SmartShield™ tubing provides a pure PTFE bore forproduct contact and a resilient Santoprene™ elastomer cover forunsurpassed durability, even at back pressures approaching 60 psig.The PTFE core eliminates absorption of preservatives as well asleaching of plasticizers into the process stream. The elastomeric coverprovides resilience for excellent flow rate stability and long flex life.

SmartShield™ tubing complies with FDA guidelines (21CFR177), andhas passed USP Class VI, cytotoxicity, and physicochemical testing atan independent laboratory. SmartShield™ tubing utilizes a pure PTFE bore that is bonded to aSantoprene™ elastomer cover as show in the picture below. Incomparison testing with recirculating water and hydrocarbon fluid ina Watson Marlow 313T pump, SmartShield™ tubing lasted six to tentimes longer than competitive fluoroelastomer tubing and wasunaffected with pumping hydrocarbon solvent. SmartShield™ tubingis compatible with polar and non-polar organic solvents, chemicalintermediates, strong acids and bases, as well as particulate filledsolutions. The pure PTFE bore enables one to pump fluids that wouldreadily degrade competitive elastomer tubing. Fluid immersiontesting has demonstrated that SmartShield™ tubing preventssolvents and other chemicals from attacking the elastomeric cover.The PTFE bore also eliminates concerns about leaching whichwould interfere with high purity applications.

PTFE structure enables high pressure pumpingSmartShield™ tubing, equipped with hydraulically crimpedfittings, provides high pressure capability for peristalticpumping. Fittings are available in sanitary clamp type, cam &groove, pipe thread, compression, and barb style in materialssuch as stainless steel, PFA and PTFE. Other fittings areavailable upon request. The unique PTFE structure of the boreenables millions of flex cycles at elevated pressure. In typicalapplications, SmartShield™ tubing can withstand more than1,000 hours of continuous use, depending upon the pumpdesign and the tube dimensions.

Lowest Absorption TubingSmartShield™ tubing also prevents the absorption and leachingof chemicals either into or out of the tubing wall. In the caseof preservatives, such as methyl and propyl parabenes,SmartShield™ tubing stands alone in preventing absorption dueto the PTFE liner, as illustrated in the chart below. Thus,finished drugs retain their proper amount of preservative andthus their integrity. Likewise, SmartShield™ tubing eliminatesleaching of plasticizers and process aids commonly found inthermoplastic and thermoset elastomer tubing. TOC values aredramatically reduced due to the PTFE liner. As a result,SmartShield™ tubing affords the highest purity processingavailable today.

Steam-in-place & Clean-in-place capability

The unique PTFE structure enables SmartShield™ tubing tobe steam-in-place sterilized at 30 psig saturated steampressure for biopharmaceutical and other sanitaryapplications. The PTFE bore provides universal chemicalresistance which is resistant to all clean-in-placesolutions. SmartShield™ tubing can withstand significantpressure compared to unreinforced tubing. The hydrostaticburst pressure of SmartShield™ tubing ranges from 280 to500 psig, as shown in the figure below.
