Session2Overview

ThesecondsessionwillexplorewhatdefinesJudaismanditscorefoundation intheTorah.Theconceptof“TheDualTorah”willbeintroduced,alongwithadiscussionofthepluralityofJudaisms,andtheneedforunityindiaspora.Theconceptof“law”willbediscussed.AnoverviewofthehistoryoftheTalmudicera(250BC–600AD)willbeconsidered.TheMishnah,Gemara,andTalmudwillbeintroduced.

SessionThreewillcontinuewithadeeperlookatthepertinentBiblicalhistorystartingwiththegivingofTorahonMt.Sinai,butfocusingon theSecondTempleperiod,thedestructionoftheTemple/Jerusalem,andtheensuingTalmudicperiod.

DetailswillincludeEzra’sroleandthedevelopmentofScribes,Pharisees,Mishnaic voicesandthedevelopmentandcodificationoftheTalmud.

Session4Overview

IntheFourthSessionwewilldiscusstheJewish-ChristianSchism,andexpandexposuretoTalmudicliterature,examiningthecomponentsofthisvastseaofliteratureandhowthesecomponentsrelatetoeachother.

Session5OverviewSessionFivewillculminateourserieswithanexcursionintothetextsthemselves,specifically,Pirke Avot andMishnahBerakhotChapter1.

Theclasswillbedivided intopairsintraditionalHavruta styletoexaminesectionsofthetext.Wewillthencometogethertodiscusswhatwasdiscovered.

ConnectionsbetweenRabbinicLiteratureandApostolicwritingswillbediscussed.Resourcesforfurtherstudywillbeprovided.
