Admissions Counselor Employment Application Page 1 The Outdoor Academy Eagle’s Nest Foundation Admissions Counselor Job Description 2020 The Outdoor Academy (OA) is an accredited, residential, semester school for high achieving tenth-grade and select ninth- and eleventh-grade students. Rising from a long tradition of experiential education at Eagle's Nest Foundation (ENF), a non-profit organization chartered in 1950, The Outdoor Academy incorporates a college preparatory curriculum with environmental education, wilderness leadership, unique arts offerings and regional studies in a small community setting. Established in 1995, The Outdoor Academy enrolls up to 28 students from across the United States each semester to attend our school located in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina. POSITION SUMMARY The Admissions Counselor is primarily responsible for recruiting qualified students to apply to The Outdoor Academy. To do so, the Admissions Counselor will engage various constituencies including sending school faculty, administration and staff, prospective students and parents, and other targeted audiences in developing an understanding, appreciation, and enthusiasm for a semester experience at The Outdoor Academy. This position requires interpersonal and relationship building skills, strong organization skills, timely record keeping, travel expense tracking, and working with the Admissions Director (AD) on developing and maintaining a budget. There are periods of time such as just before a semester begins, around the application priority deadline, among others when this job is more heavily administrative. Close teamwork with the Admissions Director and the OA Director (OAD) is expected, as well as collaborating on the overall ENF promotional strategy for all programs with the Foundation promotional team (including Camp, Hante, ENF Development staff and the ENF Marketing Coordinator). SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Media, Marketing and Promotions Support the strategic planning process with the Admissions Director to design and implement effective recruitment plans and promotional campaigns. In collaboration with the ENF Marketing Coordinator, update the website and utilize web-based promotional tools as well as appropriate social media outlets to promote OA. Communicate with students, alumni and families engaging them in promotional events in their home regions. Work with Admissions Director, OA Director and other ENF Marketing staff on designing and ordering OA promotional materials. Assist Marketing Coordinator as needed with taking photos of school events for promotional purposes. Student Prospect and Other Admissions Work with AD to follow up on referrals, inquiries and prospect families. Assist Admissions Director with campus tours, Open Houses, promotional mailings, student application process, and other recruitment and admissions activities for OA. Input student prospects into the ENF database. Establish a weekly meeting time with the Admissions Director for the purpose of planning, sharing updates and professional development activities. Alumni Relations Collaborate with the Donor and Alumni Relations Coordinator to provide recruitment materials,

support and guidance to aid members of the Semester Leaders Council (SLC) in recruitment efforts. ● Engage with SLC members by inviting them to presentations, events at alumni homes, meetings, etc. ● Initiate communication with members of the SLC to encourage alumni participation in recruitment

efforts. Administrative

● Support the enrollment process through logging and tracking student paperwork from initial contact through admission and enrollment.

● Maintain records of written and phone communications relating to OA student recruitment. ● Update and maintain a master spreadsheet of all OA sending schools and potential sending schools,

school contacts, date of last engagement and other pertinent information. Travel

● Travel extensively throughout the agreement period. Travel priorities will be developed in coordination with the AD and OA Director and shall reflect the admissions recruitment strategy and initiatives designed to expand the OA applicant pool. The Admissions Counselor will be responsible for scheduling, planning and delivering updated presentations to prospective OA students and their families. Travel throughout the southeast will be extensive and typically within driving distance. Travel to other areas of the US will be prioritized by the AD and OAD and carried out by the all three team members.

● Assist Admissions Director in researching markets and identifying new schools for targeted recruitment. ● Promote OA in schools and other venues, such as alumni homes, climbing gyms, youth environmental

clubs, camp and Semester School fairs, etc. ● Travel mainly using Eagle’s Nest vehicle and staying as a guest in alumni homes when possible. ● Maintain detailed notes about visits and contacts established during promotional travel for database

input and recordkeeping as well as the maintenance of travel expenses. ● Note: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eagle’s Nest Foundation has currently placed a hold on non-

essential business travel. At present, the Admissions Counselor is not traveling, and these job duties will be replaced with other work related to remote / digital recruitment until such a time as conditions related to the pandemic allow for travel to resume.

OA Program

● As need, experience, and interest dictate, assist OA Outdoor Education Manager by staffing the occasional backpacking, climbing or paddling trip. All trips should be planned in conjunction with and approved by the Admissions Director.

● Possibly assist the OA Dean of Students by serving as a backup resident. Depending on need, experience, and interest, this might be either one night a week throughout the school year or as an occasional substitute.

SUPERVISOR This position reports to the Admissions Director at The Outdoor Academy, who will supervise the quality of the Admissions Counselor’s daily work. The job responsibilities for the Admissions Counselor may overlap, at times, with those of the Admissions Director. The Admissions Director is responsible for the OA Promotion and Recruitment strategy and will delegate tasks to the Admissions Counselor in support of that strategy. The Admissions Director may also assign tasks not referenced in the above list of primary responsibilities, as needed. The Admissions Director will serve as a mentor and provide the Admissions Counselor with appropriate professional development opportunities. REQUIREMENTS

● Bachelor’s degree ● Prior work experience in enrollment management, marketing or public relations preferred

● Strong public speaking capabilities and refined communication skills

● Ability to work in Microsoft, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite and other basic programs

● Database management skills, preferably with Salesforce or similar CRM

● Versed in social media and website updating

● Well-developed planning and organizational skills ● Knowledge in the field of outdoor, experiential and/or secondary education

● Enthusiasm for educational enrichment programming, holistic education and the Eagle’s Nest Mission

● Clear driving record

● CPR/First Aid required; Wilderness First Aid or higher useful ● Experience leading backpacking, climbing or whitewater paddling trips useful

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS

● On campus general office hours for this position are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday with one hour for lunch (taking meals with the students is encouraged, and meals are provided in the dining room when students are on campus). The Admissions Counselor is expected to be on campus for all opening and closing days of The Outdoor Academy and occasional specific hours to be determined by the OA Director. Other expectations of this position include participation in campus events such as Trustee Retreat Weekends (February, July and October), Open Houses and Reunions.

● Flexibility to work evenings and/or weekend hours as needed to fulfill demands of the position. “Make-Up Days” may be requested due to required travel or other job responsibilities as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

● Ability to work in an active environment on a large campus that includes walking trails and stairs. ● Ability to participate in occasional off campus hiking, climbing or paddling trips. ● The ability to lift heavy items and boxes occasionally is required. ● Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential
