The Ancient
Olympic Games
The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece In the ancient times, every four years in the summer period, a major event, which lasted seven days, was held in Olympia, a city in Ancient Greece. Officially established as a celebration at the beginning of the 9th century BC with a law, it included religious rituals and athletic games.
With the same law, the area of Olympia
was considered a sacred place while a
truce was initiated: during the
Olympics, all the conflicts among the
ancient Greek cities-states stopped.
The first written testimonies with the names of winners, date back from the year 776 BC. There were specific preparations for the event.
The first Olympic
Torch Relay in the 16th O
lympic Games in 1928
in Athens.
Religious rituals were held at the
beginning and the end of the games.
An important notice is that except the
priestesses, women were not allowed to
watch the games and mothers and sisters
of the athletes stayed at the opposite side
of the nearby river. A general view of
Ancient Olympia as it is today.
The Modern
Olympic Games
Do you know him?
Pierre de Coubertin
He is best known as
the founder of the
International Olympic
Committee.
Coubertin was a French aristocrat born
on January 1,1863. After examining the
education of the German, British, and
American children, Coubertin decided
that it was exercise, more specifically
sports, that made a well-rounded and
vigorous person.
At an international congress on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris, Coubertin proposed a revival of the ancient Olympic Games. The congress led to the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), of which de Coubertin became the general secretary. It was also decided that the first of these IOC-organised Olympics would take place in Athens, Greece and that they would be held every four years.
Despite the initial success, the Olympic Movement faced hard times, as the 1900 and 1904 Games were both swallowed by World's Fairs, and received little attention.
