Classes and Other Educational Offerings Classes, Lectures, Workshops Special Events, Excursions, and Expeditions

OLLI classes typically run for eight weeks in the Spring and Fall terms and six weeks in the

Winter and Summer terms. Each class is two hours long, with a short break in the middle. The

fee for each class is $50.

The SAGE lecture series offers a series of eight weekly lectures on Tuesday mornings in the

Spring and Fall terms.

The fee for each of the two 8-week SAGE series is $50; walk-in seats for individual lectures are

generally available for $10.

OLLI workshops take place mostly on Saturday in the fall and spring and Friday in the winter

and summer and may consist of one to three sessions. The fees vary for the workshops.

Special events are offered from time to time, lasting from one to three days. These may in-

clude the following: “Wrinkle in Time,” which explores a particular era in our history; “One

Book-One Community,” which centers on discussion of a single book and its impact.

Excursions take OLLI members on day trips to fascinating destinations such as museums, art-

ists’ workshops, and so on. Fees vary according to destination.

Expeditons are offered periodically to overseas destinations. The cost depends on the destina-

tion and the length of the trip.

Registration is required for all of the above events.

Scholarships

OLLI provides scholarships for those members who have difficulty paying for classes, SAGE

lectures, or workshops. Members may talk confidentially with a staff member. Scholarships are

limited to one per person per term.

Much of the scholarship monies come from fund-raisers organized and executed by OLLI

members.

Free Offerings

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) provide OLLI members a chance to meet and explore various

topics and activities outside the instructional curriculum. They range from book clubs to walk-

ing and bicycling groups to explorers of food and wine. You’ll find a complete list in each cata-

log and on the OLLI website here: http://usm.maine.edu/olli/olli-special-interest-groups .

Brown Bag Events include free lunchtime workshops for current or aspiring OLLI instructors,

and mini-lectures on various topics.

Writers’ Showcase presents readings from OLLI writers.

Registration for Classes and Other Events Registration for Classes, Workshops, Etc.

Registration—for classes, workshops, SAGE, excursions, and some special events—is on a

first-come, first-served basis. Detailed instructions for registering online are included in every

course catalog and on the OLLI website. If you need help registering online, the OLLI Board is

available to help you register in the computer lab at the Wishcamper Center on the day online

registration opens.

Dates and times for online registration are included in the course catalogs and by e-mail, as

well as the date for mail-in, drop-off, and phone registrations. Online registration is available

first and is recommended for a better chance of getting into the classes of your choice before

they are filled. Some classes fill quickly the first day of online registration.

OLLI Courtesies OLLI Nametags

If you don’t already have one, or need a replacement, the OLLI office can provide a nametag

for you. Please be sure to wear it to every class and OLLI function as a courtesy to your instruc-

tors and OLLI members.

Scent Policy

As a courtesy to students with allergies, please avoid using scented products such as co-

lognes and aftershaves, fragrances and perfumes, or scented lotions and creams while attending

OLLI classes and activities.

The Arts at OLLI OLLI Reflections Journal

In the fall of each year OLLI publishes an art and literature journal consisting entirely of

submissions by OLLI members. A volunteer editor and group of volunteers choose among the

many creative works of poetry, prose, and visual art. Submissions are blind: the committee does

not know who submitted a work until it has been selected.

The submission form and instructions are available here:

http://usm.maine.edu/olli/olli-reflections-magazine

OLLI Art Wall

Art and photography are displayed on the wall of the corridor leading to the OLLI office.

This revolving display contains work by OLLI members and is curated by an art committee.

Submission information is posted on the Art Wall.

End-of-Term Festivities

At the end of the Spring and Fall terms, OLLI members from classes and Special Interest

Groups offer an art exhibit and performances of music, drama, and dance.

Catalogs

OLLI at USM produces four course catalogs, one for each term. In addition to classes, each

catalog contains much additional information. Catalogs are posted to the OLLI at USM website

and announced via e-mail. Current OLLI members also receive a paper copy in the mail.

The twice-yearly SAGE brochure is also posted online and mailed to current OLLI members.

The online course catalog and SAGE brochure can be found here:

you have registered for this service you will receive a text message on your cell phone alerting you to the emergen-

cy and directing you to the USM website or Emergency Phone line recording for updated and more thorough infor-

mation upon availability.

NICE TO KNOW

OLLI’s Mission Statement; About OLLI OLLI’s Mission Statement

OLLI at USM is committed to providing a wide variety of stimulating courses, lectures,

workshops and complementary activities for its members in a creative and inclusive learning

community.

About OLLI at USM

OLLI started as Senior College in 1997 at the University of Southern Maine. It began with a

simple vision: to provide a stimulating program for older learners.

A generous endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation in 2000 encouraged expanded

programming opportunities. In recognition of the Osher Foundation’s gift, the organization’s

name was changed to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, or OLLI.

In 2004 the Osher Foundation created the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute National Re-

source Center, a coordinating office for its 120 OLLIs around the country. The Center is not a

governance body, but rather a center for dissemination of best practice models. Originally

housed at USM, the Resource Center is now located at Northwestern University.

Each Osher Institute reflects the culture of its own university and its learning community.

The National Resource Center exists to facilitate the exchange of opinions, solutions, and expe-

riences among institutes throughout the country.

In 2007 OLLI at USM achieved an active membership of 1000 for the first time.

In the summer of 2008, OLLI moved into its new home in the Wishcamper Center at USM,

allowing the program to expand from Fridays-only to five days a week (and since then to Satur-

day workshops and weekend events). Thanks to dedicated community and university leaders

and volunteers, our OLLI at USM has grown into one of America’s fastest-growing and leading

programs in lifelong learning, with over 2000 active members.

Volunteering at OLLI

“OLLI runs on volunteers” is the slogan at the bottom of each page of the Newsletter. Except

for the paid office staff, all committees, classes, and workshops are led by volunteers.

There are many other volunteer opportunities at OLLI. After you familiarize yourself with the

organization you may want to consider volunteering for a specific sub-committee. Talk with

others who volunteer. Also, you can ask at the OLLI office for contact information for the

chairs of the various committees. Remember: “OLLI runs on volunteers!”

What Is Expected of Volunteers

Promptness: Always show up on time.

Responsibility: Attend meetings and follow through with things you volunteer to do.

Initiative: OLLI is always looking for new ideas. Share your ideas with committee chairs or

Board members, and be willing to get involved if your idea is given a green light.

What Volunteers Can Expect

Clear and professional communication from your leader.

Appreciation for your time and effort.

Training as necessary.

If you feel there are deficiencies in any area, you should talk with a Board member or OLLI

staff member.

Becoming an OLLI Instructor

OLLI instructors are not only retired teachers (though some are), but people from all walks

of life who have a passion for a particular discipline, subject matter, skill, hobby, and so on, and

who want to share it with others.

You can call or e-mail the OLLI office for a course proposal form. If you have questions,

please call the OLLI office (780-4406). OLLI staff will talk with you and/or connect you with

the Education Committee Chair. The submission deadline for the each term is announced via an

e-mail message.

All course proposal forms are submitted electronically. The OLLI website has a comprehen-

sive section for OLLI faculty, including teaching tips and techniques, and how to submit a

course proposal, and course proposal forms:
