If you cannotphysically join us for the procession, please feel free toenter the sanctuary for a time of quiet meditation beforethe service.

Worship in Holy WeekJoin us on Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday(April 10, 11 & 12) in the church at 6pm and celebratethe Holy Eucharist.

Maundy ThursdayThe liturgies for Maundy Thursday and Good Fridayare unique and highly symbolic; each will be celebratedonly once, offering a sense of the “real time” of the LastSupper and the Crucifixion — Christ’s Passion. HolyEucharist and The Stripping of the Altar will be heldin the church on Thursday, April 13, at 6pm. Led by ourCanterburians, a Vigil with foot-washing will be heldat 8pm in St. Mary’s Chapel. Parishioners as well as collegestudents are welcome.

Good FridayThe Hours of Good Friday will be held in the church fromnoon until 3pm on Friday, April 14. The service consistsof half-hour segments with hymns, readings, meditations, prayer and silence which commemorate the hours Jesusspent on the cross. Congregants are invited for the entireservice or for single or multiple movements. There willbe an organ interlude at the end of each, where worshipersmay come and go.

The Stations of the Cross will be markedbeginning at 3pm as a large cross is carried from Brutonthrough the college campus to the Catholic CampusMinistry building (old St. Bede’s on Richmond Road).

We hope you will attend Good Friday Liturgy at6pm in the church as the finality of the Crucifixion setsin. Christ has died, and the world holds its breath.

Holy SaturdayThe Great Vigil of Easter begins in the churchyard with“The Lighting of the New Fire of Easter” on Saturday,April 15, at 9pm and then continues in the church. Thisis the most important celebration of the entire year — theone from which all others either take their meaning or towhich all others look forward.

Proceeding from darkness to light, from silence toalleluia, it is the symbolic drama-tization of the story ofGod’s action on our behalf. It is the Christian Passover, for it celebrates the passing from death to life, from sinto grace. The story of the Exodus is central to the Liturgyof the Word; Baptism is the means of the full realizationof redemption; Holy Communion is the promise of theglory that shall be ours with our Risen Lord. This serviceincludes incense.

“When we honestly ask ourselves whichpersons in our lives mean the most to us, we

often find that it is those who, instead ofgiving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosenrather to share our pain and touch our wounds

with a warm and tender hand. The friend whocan be silent with us in a moment of despair

or confusion, who can stay with us in an hourof grief and bereavement,

who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, nothealing and face with us the reality of our

powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”Henri J. M. Nouwen

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.Where there is hatred, let us sow love;Where there is injury, pardon;Where there is discord, union;Where there is doubt, faith;Where there is despair, hope;Where there is darkness, light;Where there is sadness, joy.Grant that we may not so much seekto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we arepardoned, and it is in dying that we areborn to eternal l i fe.Amen.

In addition to the beautiful seat cushion whichSally Riley has needlepointed, there are threemore covers which are being stitched by Brutonparishioners Grace Martien, Barbie Siegel andToni Webb.

Kathy Mullins is leading a campaign withinthe Altar Guild to raise the funds needed to coverthe cost of one of these seat covers. The costof each needlepoint seat is $900. This amountcovers the cost of the design, painting of thecanvas, wool for stitching as well as installationof the completed needlepoint cover. Anyone canmake a donation in honor, memory orthanksgiving for the work of past and currentAltar Guild members.

As Women GoAgnes Serena

Women of Bruton have been on a major Lenten"go" of late! Some chose to "rough it outtogether" during the overnight retreat atChanco. Some chose to be nourished at theECW Silent Lenten Luncheon in Lewis Hallrecently. Both occasions were opportunities forinsight, fellowship and laughter!

Neither would have occurred without thecaring, thoughtful and inspired expertise of theReverends Jan Brown and Lauren McDonald! TheWomen's Roundtable, the ECW and all whoattended thank you, Jan and Lauren, forproviding these moments of Lent to "ComeAway and Pray."

On Saturday, February 25, fifteen Canterburians joined volunteers from Catholic Campus Ministry, BaptistCollegiate Ministries, and several other groups around Williamsburg to host KIDS’ Night, which is run by theOne Child Center for Autism here in Williamsburg. KIDS’ Night offers respite care for families with autisticchildren. From 4:30-9:30pm, we played games and looked after these remarkable children.

EfM Open HouseAlta Cassady

Parishioners interested in learning more about theEducation for Ministry (EfM) program are invited toattend an Open House on Sunday, April 30, in the

Coffee, Tea & Thee Room in the Parish Housebeginning at 2:30pm. After a brief presentation on

the program, participants in this year’s class willbe available to answer questions.

EfM prepares participants for the ministry towhich each is called. It is that vocation for which

we pray at the conclusion of the Eucharist, “ Andnow, Father, send us out to do the work you have

given us to do, to love and serve you as faithfulwitnesses of Christ our Lord.”

EfM provides lay persons with a theologicaleducation which supports their faith and also teachesthem to express that faith in day-to-day events. Theprogram develops an informed and knowledgeable laityto face a complex and often confusing world.

“All four years of EfM have been a great experiencefor me,” states John Meeks. “ EfM has taught me aboutthe Bible, church history and theology in a way that Ican apply to my practice of faith and my life.”

Meeks adds, “I look forward to conversations withmy colleagues and learning from them. Four yearshas been a big commitment of time and effort, but Iwill miss EfM very much when I graduate this spring.”

The current curriculum calls for a year-long studyof each of four subjects: the Hebrew Bible, the NewTestament, Church History, and Theology, Ethics andInterfaith Encounter. Participants are only asked tomake a one year commitment at the beginning of thestudy, which begins in mid- September and concludesin mid-June at Bruton Parish.

EfM has evolved since it was first developed in1975 by the School of Theology at Sewanee. Today, itis an international program with participants in tencountries and ninety-three of the one hundred Episcopaldioceses in the United States.

Sally Riley recommends the program by stating,“I had taken EfM about ten years ago, but so muchwas going on in my life that I didn’t get as much out ofit as I wished. So I signed up again. I am glad I did.The text books have been changed and updated. Thereis a good group of participants, and it is a greatexperience. I encourage former participants to joinagain. You will be glad you did!”

Happy to be AboardMarty Easton

I am so glad to have joined the Bruton Parish staff as ofFebruary 27 as part-time Development Director. My role ina nutshell is to bring together parish goals with the financialresources needed to meet them. This means enhancingour planned giving program through the Bruton ParishChurch Foundation, and later this year, spearheading AnnualGiving 2018.

During the Capital Campaign, we announced a visionand invited everyone to participate. The response wasterrific! Now, we who are drawn together by God willcontinue confidently in that concrete work, because of whatwe achieved. Invest in the mission! With our prayers, energy and money allworking together, we will strengthenBruton Parish and bring closer thekingdom of God. In writing and bycollaborating with you, I hope to spreadand share that message.

I’m married to Jim Easton. Wemoved here from Ridgewood, NewJersey in 2002 with our son and twodaughters. I grew up in Richmond andlike good Virginians, my mother andfather brought my brothers and me tosee Colonial Williamsburg and BrutonParish Church. Now Bruton is the centerof my spiritual life. I love many thingsabout it: the music, history, i tsarchitecture and old pictures, the people I’ve known, andabove all, going through the seasons of the church year ona journey to Christ. Joining the wonderful staff is the icingon the cake and I am very grateful.
