Spring 2011 Hunt Test

Kelly Farms in Hugo, MN

With another successful spring hunt test under our belts, I would like to take a moment to thank

everyone who came out to judge, help, participate, and observe. Special thanks to Pete Forsberg, Joni

Liljidahl, Dick and Karin Greeman, Julie Thate, and Jon Zeeman. Without these guys this event would have been a bust. Please take a moment to thank them the next time you see them. I'm sure

that I missed a few names, and my sincere apologies to anyone I neglected to mention. This year’s event was a bit different than years past. With it becoming increasingly difficult each

year to secure judges and horses, the AKC allowed us to be guinea pigs for the experimental usage of four wheelers to judge off of. I believe the experiment was a huge success overall, and with a bit of

tweaking would be a very viable option for clubs with low entries, or limitations for horse usage on

certain grounds. We'll have to see where the AKC takes it from here. Because this was an AKC experiment, Senior Field Rep Tom Meyer was sent out to observe all three

days of our event. They couldn't have sent out a nicer guy, and since he was able to pass our strin-gent screening process, we put him to work each and every day! Many thanks to Tom for coming out

to play with us. By the way, this guy can shoot, and has an open invitation to come back any time. Thanks again everyone. See you all at the picnic!

Spring 2011 Horseback Trial

Crow-Hassan Park Reserve near Rogers, MN

For this year‟s Spring Field Trial we decided to go back to having a four day event instead of three,

over the Memorial Day weekend. The grounds were in good shape and had recovered nicely from

prairie burning a few weeks earlier.

This year we had a new trial Chairman, Kevin Jahr, who is known mainly for his Weimeraners, but

has also started to have success with Pointers and German Shorthaired Pointers. His addition to the

club and effort in stepping up to chair the trial is greatly appreciated. Chris Benskin handled the sec-

retary duties for this event for the first time after doing other club events in the past.

We were very fortunate to have such a diverse and esteemed group of people step up to judge this

event. All of the people in the judicial saddle brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to their

task at hand over this long weekend. Bruce Bryant came up from Iowa to judge the Open All-Age

and the Open Derby. Coming along on the trip was his brother Keith Bryant from Colorado and

nephew Chris Bryant from Nebraska. It was great meeting these guys and hope we can see them

again in the future. Phil Mathiowetz of Goodhue, MN took some time away from his job as a profes-

sional dog trainer to come and watch some dogs for a change instead of just handling them. Sue

Mueller, a long time participant with German Wirehaired Pointers and also a few German Short-

haired Pointers took some time to watch the juvenile stakes. Carl T Olson of Shorewood, MN was in

attendance to judge the Open Restricted Shooting Dog and the Open Puppy. He also brought along

his German Shorthaired Pointers to compete. Bjorn Peterson of Lino Lakes was assigned to watch

the Open Restricted Shooting Dog and the Amateur Shooting Dog stakes. Tim Zick from Edgerton,

WI was at our trial again this year and agreed to judge the Open and Amateur Shooting Dog stakes

while competing in the other stakes with his fine string of German Shorthaired Pointers.

We would also like to thank the other people involved in helping with the field trial. Bird planting

over all four days was mainly handled by Heather Gast. Others helping in bird planting were Dan

Erickson, Justin Martin, Clark Linn, Wes Lodes, and Bruce Mueller. It‟s a long thankless job, but

one that really gets noticed when not done properly. If I missed anyone I am sorry, but very grateful

for the help. Thanks to all of these folks for doing such a good job.

Dog wagon was staffed in the mornings by Chris Benskin and the afternoons by Kathy Erickson, An-

drea Linn, Matthew Linn, Mike Linn, Kevin Jahr, Chip Denham, and Dan Erickson. Thank you eve-

ryone for taking shifts in the wagon so I could prepare food and do paperwork.

Hot lunches and dinners were prepared on the grounds daily by Chris Benskin. The exception was on

Sunday night when we catered in a fantastic BBQ meal from Q-Fanatic BBQ in Champlin, MN.

Halfway through a delicious meal the crowd was demanding that we have them cater again next year.

Thank you Charlie Johnson and his staff for feeding this hungry bunch of field trialers with such

awesome food!!

We also want to thank all the participants that attended this event. Local professional trainers Greg

Dixon, Matt Eder, and Wes Lodes were in attendance and were joined by Art Armbrust of Gretna,

NE Bryan Long of Maryville, MO , and Jim West of Randolph, IA. Their entries were supplemented

by a large and strong contingent of Amateur trainers and handlers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa,

Illinois, North Carolina and Kansas.

We kicked off the event Friday morning at 7:00 A.M. with the start of the Open Limited Gun Dog.

This was a large stake with 47 entries and was very tightly contested. This stake ran all day Friday

and spilled over into Saturday. The judges were very impressed with the performances that were

given. The winner was Cobb‟s Golden Kernal, a Gordon Setter handled by Greg Dixon. The top 3

dogs were superb with about the next dozen knocking on the door for placements

The Open All-Age then followed on Saturday. 22 contenders came to the line for this stake. There

were a few dogs lost and a few more went birdless. When all was said and done GK‟s Ramblin

Kassey, a GSP female handled by Bryan Long was the winner. This win finished her AKC Field

Championship.

Sunday was the Amateur Gun Dog stake, a retrieving stake with the retrieves done at a local farm at the

end of the stake. Conditions were tough for this stake with very calm and dry conditions. After run-

ning 25 dogs the judges called back 3 dogs for the retrieving. 2 of the 3 failed to make the retrieve and

the judicial panel withheld 1st and 2nd places and awarding only a 3rd place.

Sunday afternoon was the running of the Open Derby, a stake with 11 starters. Winning with a very

strong performance was Hillfire‟s Free Rein Bella, a GSP female owned and handled by Wes Lodes.

Page 10: The Official Publication of the German Shorthaired …...2019/06/07  · South Dakota Hunting Dog Club Chancellor, SD Aug 27/28, 2011 None Posted. Winner’s Dog and Best of Winners

Monday morning we started with the Open Gun Dog but were soon interrupted by storms and heavy

rain. With conditions not being the best we had a few scratches and ended up running 21 dogs in

what turned out to be a very nice stake. After the retrieving callbacks were completed the judges

named the winner, Caprock‟s Pole Dancer a.k.a “Sugar” handled by Kevin Jahr. This was Sugar‟s

first broke stake win!

The last stake was the Open Puppy which was run late Monday afternoon. Temperatures were in the

mid-80‟s and humid. 10 starters came to the line and when placements were read the winner was High

Roll-N‟s You‟ve Been Tagged, a GSP male handled by Tim Zick.

I started the month of May at a trial on these same grounds getting snowed on and 4 weeks later it was

close to 90 and humid. You just have to love springtime in Minnesota!! We plan to be back again next

year over the Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, 2012 for another great trial.

June 10th was our annual Specialty Show and Obedience/Rally Trial.

The first Specialty Show started at 9 AM, Obedience at 10:45 Rally following Obediences. It was a long day with the Second Specialty Show starting after 4 PM

Our entries were down a bit this year but our Obedience and Rally entries were more than tripled from last year!

We had two dogs gain new titles in Rally and Obedience.

This could not have been such a success if it wasn't for our club members getting up at 4 AM to drive to Jordan.

Our specialty was inside again this year, thank goodness because it of coursed rained on and off all day long.

We had fresh ground coffee going all day long with real creamer, sugar and muffins. There were handlers trudg-ing across the fairgrounds

to get cups of coffee from our building.

The sweepstakes prizes were great. The sweeps people were fighting over the blankets that were prizes.

The prizes for Best of Breed, Best of Opp, Best of Winners were fantastic also.

Diane Felicetta drove out to ring steward at the obedience/rally trial and to bring the High In Trial prize basket.

The free lunch ran all day long, hot dogs, lemon bars, 2 different types of salads, chips, pop and water.

The raffle this year was great, it had a wonderful variety of items. Embroidered grooming aprons and training

bags. Treats, plants, stainless steel food dishes and water buckets. There was even a tree.

It was great to see Myrna Johnson again. She has been in Texas for a couple of years now escaping our Minne-

sota winters.

A huge THANK YOU to Aaron who took the entire day off to ring steward for both of the shows. And another GI-ANT THANKS to Team GSPCMN Donna Schauer, Julie Thate, Karin Greeman, Kitty Kiener, Lacy Bauer, Braden for

helping setup, Jackie and Erica Greeman for selling raffle tickets and my personal slave Erica Morris.
