THE BOWTIE BULLETIN November 2013
Next Scheduled Meeting - Monday November 25, 2013
Wow!! it is the Middle of October and not so much has taken place. The Oktoberfest (on the
6th) was a success both monetarily and entertainment wise. Thank you to David Ward Jones
who put everything together before hand so that this could continue, even though he was not
able to attend without his hard work in preparation it would not have. We made over $550.00
for the Social fund, enjoyed some great recipes and had a good time with both auctions, the
highest bid item in the regular auction was Mr. Hollywood's autograph which brought in a
whopping $26.00. Beth Cooper was the lucky winner in that bidding war. I want to thank all
that came out to Atria the end of last month and to the Melanoma display for Beth Cooper and
Max on October 12th. After the display about 10 of us went over to Zaxby's in Cary for the
Service Dog show it was a little chilly and drizzly but fun just the same, Thank you David
Matthews. Jeff Hopp won best interior, Robert Copeland won best paint with his newly
acquired 67 El Camino and to my surprise I won long distance, (everyone there was from
Apex and Cary). We welcomed 5 New club members this past month (two are returning
members) So welcome all to PCCC, glad you could join us and we hope to get better
acquainted soon. Ray has the club registered for the Veterans Day Parade Nov 9th. Parades
are always a good time so come out and show your support for our service men and women.
After the Parade is the Reunion Cruise at Grill 57 from 11 to 5. Don't forget the monthly
meeting on October 28th at Bobby Murray's Chevrolet. "Happy Trails to you until we meet
again" How many remember the show that was the theme for?

Here's some car trivia that should delight you. Read on for very interesting automobile trivia that are worth
sharing. They are bits and tidbits about the cars that we love as well as trivia about automotive
personalities whose contributions to the development of the automobile
immeasurable.
It's always fascinating to learn more about cars. This mode of transportation had
made it possible to traverse long distances and contributed to the progress that we
now enjoy. It stoked the engines of civilization. Now, far-away friends and
families are not so distant anymore.
During the course of the automobile's development, there emerged interesting
information that enrich our knowledge about the automobile and its history.
Chronological evolution

1974 National 55 mph speed limit enacted after oil shortages.

1972 Cars traveled along LA freeways at an average speed of 60 mph. In 1982 the average was only 17 mph!
1974 The average American family spent 33 percent of their yearly income for a new car.
In 1995 the average was 50 percent.
1995 The Big Three sold a whopping 97,000 cars in Japan.
Until next time keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down.
I hope you enjoy this little tidbit on automotive trivia, there will
NOT be a test later, just enjoy.

IT ALL STARTED WITH - By Dave Peedin
I was 15 years old and early on in life I knew I would be a car guy. Loved Chevys /
hated Fords (not true today) but I bought my first car for $35.00. That's right - $35.00!
Unfortunately, it had no motor or transmission but I had to start somewhere and the
price was just right. The car was a 1956 Chevy Bel Air four door hardtop. Bought it from
a transmission shop in Smithfield. If I only knew then what I really had. The body and
interior were in perfect condition. It was light blue and white exterior with a blue
interior.
My oldest brother played saxophone in a
band and one weekend around
Thanksgiving 1968, he was coming back
home to Smithfield late one Saturday
night from a gig down in Fayetteville
when he fell asleep on I-95 North, ran off
the road and totaled his 1962 4 door
Chevy Bel Air. Fortunately, he didn't get
hurt since it was in the wee hours of
Sunday morning and the traffic was light.
He knew I needed a drivetrain for my car so he gave me the engine and transmission
( 283 CI with Powerglide for a Christmas gift). I enlisted a neighbor to help me with the
engine removal and installation ( yes, we pulled it with the aid of a come-a-long and a
big old oak tree in my back yard). We lived in West Smithfield at the time and there was
a recap shop close by on Hwy 70. The owner was having a drawing for a free set of
recapped tires so every day I would get off the school bus near his shop and sit for
hours filling out registration forms and guess who won the tires? You got it me. Since I
had decent tires on the 56 and even better tires on the 62, I asked the shop owner if he
would allow me to swap the new retreads I won for a set of Chrome wheels and he
approved - but I had to agree to be interviewed by a local radio station and serve as a
spokesperson for his business.
So by the time I got my drivers license, I had my car waiting to drive to school and
cruise in on the weekends. Here is why I wish I had known then what I know today:
This 56 Chevy was LOADED for it's time, it was top of the line model with:
Padded Dash
AM/FM "Wonder Bar" radio
Power Windows
Rear Window Defroster
With plenty of chrome, excellent paint, good tires, and chrome wheels, I had one of
coolest rides in Smithfield for my senior year of school. I've never seen another one like
it with all those options. It was in near perfect condition and would be extremely
valuable in today's market. I'd love to have it back.
