in the 71st minute. He also scored the solitary goal in the next game versus Melbourne Knights. However in his third and final game, Footscray won 4-1 home at Brandon Park and he could not, alas, get on the score sheet score.

Following on from the Wolves, Francis played for Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday in England before retiring and moving into football management for a time. He is now a football pundit on television in England.

#PS4NPLNSWLOCAL FOOTBALL CLUB

GERRINGONG Gerringong Breakers FC was established in 1985 by the ‘Founding Five’ members Eion Lockard, Phil Walker, Peter ‘Pistol’ Pearce, Jeff Quine & Dave Took.

The ‘Founding Five” were local lads that were playing for various clubs throughout the South Coast who decided it was time for a local team. The club entered a 3rd Grade Men’s Team into the Shoalhaven competition which they won in their first year.

Initially games were played on a shared field with Rugby League and Cricket on what is now known as Cronin’s Oval in Gerringong. This often led to disagreements as the league and football fields ran across each other and schedules often clashed. On many occasions the football field was mowed in and posts erected in the morning running north/south and while the league field ran east/west

In the early to mid 90’s, as the club grew and boots were passed down to the next generation, the club endeavoured to find its own home. They moved down the road to Gerry Emery Reserve (unofficially known as “The Breaker Dome”), an old cow paddock acquired by council, with no fences and facilities. Over the years the club, led by key life members and helped by local council, endeavoured and raised enough money and man power to build the clubhouse, amenities and facilities we have today. Kiama Council supplied the materials and the club and community members donated their time and effort in helping build the facilities we have today.

The early 2000’s were hard years for the club as we lost many of our talented players to Sydney Clubs and representative teams. With a small area and limited player numbers, the club could only field limited senior and junior teams. By 2010 the club was back on the rise with many footballers returning to the club in their late 20’s and early 30’s.

Gerringong Breakers are apart of the Shoalhaven District Football Association and are one of the smallest clubs in terms of members. In its 33rd year, The Breakers have grown to over 250 members, largely made up of junior footballers. The Breakers won their inaugural Men’s 1st Grade Premiership in 2012 and have followed it up with a Minor Premiership in 2016. Not to be outdone our Ladies have had a clean sweep of the competition in seasons 2015 and 2016 taking out both 1st and 2nd Grade Championships.

The club has harnessed some individual talent with many continuing their passion for football throughout the Shoalhaven, Illawarra, National Premier League and even a few women with scholarships in the US College system, including Chelsea Ford. Chelsea’s two and a half year adventure in the United States has led to numerous offers and scholarships. Chelsea Ford is currently under scholarship with a University in Carolina. Chelsea was apart of the Breakers Ladies that took out back to back premierships and has won every individual and team prize available at Shoalhaven Association level including Rookie for the Year and Player of the Year. Still only 19 yrs of age, Chelsea has a

FEATURE STORY

LOOKING 1999/2000 SEASON - PART TWO

(Part 1 of this article was published in the Round 10 Wolves v Rockdale City Suns on the 14th May 2017)It was in Round 25 that Auckland Kingz scored the first goal but conceded five as the Wolves ran rampart in the second half in their fourth meeting of the season. Mennillo started the ball rolling when he hit a low shot with power into the net after receiving the ball from Horsley. The second came after Horsley had won a corner kick. The ball into the area with Reid collecting it and powered his left shot home. Horsley rounded the ‘keeper to score, then Horsley set up Young for his twelfth goal of the campaign. Blake’s header brought up the fifth and his first goal. Gippsland Falcon kept the Wolves to a draw with Mennillo scoring the Wolves contribution in the ninth minute following Horsley’s good lead-up play. Masi scored versus Marconi but alas Marconi got two. Masi fired the ball after a good effort from him to capture a loose ball. New player and midfielder Mark Robertson made his initial Wolves appearance coming in as a substitute in this match. Round 28 and the Wolves were hot to trot again putting four past a hapless Melbourne Knights with braces to both Chipperfield and Petrovski. Reid provided a centimetre perfect pass to Chipperfield who blew off his marker with pace and precision and from inside the box slotted the ball in. A Knights defender had the ball on his line trying to shield it but Petrovski slid along side to knock the ball into the far corner of the goal frame. Chipperfield added the third by blasting home on thirty-eight minutes with Petrovski getting his second when he dispossessed a defender then struck. Petrovski scored his twelfth goal with the opposition being Adelaide City with a Spencer free kick being blocked on the line allowing Petrovski to connect with the rebound to score. He was denied a penalty later and Cervinski was to the fore in defence. A six-goal demolition of Canberra Cosmos eventuated in the next game. Petrovski’s shot slipped through the fingers of the goalkeeper. Subsequently the ball bounced across of an empty goal and Chipperfield flicked his header in. Chipperfield achieved another brace when he rode a tackle, kept possession then slammed a targeted shot past the custodian. Young was on

fire achieving a four-goal haul. A Chipperfield long pass reached and with the ‘keeper in a quandary Young goaled. Chipperfield was brought down by the goalkeeper. As a result he was summarily dismissed with a penalty kick ensuing. Young converted and added two more goals in the 80th and 91st minute for good measure. Beltrame was back in goal for his fourth appearance. A 2-2 draw with the Brisbane Strikers concluded the match after the Wolves skipped out to a 2-0 lead but the Strikers saved their bacon in the last five minutes. The Wolves had a great chance to wrap up the Premiership with a victory but it wasn’t to be. It was a Petrovski brace for the Wolves. He headed in a Mennillo cross on fifty-seven minutes and prior headed in a high cross before the goalkeeper could react and get his hands on the ball. Young and Cervinski goaled to keep their team on track for the semi-finals versus Parramatta Power. However the penultimate and final game in this longest of any National Soccer League season of thirty-four games saw the Wolves being defeated 1-0 by Perth Glory and 2-1 by Carlton. The Wolves dominated the Glory in the first half but squandered chances. Cervinski was an aerial threat with Horsley and Chipperfield having opportunities that went close. Ceccoli goaled in the Carlton game with a volley to level the scores but Pogliacomi had brought down a player to concede a penalty. Beren Sullivan played his first game in the Carlton match and O’Grady played his second. The final game line-up was Leslie Pogliacomi, Alvin Ceccoli, Robert Stanton, Matt Horsley, Beren Sullivan, Neil Harlock, Sasho Petrovski, David Huxley, Esala Masi, Paul O’Grady and Mark Robertson. Noel Spencer and Ben Blake replaced Huxley and Harlock respectively. The Wolves finished the season in second place with 42 points, two less than the top team but scoring the most goals of any team, 72 and having the best goal difference of 28. The team conceded 44 goals and won 17, drew 9 and lost 8. Young was the top scorer with 19 goals and Cervinski won an award from a Soccer newspaper for best player. This was the initial time that a club had four players in double figures in the goal scorer’s list. The personnel used by coach Theodorakopoulos in the league are listed with their number of starting appearances and their substitute roles.

Stanton (34), Chipperfield (31),

Before a crowd of 8,326, the Wolves won 1-0 to go ahead in the two-legged affair. Horsley and Chipperfield ran ragged down the touchlines getting in behind the Glory defence with their pace. Ceccoli, Stanton and Cervinski were rock solid holding their defensive line. Chipperfield was barrelled over in the 28th minute before Young stepped up to direct his penalty kick in. He could have doubled the score with one on one with the custodian in the second half but the gloved man won out. Masi rounded the ‘keeper but watched in agony as his effort to slowly wind its way past the post. However, the Wolves had finally defeated Perth for the first time this season after losing two earlier ones. 42,764 people were in attendance at the Subiaco Oval in Perth for the second leg. The game looked to be a 0-0 stalemate only for the Glory to edge ahead when Souris was adjudged to have impeded a Glory attacker. The ensuing penalty kick went in and the Glory and the Wolves were even Stevens. Cervinski narrowly headed over a Reid cross in regulation time and Chipperfield looked to have goaled only for the shot stopper to pull off a miraculous save. However, extra time was needed to separate the two teams to decide the winner. It was only three minutes of extra time that the Glory needed before they goaled and this team was the first team into the Grand Final and had a home advantage. It was a Golden Goal and the game was concluded.Back at Brandon Park for the Preliminary Final with Carlton who had knocked off Marconi by three goals over two legs, the Wolves had to win this to get another crack at the Glory. A crowd of 8,034 turned up to see the Wolves defeat Carlton 2-1 in an entertaining game. Masi set up Young to rifle home from 20 metres out in the forty-fifth minute and prior Masi scored in the twenty-fourth minute with a header. Carlton led after eighteen minutes and could have won in the dying moments if not for the goal frame keeping out two attempts

but the Wolves resolve, skill and teamwork got them over the line and into the Grand Final for the very first time. With television showing the game all over Australia and many Illawarra residents glued to the screen they witnessed the home team getting out to a 3-0 lead in the 20th, 33rd and 42nd minutes and for all money looked home and hosed. The Wolves were under the pump and were not playing as well as they were used to. Many of the 43,242 attendant crowd donned the purple colours of the home team while a few hundred with red and white colours contrasted. At half break the coach told the team to remain calm and cool. Souris and Robertson came on and this had an immediate effect as the team immediately began to play with more purpose and verve. Once Chipperfield goaled on fifty-six minutes Perth began to be a little nervy. When Horsley netted thirteen minutes onwards Perth suddenly sensed that they had acted prematurely and the game was now in the balance. It was 3-2 and the Wolves had rallied and with the momentum would more than likely get an equaliser. This they did when Mennillo spotted a rampaging Reid moving forward on the right. He provided a great pass and Reid did the rest. He drove the ball between the legs of the custodian and parity, unlikely as it seemed, was achieved with barely a minute to spare. Extra time was then underway and a Golden Goal would determine the winners and end the game if either team could score. However that was not the scenario and a penalty shootout would determine champions. Young took the first penalty and was successful. Robertson, Ceccoli, Pogliacomi and Petrovski all scored in sequence, as did the first five players for the Glory. Horsley stepped up and the captain missed as the groans went up. Pogliacomi then saved a Glory attempt before Mennillo’s kick was also kept out. Pogliacomi again rose to the occasion to thwart another before Chipperfield converted and Perth did likewise. Reid did not miss and the Wolves were 7-6 in front. Perth needed to get this one but Pogliacomi saved once again moving in the correct direction to become a hero. The Wolves had done the seemingly impossible and were now the Champions. The Grand Final line-up was Les Pogliacomi, Alvin Ceccoli, Robert Stanton, David Cervinski, Matt

#PS4NPLNSWFEATURE STORY

THE The Wolves incumbent goalkeeper Justin Pasfield began his junior career at Lake Heights before moving on to the Wollongong Wolves. His senior career began at sixteen years of age with the Wolves making his debut appearance in the 2001/02 NSL season. His debut was against Northern Spirit at North Sydney Oval with Pasfield coming off the bench in the ninth minute for the injured Dean Anastasiadis who post match had his arm in plaster following a collision, which necessitated the change. As the match progressed, Pasfield made three impressive one handed saves and got his legs in the way to deny a regular Spirit scorer who ultimately finished with a brace. The final score however, was 5-2 to the home team. This was his only game at that time and as well, he was on the books in the following season but again did not get a start. In 2004/05 he ventured overseas and played for Bray Wanderers in the Republic Of Ireland making twenty-eight appearances. Bray is a coastal town on the east coast of Ireland in the county of Wicklow.Back in Australia he was signed as a back-up ‘keeper to Clint Bolton at Sydney FC for the first season of the new A-League competition winning honours as the Champions. Bolton did not miss a beat and Pasfield was again not used. He was there again for the 2006/07 season and again did not gain a start.Sydney United was his next port of call in 2007 following on from the Sydney FC stint with team finishing in sixth position. He made 23 appearances and garnered three clean sheets, one of which was against the Wolves in Round 4 with his team winning 2-0. Following on he was back up custodian at Queensland Roar.In 2008, he was back at the Wolves for his second stint. He played 17 times in the league with one cup game appearance and two final appearances, one in the all important Grand Final versus Sutherland Sharks at Penrith’s CUA Stadium. Late in this match, he snuffed out a Sutherland scoring opportunity by getting down to block. In all, he achieved seven clean sheets in the league. However in the Round 11 match versus Sutherland Sharks, Brad Boardman controlled a Brendan Gan mistimed shot to send the ball high into the goal with Pasfield, rooted to the line in a state of disbelief with the home crowd stunned by his inertia! However, despite this glitch and every goalkeeper have these from time to time, his performance between the posts assisted the team

greatly in this successful season.

The next season he journeyed to the Newcastle Jets in 2008/09 before North Queensland Fury came calling. He had two seasons with the then A-League club 2009/10 and 2010/11, achieving two clean sheets in each season from thirty-nine appearances. In the 20011/12, 2012/13 and 20013/14 A League seasons, he was at the Central Coast Mariners making a total of fourteen appearances achieving four clean sheets, one each in his first and third years with two for his second year. He was there to collect a Championship medal when the club won the 2012/2013 Grand Final. In the 2nd November 2013 game versus Newcastle Jets, Pasfield produced a diving tip over from Newcastle United’s Rueben Zadkovich’s cross shot, with this match concluding in a 2-2 draw at Hunter Stadium. Another overseas club, Tampines Rovers in Singapore, was his next venture where he made fourteen appearances in total. In 2015, he was back at Sydney where his former Sydney FC teammate, Mark Rudan was now the coach. He totalled nineteen appearances in the league with five clean sheets being achieved. In the Round 4 game at Edensor Park versus the Wolves, Pasfield came off his line and watched as David Stojic’s effort went narrowly wide. Earlier he had done enough to deny Chris Price. In the 2015 FFA Cup Round 4 versus APIA Leichhardt, Pasfield’s two eye catching saves in the penalty shoot out assisted his team to triumph 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out, after the scores were locked a 2-2 after extra time.He returned to his home town team for his third Wolves stint in 2016 making 19 league appearances and played in the FFA Cup Round of 32 against Sydney FC when he saved a penalty in front of record Round of 32 crowd of eight thousand odd crowd. He went down to his right to save a Milos Ninkovic penalty kick effort. So far in 2017 he has been equal to his best form. He was been twice recognized for ‘Saves Of The Week’ after his impressive displays in Rounds 3 and 4 and has been selected in the ‘Team Of The Week‘ in Rounds 4 and 8. In Round 4 versus Manly United, he denied a well-experienced striker’s point blank header and finger tipped a long distance shot around the post. In the Round 11 match versus his former club Sydney FC he made a number of saves In his younger days, Pasfield also represented Australia in the Young Socceroos in 2004 and 2005. He certainly is ‘the keeper.

#PS4NPLNSWFEATURE STORY

WALKING DOWN Before I moved from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney many moons ago, my impression of Australian sporting culture was rather one dimensional and naive. My viewpoint was purely based on what I’d seen of Australian national teams in sports such as rugby union, rugby league and netball, codes that enjoy a popular following in my homeland.Back then, whenever New Zealand lined up against Australia in each of these sports, those who wore the green and gold were predominantly white Australians of British heritage. Players with names like Shaw, O’Connor, Lynagh and Hawker. Rogers, Cronin and Reddy. To me, that was normal.Australian football (soccer) meanwhile, was completely different. As a youngster, my first sporting love was football (soccer). I played for Mt Wellington, one of the most successful clubs in the country, and represented Auckland at the Under 16 nationals.I remember watching my senior team, the national league champions of New Zealand, play a Trans-Tasman challenge match against Australian NSL champions Marconi. I also remember looking through the match program and noting that while every Mt Wellington player was of Anglo-Celtic heritage (plenty of Poms and Scots in that lineup), the Stallions’ team was very different. European names such as Prskalo, Jankovics, Krncevic and Vieri jumped off the page and hit me squarely between the eyes.Being a curious fellow, I wondered where these players with the exotic names had come from and wondered why they were playing for an Australian team.Little did I know that my interest in that Marconi Stallions side was the beginning of a love affair with Australian football and a journey that would lead me to write a bit about a game that I’d come to adore. Not long after watching the Trans-Tasman stoush, I moved to Sydney and realised that not only was multiculturalism alive and well in Australia’s largest city, the sporting landscape here was vastly different to the one I’d left behind.Unlike New Zealand, rugby in Australia was dominated by private school old boys and university-educated chaps who earned a crust in the professions. Doctors, lawyers and stock brokers were a dime a dozen within the Wallaby ranks.

League and Aussie rules were the most popular winter games, the games for the masses. And finally, there was football - working class to the core but often regarded as the black sheep on the local sporting landscape. Why? Because unlike the others, football was the one and only sport that truly represented the multicultural melting pot that is modern day Australia.I even turned out for a South American side in an Ethnic Cup tournament (apparently my Maori genes gave me the look required to qualify for the team) and couldn’t believe the popularity of the event and the technical brilliance showed by the Latinos and continental Europeans. The Brits weren’t too bad either and part-timers or not, the talent on display was astounding.Fast forward to 1996 and I’m a rookie photojournalist earning a crust contributing words and pictures to a weekly rag called Inside Soccer. As part of my beat, I don’t miss a home game involving NSL giants Sydney United, Sydney Olympic and Marconi Stallions.I also cover various games in the NSW state leagues, visiting clubs such as Blacktown City, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Manly, Melita, Rockdale and Sutherland.I gradually learn the storied histories of clubs that were established by ethnic communities as long ago as the 1950s, when an avalanche of European immigrants flooded into the urban capitals of Sydney and Melbourne, changing the demographic of a nation.Italians, Greeks, Croatians, Serbians, Macedonians, Maltese and the Jewish community formed their own football clubs across Sydney and those clubs played a huge role in the assimilation process. These communities identified with their football clubs as outlets for social interaction and a sense of belonging. The clubs also attracted to their games large and boisterous crowds that were both the envy and the bane of the locals. My football journey continues as I attend matches and training sessions and press conferences. I read about the history of the local game and like every self-respecting “football addict” get my TV fix on SBS. I speak to people involved at all levels, from grass roots to the top end, enhancing my football education and enjoyment of the game. I can’t get enough. In 1996, Branko Culina’s Sydney United are the

aristocrats of the Australian game and with the likes of Zeljko Kalac, Tony Popovic, Ante Milicic, David Zdrilic and Kresimir Marusic, it’s no surprise that they play a sublime brand of football that takes them all the way to the NSL Grand Final. Unfortunately, Culina’s men suffer an upset away loss to Brisbane Strikers in front of a record crowd of 44,000.At Olympic, I admire the goal-scoring nous of Kris Trajanovski and Abbas Saad, the skill and majesty of Milan Blagojevic, and the industry of Peter Tsekenis. There’s also a 17-year-old kid by the name of Brett Emerton who will go on to play almost 100 games for the club before forging a career at Dutch giants Feyenoord, and Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League.Meanwhile, over the coming years I also grow to admire the Wollongong Wolves, who claim consecutive NSL Premierships in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 with a talented roster that includes Scott Chipperfield, Matt Horsley and Paul Reid. The Wolves capture the imagination of the local football community and prove that even a club from regional NSW can foot it with the best.Olympic win their second NSL title in 2001-2002, with Ante Milicic grabbing the winner in the Grand Final against Perth Glory before 42,000 fans in the far west. But despite the big grand final crowds, the NSL is struggling and by early 2004, the competition is shut down and replaced by the new A-League.The collapse of the NSL sees the likes of Sydney United, Sydney Olympic, Wollongong Wolves and Marconi reacquaint themselves with other former national league clubs APIA Leichhardt, Blacktown City, Parramatta Eagles and St George in the NSW Premier League, the elite state competition that kicked off way back in 1957. Today, Marconi and Saints no longer play at the state’s elite level, having been relegated to the second tier; but another former NSL club, and the most successful of them all, Hakoah Sydney City East, has re-emerged from the wilderness to again take their place in the sun.Established by Jewish migrants in 1939, Hakoah Sydney City East won five state Premierships and four grand finals before emerging as the most successful club in National Soccer League history, winning four Championships under the name of Sydney City in 1977, 1980, 1981 and 1982.The club boasted some of this nation’s finest footballers, including Ray Baartz, Jim Patikas, John Kosmina, Jimmy Mackay and Joe Watson. But

unfortunately, despite the incredible success of the team, City just couldn’t draw a crowd and due to financial considerations, the club made the decision to withdraw from the national competition. After some years in the wilderness, Hakoah Sydney City East two years ago won promotion to the PlayStation4 NPL NSW Men’s competition and have since managed to hold their own against the best of the best in NSW.Meanwhile, I discover that Blacktown City is by far the most successful club in NSW state league history, winning more Premierships and more Championships (i.e. grand finals) than anyone else.Sydney United 58 are a close second on the leaderboard, while other clubs such as Parramatta FC, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Hakoah Sydney City East, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Sutherland, South Coast Wolves, Sydney Olympic, Manly United, and Rockdale City Suns also have their names proudly engraved on the honours boards out at Football NSW.Meanwhile, it needs to be said that while the ethnic clubs established by European migrants all those years ago provided the foundation stones for football in NSW, (indeed, in Australia), district/association clubs such as Manly United and Sutherland Sharks have been just as important to the local game, providing opportunities for players and fans alike and boasting rich histories dating as far back as 1930 (Sutherland). There’s also a misconception that the Brits, the Irish and the Aussies haven’t had too much of an influence on local football, but nothing could be further from the truth, as players, coaches and administrators from those backgrounds have been at the forefront of the local game for decades. This weekend Heritage Round will be celebrated at various grounds around Sydney. It’s a round that holds special significance for NSW clubs and celebrates their history and the contribution they’ve made to the football landscape since the start of the 20th century. So to the players and fans who are involved this weekend, enjoy the football and regardless of the history of your club, take a moment to remember the significance of the occasion. Not just in a footballing sense, but also in an historical sense. After all, football history is Australian history and for me, it’s a rich one that I’ve been blessed to enjoy ever since that Marconi side with the exotic names rolled into Auckland all those years ago.By Derek Royal, Football NSW Reporter
