Remember when I said at the be-

ginning of the year that we all

should get involved in as many

events as we can in order to pursue

our interests in other aspects of

ham radio? Well I have found that

this year, I have participated in sev-

eral events, such as Baker 2 Vegas,

and other club related activities.

But none has been more intense

than my latest adventure. I am in

the middle of volunteering not just

a little, but a lot with a group

known as the World Police Fire &

Games. It began as a request to

help out, not necessarily in ham

radio, but in what we hams do best

when we do get involved in events

such as Gorman Rally, or B2V, and

that is the tasks of time keeping.

My volunteer position takes me to

the Los Angeles Police Academy

each day where all the athletics and

other volunteers go to register for

the games. Los Angeles is hosting

the event this year. I began work-

ing last Friday for training, and

then began 9-5 from Tuesday, Au-

cludes weekends too! Being a re-

I enjoy not having to go to work

attending was 40. Program Introduction by Margie Hoff-man KG6TBR: Diana Feinberg AI6DF

printed in the Short Circuit was made by Frank O”Dell N6FOD, and sec-

onded by John Isles K6RJC. The mo-tion was approved by the members present.

ing. Membership: Total members 88, per-cent ARRL 81.

sion: Set up went well, but temperature was 109 degrees which made some

tions from the floor besides Paul L’Heureux KD6SMC. Adrienne Sherwood WA6YEO moved to

close the nominations. Steve Hofbauer KM6AIT seconded the motion. Paul L’Heureux KD6SMC was

elected a Board Member. Web site: Pursuant to Board action, I

have retained iPower.com as a web host. Cost $11.95/month after the initial 2 years at $3.95/month. There are startup

fees as well. QNET is still running, but support lines are disconnected. I have established the domain name as

“k6ox.club” since “avarc.club” is still sequestered. I have hastily uploaded the

old site as a mirror. Please try connect-ing to “k6ox.club” and report any errors to Dan Sherwood W6DAS.

iPower has site builder tools. I may look into enhancing the site to add calendar-ing, blogging, photo management, and

newsletter management in the near fu-ture. Dan Sherwood W6DAS wants to define

“webmaster” as an official appointed position – setting out job description,

qualifications, etc. then putting it in the bylaws. Discussion was held. John Isles IV had no objections. However, the dis-

cussion was tabled until the August 3, Board Meeting. This is our first meeting at this new facil-

ity. What do the members think about the Quartz Hill County Library? All

comments were favorable. Mike Beckers KC6YQO wanted the club to seek a different site for 2018 Field

Day at Table Mountain or in Wright-wood. We plan to do that in the next 10 months.

Welcome to Paul KD6SMC our newly elected AVARC Board Mem-ber.

New Business:

HAMCON Participation – 8 VE’s are needed for ARRL testing, our desig-

nated activity. HAMCON will follow my scheduled surgery by less than two weeks. This means there’s a

chance I may not be cleared to partici-pate. In the event of any complica-tions, Adrienne may be tied up as

well. I’m hoping not, but nonetheless we need to be prepared for someone

to step up should this eventuality be realized.

Web site issues: Copy of WHOIS domain registration. Right now, site is a mirror of QNET site. iPower was

supposed to promote domain name in Google, but as of last night I see

Google lists the old domain name www.avarc.av.org in its leading search return. A support request was

submitted to iPower.

President’s Corner...

enjoy helping out and it is reward-

ing to be a part of this event. I have

met people from all over the world

this week. Before partaking in this

bi-annual event, I had no idea what

it was all about. So I have gathered

some history of the event.

It all began in 1967 with the recog-

nition of a former San Diego Police

Captain Veon “Duke” Nyhus who

wanted to promote physical fitness

and camaraderie among members of

the law enforcement community.

He felt this was an important way to

stay fit and actually reduce stress

while increasing to their profes-

sional athletic abilities. Sounds just

like Baker to Vegas.

We hams participate in B2V for

many reasons as well. We want to

hone our skills in a live setting and

make sure our equipment is always

at its best and ready for any occur-

rence when we will need it to be

ready. As far as fitness, for the

hams, not so much, except it does

take some muscles to hoist our

equipment around and set up masts

and other antennas and other gear.

For the folks in uniform, yes, fitness

is a great part of all men and women

in all parts of law enforcement, fire

departments, first responders and

many more job aspects that are re-

lated to serving and protecting the

public. In 1967, it was called the

Police Olympics and the competi-

tions entailed only 16 sports and

were held in San Diego over a pe-

riod of 2 days.

sport. If you desire change, get

involved!

The AVARC web site has been

transferred over to our now

hosting service iPower. A new

domain name has been estab-

lished: k6ox.club. The old do-

main, avarc.club is still active,

although I have replaced the main

page with a redirect over to the

new web site. Please update your

bookmarks as the old host QNET

may disappear at any time. We

may be able to get control of the

old domain name after it expires,

but with QNET not answering any

of my calls or emails, we need to

press on with the new one.

Scout Jamboree on the Air: I got

an email from John Christopher,

Cub Scout Pack 41 in Rosamond,

regarding possible participation in

JOTA, which comes up the

weekend of October 20 – 22. I am

still awaiting details of what the

Scouts want. If anything comes of

it, then a portable HF station

would be set up at the venue of

their choice. Stay tuned.

This is a partial listing of events and activities that

present opportunities for you to get more active in ham

radio. Public service events are a great way to increase

your skills, contribute to the community, and have a lot

of fun! The more you participate, the more you’ll enjoy

our hobby!

As a volunteer, I am working

with another volunteer and we are

gathering all the results and enter-

ing them into the computer and

then those results go live. Both

of us were recruited to handle this

due to our experience working

data entry for Baker to Vegas. I

don’t have the exact count, but it

appears to be well around 80-100

different events that are taking

place in venues all over our city

and county. Next year, the games

go to China, and in 2021, the

Netherlands.

You never know where your ham

radio skills will take you. Learn

as much as you can. I suggest

you find out what you like to do

and keep active. If you have any

ideas, please share them and if

you want to be a strong member

of our club, please consider run-

ning for office. Our elections are

coming up soon with the first

nominations in September. The

final elections for 2018 are in Oc-

tober.

One more thing, HAMCON 2017

is coming up in less than a month.

Again, it is being held at the Tor-

rance Marriott from September

1 5 - 1 7 . P l e a s e g o t o

tion and information.

Hope to see you all there.
