The Ohio State University Medical Center’s Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is proud to offer our fifteenth annual conference. As a recognized teaching center, we will combine the academic excellence of an internationally distinguished faculty and state of the art technology to bring an exceptional educational opportunity to practicing general surgeons and other healthcare professionals. The goal of this course is to give attendees the opportunity for ongoing education in moving the bar as it related to MIS, an overview of services lines and disease specific programs as well as changes in future of medicine related to MIS, healthcare costs and surgeon training.
Needs Assessment: The field of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) continues to expand and grow. Surgeons and other healthcare professionals need to know what the future of healthcare will hold and how it will affect the way they practice and hospitals do business. A review of current advances in complex general surgery enable surgeons to translate better patient care as it relates to minimally invasive surgery, endoscopy, robotic surgery, and the role of services lines, the advantages of programs for digestive disease, hernia and metabolic surgery. Surgeons are finding that the ever changing economy is affecting the way they practice, teach and work. It is important for surgeons to understand these changes and how it will affect the care provided to the patients. Lecture and discussion will give attendees this opportunity. Course participants will be asked to complete a comprehensive evaluation on utilization and impact of key concepts presented in the course to help measure change in competence and performance involving the advances in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Target Audience
Practicing general surgeons and allied healthcare professionals who want to improve their current practice or review recent trends in minimally invasive surgery.
Objectives:
Completion of this course will enable participants to:1. Discuss where MIS is today in the United States and where opportunities for future
growth exist.2. Discuss the cost of surgical training and the role of MIS fellowships.3. Describe the role of simulation in surgical education.4. Explain and describe the role of the service line approach to care.5. Explore the role of advanced MIS procedures in a community setting and cost to
these procedures to patients and hospitals.6. Describe how surgical care may be affected by the Affordable Care Act.7. Explore the economic challenges hospitals face: balancing budgets, accountable
care organizations, fee for service to pay for quality.8. Describe and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of training surgeons as leaders.
