Moving into Dance

______________________________The disciplined creativity has produced wonderful individual dancers and great new choreographers. Long may Moving into Dance Mophatong remain in the forefront of beautiful expression in our country and the world (Justice Albie Sachs)

Moving into Dance Mophatong (MID) is South Africa’s premiere professional, full-time, contemporary African dance company and training academy, with a national and international footprint. MID is driven and run by a dynamic team, accountable to a Board of Trustees.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive/Director of Education, Nadia Virasamy and Artistic Director, Mark Hawkins, MID presents work that is thought-provoking and innovative, yet accessible. Its work brings to life the zeitgeist of contemporary African dance, Afrofusion, characterised by sheer physical beauty and self-expression.

MID was founded in 1978 and continues to hold fast to the original ethos of founder, Sylvia ‘Magogo’ Glasser who started her life’s work training youth from disadvantaged communities and equipping them with skills which could be used to overcome poverty. Since its inception as a non-racial dance cultural activist company, MID has had a major impact on the socio-cultural transformation as well as the economic empowerment of South African youth and boasts an incredible alumnus of South Africa’s top performing artists.

Through the organisation’s Performing Arts Training Course (PATC), young talented dancers between 18-30 years old, from some of the most poverty stricken areas in the country, are identified and brought to Johannesburg to be part of the South African Qualification Authority Accredited Training Course.

The students are housed, fed and clothed and are not only trained in dance and movement, but also educated in business communication skills, computer training, career development skills in related environments, research ability and dance facilitation and choreography.

As part of breaking down barriers, MID recently introduced a disability project: “Enable through Dance” which recognises the lived-experience of disability, and seeks to restore confidence and self-esteem as a social phenomenon, through artistic, literary, and other creative means.

1. The Organisation

Nadia Virasamy – CEO – Moving into Dance Mophatong: “39 years is a huge feat in an industry that is under-resourced, under-funded and whose impact is constantly bombarded by questions of economic viability.

MID continues to hold fast to the ethos of our founder, Sylvia Magogo Glasser , who was been honoured in 2016 by being awarded The Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) by the President of South Africa, which honours citizens who excelled in fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism or sport.

Glasser was knighted by King Willem-Alexander of Holland for her tireless work in the arts and was also awarded Living Legend Status by the Department Arts & Culture

Glasser (“Magogo”) started her life’s work by training youth from disadvantaged communities, equipping them with skills which could be used to overcome their socio-economic circumstances. Having begun at the height of apartheid as a non-racial dance group Moving into Dance Mophatong developed into one of South Africa’s première, professional, full-time contemporary African Dance Companies.

MID is a widely acknowledged as a trailblazing, nationally acclaimed, professional company and, importantly, as an accredited training organisation which continues to produce a multitude of award winning and productive dancers, choreographers, arts administrators and teachers working throughout South Africa and internationally.

MID’s full-time, one-year fully accredited Performing Arts Training Course; MID’s 2nd & 3rd year On-the-job Trainee/Apprentice Programme; and an extensive Outreach Programme reaches into under-resourced areas throughout South Africa. Additionally MID offers recreational dance classes for the general public.

MID has a internationally re-known Professional Dance Company which continues to inspire, delight and challenge audiences across class, culture and age throughout South Africa and the world; having performed to enthusiastic audiences throughout Africa, Malaysia, Europe, South America, the USA and Canada.

Enable through Dance, is MID’s new programme which works with people living with disability, enabling them to interact and perform with our Dance Company and Student dancers.

MID’s motto Nyakaze o Fetohe – Making a Difference through Dance - embodies its underlying philosophy and practice of transforming lives, one student, one dancer, one family, and one community at a time.   MID’s 39 years of performance, training and development under challenging conditions has proven one thing, and that is, the power to survive lies in the passion for an art form that does not just build muscle but builds communities.”

“The graduates (of MID) have become synonymous with achievement and excellence in their respective fields. They are making distinctive marks as distinguished choreographers and directors of their own independent companies; excelling as professional dancers in local and international companies; functioning as pioneering teachers, inset trainers, administrators, researchers, stage and TV actors or as cultural officers in government departments”. Adrienne Sichel, leading arts journalist, MID 10th Anniversary Booklet Foreword

4.1 One year full-time vocational training, Performing Arts Training Course (PATC):

ages of 18-30 from some of the most impoverished areas in the country, are identified and invited to

Johannesburg to audition to for inclusion in MID’s South African Qualification Authority Accredited Training

Course.

The MID Performing Arts Training Programme (PATC) operates as a fully accredited training institution through

CATHS-SETA and SAQA functioning as a skills programme providing professional career training. This consists of

both theoretical and practical subjects.

The theoretical dance course consists of dance and related academic subjects as well as Oral and Written

Communication, History & Anthropology of Dance, Financial Acumen and IT & Computer Skills, choreographic

development, research, written and oral communication, and career development skills in related environments

and villages of South Africa have benefited directly from this programme. Downstream, many hundreds more

have benefited from workshops and performances and especially from returning students transferring their skills

to their communities.

The PATC is fully accredited by the CATHS-SETA. The training is based on unit standards from the National

Certificate in Performing Arts (NQF Level 4), which MID implements. This vocational training programme is

premised upon a near two-decade history of the Community Dance Teachers Training Course (CDTTC) that was

recognised in South Africa as an established training programme for community dance teachers.

4.2 Second and third year trainees / Junior Company:

On-the-job training programme for talented individuals selected from the 1-year MID Performing Arts Training

Course programme (PATC).

These additional two years of training encompass practical training in skills of performing, creating and

choreographing works, teaching dance in schools as part of the Arts & Culture Learning Area, learning how to

work with, and teach, people living with disabilities; practical administration and marketing skills for the

Recreational Dance Class programme as well as coordinating the MID Schools Festival.

“It is this art form [Afrofusion] more than any other which is pioneering integration. People of every race, creed, and culture have come together to explore an impulse which bridges the gulfs of ignorance and intolerance, without being judgemental” (Marilyn Jenkins/The Citizen, 1997).

Outreach Projects comprises: workshops in skills of Afrofusion, Contemporary Dance, African Dance,

Choreography and Edudance¹ Skills; as well as performances by MID, and workshop participants

The Outreach Projects are critical for the sustainability and growth of the MID’s programmes. Amongst other

things, these provide us with an opportunity to:

• Identify and work with underprivileged communities and schools lacking resources

• Create new audiences and an awareness of MID and our programmes

• Collaborate with professional and community-based youth groups sharing expertise with them, and identifying and developing new talent

¹ “Edudance” is the registered methodology created and designed by MID, as a way of better teaching young school learners their curriculum subjects through the creativity of Dance and Movement. (® registration pending.)

4.4 Enable Through Dance - Disability Project

Moving into Dance has redirected its thinking around disability to an alternate perspective that speaks to a “social

model” of disability. Through this perspective, we understand that disability is made real through the way society

is organised. We believe that the operations of social and professional life are generally structured around the

needs and functioning of people that are not disabled. People with disability are not fully afforded the tools or

means to operate independently in society or and enjoy the benefits that the rest of society does. We believe

that is not disability that stops disabled people from what everyone else does, what stops them is the fact that

the world ignores their needs for access, understanding, education, and so on. Society excludes disabled people

by erecting physical and mental barriers and assigning labels such as ‘special needs’ people.

MID has realised that removing the barriers through allowing accessibility and equal opportunity to disabled

people could aid in changing the face of how disability is perceived.

Moving into Dance understands that disability is propagated through a lack of social awareness, and will work to

remove the barriers which prevent people with disability from living life to the fullest.

Moving into Dance

As part of breaking down the barriers, MID has introduced a project called “Enable through Dance” which

recognises the lived-experience of disability, and seeks to restore confidence and self-esteem not as a medical

model construct but as a social phenomenon, through artistic, literary, and other creative means.

4.4.1 Project Objectives

To develop & train dance facilitators with an understanding & methodology of inclusive dance teaching &

choreography

To ensure that these creative, skilled and trained facilitators, are competent to work with communities

and schools for disabled people

Students enabled to facilitate dance classes for both able-bodied and disabled dancers (“inclusive” dance

classes) and cultivate the beauty of theatre and dance making it accessible to a broader audience,

specifically those that have always been excluded in society; people and children living with disability

The importance of the project is that it includes disabled people, enabling them to gain self-confidence

and embrace life differently. The project is expected to spread throughout the country as we endeavour to

reach all interested individuals both within our borders and beyond

Our intention is that this project results in dancers with advanced training equipping them to work with

disabled people, increasing awareness, knowledge & respect of disability amongst communities/schools

We work to build a solid relationship with government structures. The greater intention is to build

partnerships with other community organisations catering for the disabled such as private sector and aid

agencies, to ensure that the program does not remain a stand-alone one.12 | P a g e J U N E 2 0 1 7

Page 13: The organisation was established in 1978; became a fund ...  · Web viewMoving into Dance Mophatong (MID) is South Africa’s premiere professional, full-time, contemporary African

Moving into Dance

We understand that it's not disability that stops persons living with disability from doing what everyone else

does, rather the fact that the world ignores their needs: for access, understanding, education, etc. Society

excludes disabled people by erecting physical and mental barriers and assigning labels such as ‘special needs’

people. MID has realised that removing the barriers through allowing accessibility and equal opportunity to

people living with disabilities could aid in changing how disability is perceived in a wider environment.

Moving into Dance understands that disability is sanctioned through a lack of social awareness, and therefore,

we are working to remove the barriers which prevent people living with disability from living their life to the

full.

In an effort to break down these barriers, “Enable through Dance”, seeks to engender confidence and self

esteem in the participants, not as a medical model construct but as a social phenomenon, through artistic,

literary, and other creative means.

Through our Enable through Dance project we wish to create an intervention where we train trainee dancers

to be competent and able to work with disability. The training includes a practical component where the

trainees, under strict guidance, work with youth living with disabilities.

At the end of the training period they will be both competent and capable dancers and trainers, equipped to

work with youth in special needs schools.

One of the greatest successes of our Pilot Project, which was launched in 2016, was that our trainees were

given the opportunity to gain an additional skill set, thereby granting them the opportunity to work with

people living with disabilities. They will have acquired a scarce and critical skill in the South African dance

industry.

4.5 Professional African Contemporary Dance Company:

The Dance Company performs nationally and internationally.

Their activities are structured around an integrated programme of dance creation, performance, development

and national outreach in schools and community groups.
