RETIRING FACULTY ELECTED TO EMERITUS STATUSSUSAN A. BASOW, Charles A. Dana Professor of Psychology, has been a member of the faculty for 43 years.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Douglass College, Rutgers University, in 1968, and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Brandeis University in 1970 and 1973, respectively. She joined the faculty as assistant professor in 1977 and was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and to full professor in 1991. She was named Dana Professor in 1996. She is licensed for the private practice of psychology in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Basow has taught a broad range of courses, many drawing upon her expertise in clinical and counseling psychology. She developed and taught one of the College’s first gender studies-focused courses, Psychology of Gender. She was coordinator of study programs at Universidad Veritas in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Saint Louis University, Madrid.

Basow co-founded the Professional Women of Lafayette, the first group for women faculty at the College. The organization’s support activities eventually morphed into a study group in women’s studies and then became a curricular force, driving forward the idea of a women’s studies program for which she served as chair from 1986 until 1993.

An activist for gender and LGBTQ equity and promoter of inclusivity, she has authored many scholarly articles and book chapters and earned national recognition for her writing on gender issues, including classroom interactions, relational and physical aggression, and body perception. She is the recipient of Lafayette’s Marquis Distinguished Teaching Award; Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Award, for superior teaching and scholarly contributions to a discipline; Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Faculty Lecture Award, in recognition of excellence in teaching and scholarship; and Joseph Johnson Hardy Memorial Fund Award.

Basow has served as head and assistant head of her department and on many search committees and committees of the faculty, including the committees on Governance, which she chaired, Faculty Academic Policy, Faculty Compensation, and Appeals and Grievance. She has served on the Women’s and Gender Studies Advisory Committee since 2009.

She has held leadership positions in the American Psychology Association’s Society for the Psychology of Women and received its Heritage Award for Distinguished Teaching. Basow has served as consulting editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly and Sex Roles and member of the editorial board of Greenwood Publishing Group’s Women’s Psychology series.

PATRICIA A. DONAHUE, professor of English, has been a member of the faculty for 35 years.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Redlands in 1974 and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of California, Irvine, in 1976 and 1981, respectively. She joined the faculty as assistant professor in 1985 and was promoted to associate professor in 1992 and to full professor in 2004.

Among the courses she has taught are Psychoanalysis and Literature; Detective Stories, Thrillers, and Serial Killers: Tradition and Innovation; Trapped in a Golden (C)age: Representations of Women in the English Renaissance; and Language, Rhetoric, and Power. She has earned recognition

as an expert in matters of assessment and the use of student evaluation data.

The English department’s first writing specialist, Donahue founded the Lafayette’s nationally recognized College Writing Program and served many years as its director. She is one of six faculty members who helped design and teach the initial iteration of Lafayette’s First-Year Seminar. She played key roles in establishing the Center for the Integration of Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship and, more recently, in the College’s reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Donahue’s scholarship has focused on reading theories, disciplinary and pedagogical histories, and the construction of difficulty. She is co-author of The Elements (and Pleasures) of Difficulty and co-editor of Reclaiming Pedagogy: The Rhetoric of the Classroom and Reading the Archives of Composition. She was chosen as a Carnegie Scholar in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

She is the recipient of the College’s Marquis Distinguished Teaching Award; Carl R. and Ingeborg Beidleman Research Award, recognizing excellence in applied research or scholarship; and Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award, for excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to campus life.

Donahue has served as department head and associate head and on departmental committees and elected committees of the faculty, including the committees on Governance, Curriculum and Educational Policy, Teaching and Learning, and Student Appeals.

She has served as editor of the journal READER, published at Lafayette; a member of the editorial board of The WAC Journal (Writing Across the Curriculum); reviewer for journals and conferences, including College English, Pedagogy, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication; and elected delegate for the Modern Language Association.

G. LYLE HOFFMAN, professor of physics, has been a member of the faculty for 37 years.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1974 and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Cornell University in 1980 and 1983, respectively. He joined the faculty in 1983 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1989 and to full professor in 1997.

He has shared his passion for physics and astronomy in a wide range of courses for non-science students and physics majors, including general physics, accelerated physics, astronomy and astrophysics, mechanics and thermodynamics, and quantum theory. He developed and taught the First-Year Seminar Uses and Abuses of Science in Science Fiction. Hoffman has taken formal piano instruction to enhance his teaching of a course in the physics of music.

Hoffman’s scholarship focuses on extragalactic radio astronomy. His research has been in the study of galaxies, specifically using some of the largest radio telescopes in the world to observe the hydrogen content of galaxies for such purposes as surveying the local universe for low-mass galaxies that might otherwise be missed. He has been actively involved with the Arecibo Legacy Fast

ALFA L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) consortium, a large, international collaborative project focused on data gathered at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

The author of dozens of papers, Hoffman has involved more than 30 students in his research. He is the recipient of the College’s Mary Louise Van Artsdalen Prize for outstanding scholarly achievement.

In addition to serving as department head, Hoffman has served on a variety of appointed and elected committees, including the Library Advisory Committee, which he chaired, and Academic Research Committee. He also has served on many faculty search committees and has been a regular reviewer of journal articles, textbook manuscripts, and grant proposals.

MARGARETE LAMB-FAFFELBERGER, professor of foreign languages and literatures, has been a member of the faculty for 28 years.

She received a Bachelor of Education degree in primary education from the University of Pedagogy, Vienna, in 1977 and a Bachelor of Education degree in secondary education from the University of Pedagogy, Baden, in 1978. She received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Illinois in 1981 and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Rice University in 1991. Lamb-Faffelberger joined the faculty in 1992 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and to full professor in 2006.

An award-winning teacher of German language and culture, scholar of Austrian literature and film, and leader in digitally mediated language pedagogies, she has transformed German studies at Lafayette into an internationally recognized program. She has established strong relationships with German-speaking scholars, writers, and artists as well as representatives in the Austrian Embassy, and brought dozens of scholars to Lafayette to share their insights and expertise.

Lamb-Faffelberger is founding director of the Max Kade “eco-system,” including a center for German and Austrian cultural studies and the Max Kade Haus, home to visiting artists and scholars. Through her affiliation with the Max Kade Foundation, she played a key role in securing scholarship monies for Lafayette engineering students studying in Germany.

She helped develop and taught a study program in Bonn for engineering students and directed summer study in Germany and interim-session courses abroad, most recently in South Africa.

She is the recipient of Lafayette’s Delta Upsilon Distinguished Mentoring and Teaching Award; Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Faculty Lecture Award, in recognition of excellence in teaching and scholarship; and Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to campus life. She also received the Aaron O. Hoff Award for her work as adviser to the International Students Association.

An expert on the work of Nobel Laureate Elfriede Jelinek, Lamb-Faffelberger has served as general editor of the Austrian Culture Series published by Peter Lang and as co-editor of the Women in German Yearbook.

She served as head of her department, member of the advisory committee that helped develop Lafayette’s program in film and media studies, and member of various other committees. For many years she was adviser to Delta Phi Gamma honorary society.

CHARLES F. NUTAITIS, associate professor of chemistry, has been a member of the faculty for 33 years.

Nutaitis received a Bachelor of Science degree from Kings College in 1980 and Doctor of Philosophy degree in organic chemistry from Dartmouth College in 1985. He joined the faculty as assistant professor in 1987, after serving as a research associate at Dartmouth and the University of Virginia. He was promoted to associate professor in 1993.

He has been a challenging instructor who commonly has taught introductory to advanced organic chemistry courses. As a staunch defender of no more than four bonds to carbon, his research in the area of organic synthesis has resulted in at least 22 Lafayette-based publications, almost all with student coauthors. He also has mentored students in independent studies.

Nutaitis served as the chemistry department’s safety officer for 29 years. He has been a member of several appointed and elected committees, including the Academic Research Committee and Academic Progress Committee. He also has served on several faculty and staff search committees.

Nutaitis’ professional affiliations include the Organic Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society, International Society of Heterocyclic Chemists, and Middle Atlantic Association of Liberal Arts Chemistry Teachers. A member of the editorial board of Arkivoc, a free global online journal of organic chemistry, he has served as a referee for scholarly journals.

LEE UPTON, Francis A. March Professor of English and Writer in Residence, has been a member of the faculty for 33 years.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1978; Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1981; and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Binghamton University in 1986.

Upton came to Lafayette in 1986 for one-year term as visiting assistant professor. She joined the faculty as assistant professor in 1988 and was promoted to associate professor in 1992 and to full professor in 1998, when she was named Writer in Residence. She was appointed March Professor in 2015.

Upton has taught many courses on writing fiction, humor, poetry, and nonfiction and on literary women and the modern British novel. She developed and taught First-Year Seminars Literary Questions and Wild Imaginings. She organized creative writing and poetry reading events and competitions on campus.

Upton is the recipient of Lafayette’s Marquis Distinguished Teaching Award; Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Faculty Lecture Award, for excellence in teaching and scholarship; Mary Louise Van Artsdalen Prize, for outstanding scholarly achievement; and Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Award, for superior teaching and scholarly contribution to her discipline.

A prolific, award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and literary criticism, she has authored more than a dozen books, several collections of poetry, an award-winning novella, dozens of short stories, and more than 70 articles and essays. She is the recipient of many literary awards, including the Open Poetry Award (Cleveland State University Poetry Center), Miami University Novella Award, Pushcart Prize, and BOA Short Fiction Prize.

She served as a contributing editor of annual editions of The Pushcart Prize, as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, and as a judge for a number of writing contests. She also was a manuscript reviewer for prestigious presses and highly regarded journals.

Among other service to the College, she served on two elected committees of the faculty, the committees on Promotion, Tenure, and Review, which she chaired, and Faculty Academic Policy.

ROBERT I. WEINER, Thomas Roy and Lura Forrest Jones Professor of History, has been a member of the faculty for 51 years.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University in 1965, and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Rutgers University in 1967 and 1973, respectively. He received a Hebrew teaching certificate from Gratz Hebrew College in 1963.

Weiner joined the faculty as assistant professor in 1969 and was promoted to associate professor in 1975 and to full professor in 1989. He was named Jones Professor in 2001. He has served as Lafayette’s Jewish chaplain since 1969.

His teaching areas include European history, Jewish history, French history, and the Holocaust, among others. He taught more than 20 courses in Austria, Egypt, France, Germany, Israel, and other countries and led semester-long programs in Dijon, France.

He created a series of 36 lectures titled The Long Nineteenth Century: European History 1798 to 1917 for The Teaching Company. He is co-author of An Uncertain Future:

Voices of a French Jewish Community, 1940-2012, an oral history of the Jews of Dijon. He has built a YouTube following, where his lectures have generated about 150,000 views. The most popular of these, on the origins of World War II, has been watched more than 115,000 times.

Weiner has played a key role in the development of the College’s Hillel Society, as its director and as Jewish chaplain. He and his wife established the Bob and Sandy Weiner Jewish Life Gift Fund. He has been a key figure in raising more than $2 million for an endowed chair to support Jewish studies and an endowment to support Hillel and Jewish life at Lafayette.

Weiner is the recipient of Lafayette’s Marquis Distinguished Teaching Award; James E. Lennertz Prize for Exceptional Teaching and Mentoring; Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for excellence in teaching and outstanding contributions to campus life; and Joseph Johnson Hardy Memorial Fund Award. A seven-time recipient of the Student Government Superior Teaching Award, he also has received the Student Government Faculty Adviser Award, John T. McCartney Excellence in Diversity Education Award, Dean of Studies Faculty Recognition Award, and the Alumni Association’s Daniel l. Golden ’34 Faculty Service Award. The Weiner Interfaith Award was established in his honor.

He served as department head and on a number of appointed and elected committees, including the faculty committees on Diversity and Retirement and advisory committees for the Jewish Studies and International Affairs programs.

RETIRING TRUSTEE ELECTED TO EMERITA STATUSNANCY J. KUENSTNER, member of the Class of 1975, has been a trustee since 2000.

She was secretary of the board, and a member of the Executive Committee and Steering Committee, from 2010 to 2018. During this time she also was a member of the Committee on Compensation.

Kuenstner most recently chaired the board’s Committee on Investments and was a member of the Executive Committee. She also chaired the investment committee from 2002 to 2008. She was a member of the committee from 2000 to 2010, from 2011 to 2015, and from 2018 to 2020.

She was a member of the Committee on Financial Policy from 2003 to 2010 and from 2018 to 2020.

Kuenstner was a member of the Presidential Search Committee whose efforts culminated in the election of Alison R. Byerly as Lafayette’s 17th president. She served on the board’s External Affairs Committee from 2000 to 2003 and on the Committee on Trustees and Governance from 2015 to 2018.

Before becoming a trustee, Kuenstner served on the Lafayette Leadership Council from 1993 to 1999 and chaired the group in 1998-99.

Kuenstner, a Spanish major at Lafayette, holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of North Carolina. A partner in SaddleShoe Partners, New York, she has more than 30 years’ experience in banking and finance. From 2001 through 2008, she was president, chief executive officer, and a director of The Law Debenture Trust Company of New York.

From 1977 through 1986 she was vice president of Chemical Bank’s Latin American Division. She joined Citigroup as vice president from 1987 through 1991 and as managing director of emerging markets fixed-income sales from 1991 through 1998. Among her responsibilities in these roles, she managed the global sales force and established the firm’s security sales branch in Miami. From 1998 through 2001, she was director of marketing and business development at Compass Group LLC.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERTEMPLE GRANDIN is a renowned animal expert and advocate for autistic people.

A professor of animal science and designer of livestock-handling facilities, she is a champion of farm-animal welfare whose designs have transformed the industry and are used worldwide. She conducts research, teaches, and consults internationally on autism and animal behavior and handling.

Diagnosed at age two with autism spectrum disorder, she went on to apply insights gained from her experience to conceptualize equipment that reduced animals’ stress during the livestock-handling process. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology, from Franklin Pierce College in 1970 and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in animal science from Arizona State University and the University of Illinois in 1975 and 1989, respectively.

Grandin has taught animal science at Colorado State University since 1990. She is author of a dozen books and hundreds of articles on autism, livestock handling,

environmental enrichment, and animal safety, among other topics. Two books, Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human, were New York Times bestsellers.

Grandin was profiled by Oliver Sacks in his book An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales. She is the subject of the 2006 BBC documentary film The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow and the 2010 HBO movie Temple Grandin, which won seven Emmys and a Golden Globe Award.

Grandin was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017 and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018. Among many other honors, she also was named to Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2010; was awarded Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Double Helix Medal, recognizing “esteemed individuals who boldly participate in the fight to find cures for the diseases that plague us;” and was honored by the World Organization for Animal Health for services to the world veterinary community.

GEORGE WHARTON PEPPER PRIZE WINNERJOSLYN BRODFUEHRER was selected by students and members of the faculty and administration as the recipient of the George Wharton Pepper Prize, awarded annually to the senior “who most closely represents the Lafayette ideal.”

She is graduating after three years with a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude with majors in international affairs and government & law and minor in Spanish. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in politics and international studies at Cambridge University.

“Lafayette is a unique place that lets you do so many things,” Brodfuehrer says. “I created my persona around three different platforms: athletics, academics, and community service. I wanted to make my mark on as many communities as I could.”

Co-valedictorian of the Class of 2020, Brodfuehrer is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Delta Pi academic honorary societies. As an EXCEL Scholar, she assisted Ilan Peleg, Dana Professor of Government and Law, in research on Benjamin Netanyahu

and his influence on Likud Party leadership and Israeli state policy.

A varsity lacrosse player, she was named to the Lafayette Athletics Gold Medal Academic Honor Roll and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll every semester and served as a tutor in Spanish for teammates.

She was an active participant in community service, included Athletes C.A.R.E., lacrosse clinics, tutoring and mentoring programs for children and adults, and volunteering in school classrooms, for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and for Toys for Tots.

With the help of Peleg, Brodfuehrer served a 10-week summer internship with the Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in San José, Costa Rica.

“It was, hands down, the best experience of my life,” she says. “It made me recognize that I’m a global citizen.”

The experience, Brodfuehrer says, solidified her desire to pursue a career in international affairs, possibly with the Central Intelligence Agency, after graduate school.
