Art&Designprovidesopportunitiestodevelopabroadfoundationofcritical,practicalandtheoreticalskillsthatofferaholisticunderstandingofarangeofpracticesandcontextsinthevisualarts,craftsanddesignfields,culminatingingreaterspecialismand achievement.

Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%)

Determinedbythelearnerandteacher,assessedbytheteacherandexternallymoderated.Itconsistsoftwointegratedparts:

Amajorin-depthcritical,practicalandtheoreticalinvestigativeproject/portfolioandoutcome/sbasedonthemesandsubjectmatterthathavepersonalsignificance;

An extended written element of 1000 words minimum, which may contain images and texts and must clearly relate to practical and theoretical work using an appropriate working vocabulary and specialist terminology.

Practical/theoretical work and the written element are assessed together using the assessment objectives. Students are required to select, evaluate and present their work for assessment.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40%)

Part 1: Preparatory study period

The externally set assignment materials consist of a series of visual and written stimuli, which are presented to the student at the start of the preparatory study period. Students use the study period to plan and evidence their response to the stimulus.

Part 2: 15 hour period of sustained focus work

The resolution of students’ ideas from the preparatory work must be completed during these 15 hours and they must show how their planning relates to the outcome/s. The period of sustained focus work must be completed under supervised conditions.

Progression Routes

Students have the opportunity to further their education into College to complete a foundation course or attend University in a discipline of their choice. Students could also apply for an apprenticeship or job in the creative industries, including: Advertising, Architecture,Artandantiques,Crafts,Design,Designerfashion,FilmandVideo,InteractiveLeisureSoftware,Music,PerformingArts, Publishing, Software and Computer Services, Television and Radio.

WJEC Lightbox is an online resource that brings together contemporary art, artists & current teachingpracticeallofwhichfeeddirectlyintotheobjectivesoftheWJECArtandDesignprogramme.

European Trips: Students have the opportunity to visit European cities such as Barcelona, Paris and London to develop their cultural understanding.

Galleries: Throughout each academic year students visit galleries in Liverpool and London, attend the Birmingham Clothes Show and visit beaches and other environments to explore their questions.

Enrichment Opportunities

Year 12 and 13 are encouraged to visit University labs to complete titrations using grade A equipment. There is also access to Gas Chromatography equipment and Scanning Electron Microscopes. LJMU provide access to labs for basic titrations to be completed. ExternalNHSspeakersareinvitedtospeakaboutdiseasepreventionanddiseasecontrolinhospitalsettings.

Entryrequirementsaregrade6inGCSEBiologyor6-6inCombinedScienceanda6inGCSEMaths.ThecourseproviderisAQAandconsists of 8 topics of study which are assessed by papers 1 and 2. Practical work is teacher assessed via a series of 12 core practical activities and further tested within paper 3 which also draws upon knowledge and understanding from the full range of content.

Year 12 Duringthefirst-yearpupilsstudytopicsincludingbiologicalmolecules,cellstructure,cellsandtheimmunesystem,exchangeandtransportsystems,DNAandproteinsynthesis,diversityandclassification.Throughoutthefirstyearofstudypupilswillundertake6 of core practical experiments they are required to complete, including dissection. A decision will be made based upon the student as to whether the AS level exams are taken.

Year 13 Duringthesecondyearofstudy,pupilswillcovertopicssuchasphotosynthesisandrespiration,Homeostasisandnervousco-ordination, genetics, evolution and ecosystems alongside gene expression and gene technologies. Throughout the second year of study pupils complete the remaining 6 core practical experiments.

TheExtendedDiplomaisatwo-year,full-timecoursethatmeetsentryrequirementsinitsownrightforlearnerswhowanttoprogress to higher education courses in civil engineering areas before entering employment.

It supports learners who want to progress directly to employment in roles in civil engineering as technicians, or to a professional construction role and advanced/higher apprenticeships in civil engineering.

Construction Principles 120 Guided Learning HoursJob roles in the construction and built environment industry require the application of knowledge and understanding related to the design of structures and infrastructure, selection and use of construction materials, and the provision of human comfort in build-ings. Whether you want to become a site manager, designer, engineer or surveyor, you will apply the knowledge and skills to ensure thatmaterialsarefitforpurposeandthatspecifiedquantitiesareorderedandusedonaconstructionproject.

Inthisunit,youwilldeveloptheskillsneededtosolveavarietyofpracticalconstructionproblemsbyapplyingscientificknowledgeand carrying out mathematical and statistical techniques.

Construction Design 120 Guided Learning HoursAlmost all human activity takes place in and around buildings and structures that are, for example, places of shelter, work, worship, cultureandsport,andthesethingshaveastronginfluenceonourqualityoflife.Buildingsaredeceptivelycomplexandexpensivetobuildandmaintain,sotheirdesignrequirescarefulconsiderationtoensurethattheyarefitforpurposeandmeetuserrequire-ments. Creating buildings and structures is a unique process that requires input from a team of built environment professionals, who take into consideration a wide variety of factors to resolve problems and meet client requirements.

Inthisunit,youwilllearntheprinciplesandpracticeinvolvedinthedesignandconstructionoflow-riseandmedium-risebuildingsandstructures,andgainanunderstandingofhowdesignisinfluencedbyclientrequirementsandexternalconstraints.

Tendering and Estimating 120 Guided Learning HoursConstruction companies obtain work via the tendering and estimating process. An estimator uses the tender documents to arrive at an estimated cost of construction. The estimator then works with commercial managers to consider the potential commercial riskandcurrentworkload,inordertoarriveatatendersumthatisconsideredacorrectandappropriateoffer.Inthisunit,youwilllearn how to consider a project scenario, together with relevant tender documentation, in order to produce a commercial risk as-sessment for use in a tender settlement meeting.

Construction Technology 60 Guided Learning HoursTheconstructionindustryprovidesthepopulationoftheUK,andtheworld,withthebuiltenvironmentneededtosustainallas-pects of life as we know it. Today’s buildings can use combinations of modern and traditional techniques and materials in their constructionandthisunitwillgiveyouanunderstandingofthetechnologyusedinthedesignandconstructionoflow-risedomesticandcommercialbuildings.Inthisunit,youwillexaminevariousformsoflow-riseconstructionandconsiderthemostappropriateformsfordifferingsiteconditionsandclientrequirements.

Health and Safety in Construction 60 Guided Learning HoursHealth and safety in construction operations is essential so that workers can carry out practical activities in a safe environment that isfreefromhazardsandrisks.Safetystartsintheoffice,withplanningsafesystemsofwork,assessingtherisksinconstructionoperations and applying control measures to reduce the risks to an acceptable level. Companies aspire to achieve the target of zeroaccidentsintheworkplace,promotingtheirreputationassafeconstructors.Inthisunit,youwillexaminetheresponsibilitiesofemployeesandemployerswithregardtoUKlegislationandregulationsandtheproceduresusedtocontrolhazardsandrisksforconstruction operations across a range of activities.

Surveying in Construction 60 Guided Learning HoursThe surveying of land is concerned with the measurement of existing features of the natural and built environment and the pres-entation of data in a format suitable for architects and engineers to use when designing construction projects. It plays an important role in the early stages of the design process and links with the setting out phase of construction projects. In this unit, you will becomefamiliarwithbasicsurveyingtechniquesandwillcarryoutsurveyingtasksandpresentfieldworkdatainasuitableformat.

Site Engineering for Construction 60 Guided Learning HoursThe skills required for setting out construction and civil engineering works involves a high degree of accuracy. This is essential in meeting the tolerances of the elements that form the substructure and the superstructure so that the building, and its components, fitintopositioncorrectly.Forexample,thespecificationfortheinstallationofroadsisoftenintermsof+/−3mminlevel.Also,asasite engineer, you will need to be able to read dimensions from drawings provided by the designer and produce calculations to assist insettingoutthework.Buildingmoderncitylandscapesrequirestheabilitytocontroltheverticalityofmulti-storeybuildingstoahigh degree of accuracy from storey to storey.

Further Mathematics for Construction 60 Guided Learning HoursMany of the buildings and structures that we encounter in our daily lives are the result of projects that civil engineers and building servicesengineershaveworkedon.Theyusearangeofmathematicaltechniquesandformulaetofindoutimportantphysicalprop-ertiesofthebuildingsandstructures.Thesecouldincludefindingthecentreofgravityofanirregularshaped,precastcladdingunitso that it can be safely lifted, using arithmetic or trigonometric techniques to determine areas of sites, or calculating the root mean square value of an alternating electric current to make sure the supply is suitable. In this unit, you will investigate relevant aspects of pure mathematics and explore how you can solve complex practical problems.

They will also be required to write about drama and to develop their analysis skills. The course will involve taking part in drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights. Geography is highly valued by Universities as an A Level choice. The Russell Group re-port, published in 2011, names Geography as one of the eight facilitating subjects. Students studying Advanced Mathematics follow the AQA (7357) course. The course structure consists of compulsory elements of pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics with an option to sit AS mathematics at the end of year 12 before continuing on with furtherstudyforAdvancedLevelinyear13.Thereisnocourseworkelementwiththisparticularspecification.Thereareregularassessments to check progress, with feedback given and students know their current and predicted grades at all times. Year 12Students begin to study topics including electric circuits, mechanics and nuclear physics. Psychology appeals to a wide range of students, regardless of whether they have studied it previously. It can lead to careers in a variety of areas such as Clinical, Educational, Forensic/Criminology, Business, Occupational and Health & Social, as well as medical. Other alternative areas of progression are Police, Counselling, Armed Forces and Sport.

Visits to Chester Zoo, to observe behavioural development of animals and examines how these studies can be applied to human behaviour. ThisqualificationisintendedasanAppliedGeneralqualificationequivalentinsizetooneALevel.ItisdesignedforstudentswhoareinterestedinanintroductiontothestudyofcreatingITsystemstomanageandshareinformationalongsideotherfieldsofstudy,with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Students will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information. ThisvocationalqualificationhasprovedtobeapopularoptionforourSixthFormstudents,manyofwhomhavegoneontostudyat University, it has also helped students to gain employment with IT companies, such as Sony as well as within the IT department at The Oldershaw Academy itself! Year 12Students study Information Technology Systems in preparation for a formal assessment in the summer term. Alongside this, stu-dents will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in database software in order to complete the supervised online assess-ment, which will also be completed in the summer term.

Year 13Students will research how businesses use social media in order to promote products/services, before planning and implementing their own social media campaign for business. Alongside this, students will study real world examples of websites used for com-merceanddevelopskillsneededtoplanandimplementtheirownwebsiteforafictionalbusiness.

There are 4 units to complete which are assessed and are as follows:

ThiscoursegivesstudentsspecialistknowledgeandskillsinSport.ThiscourseisgradedasaPass,MeritorDistinction.Thequalifi-cation is recognised by UCAS, Universities and Employers as the equivalent to one A Level. There are 3 Mandatory Units and 1 Optional Unit. All optional units are internally set and assessed by the centre, a sample of which is moderated externally. Work can be submitted by way of assignments, portfolios, power point presentations and investigative research. Year 12Students will study mandatory units 1 and 2 below with exams taking place in January and June.

1.Anatomy&Physiology-Studentswilllookatthestructureandfunctionofthemusculo-skeletalcardio-respiratorysystemsandtheenergysystemsandhowtheyareallaffectedbyexerciseandtraining.Thisunitwillbeassessedexternallyandwillbeintheform of a written examination – 1.5 hours (90 marks)

2.FitnessTraining&ProgrammingforHealth,Sport&Well-Being-Studentswillstudyhealthscreeningandassesslifestyles,in-terpretingdatacollected.Theywillunderstandthedifferentmethodsoffitnesstrainingandbeabletoplanandreviewafitnesstraining programme. This unit is assessed externally by way of a written, supervised case study. (60 marks)

Year 13Studentswillstudythefinalmandatoryunittogetherwithoneoftheoptionalunits.Bothwillbeassessedbywayofassignments.

ProfessionalDevelopmentintheSportsIndustry(Mandatory)-Studentswillreviewdifferentcareerpathwaysinthesportsindus-try. They will look at the recruitment and selection process within the sports industry and develop their own possible career devel-opment plan using a skills audit. This unit is assessed internally by way of an assignment.

There is 1 Optional Unit:

1.SportsLeadership-Studentswilllookattheroles,qualities,characteristicsofagoodleadertogetherwithaneffectivestyleofleadership. They will also explore how psychological factors can link to leadership.

2.ApplicationofFitnessTesting-Studentsexplorethereasoningandprinciplesbehindfitnesstesting,differenttestsfordifferenttypesoffitnessandhowtoevaluateandfeedbacktoclients.

3.SportsPsychology-Studentsconsiderpersonality,motivationandpressurewithregardstoperformanceandalsotheimpactofgroup dynamics on performance. Students explore psychological skills training and performance.

4.PracticalSportsPerformance-StudentstakealookatNationalGoverningbodyrules/lawsandregulationsforselectedsportscompetitions.Theyexamineanddeveloptheirownskills,techniquesandtacticsrequiredtoperforminselectedsportsandreflecton their own practical performance using selected assessment methods.
