Pashtun Migrants in the Northern Areas of PakistanMatthias Weinreich

This book draws primarily on oral sources from the author’s own research carried out between 1993 and 1997. It outlines the settlement history of Pashto speakers in Pakistan’s Northern Areas over the last 150 years, concentrating on the decades following the opening of the Karakoram Highway in 1978. It also looks at how the migrants’ language situation had developed by the mid 1990s. The book also aims to suggest how the trends related to Pashtun migration to the Northern Areas in the mid 1990s could develop in the near future. Interwoven with this analysis are childhood memories and life stories recounted by the Pashto speaking migrants interviewed by the author, which will give readers a fascinating insight into their lives.

Matthias Weinreich is presently working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Thirty Years on the North-West Frontier Recollections of a Frontiersman

Leslie Mallam

Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Mallam’s memoir covers his career, both as a soldier in the Indian Army (2nd Bengal Lancers) and as a political officer on the North-West Frontier. In a career spanning nearly three decades in the Indian Political Service, Leslie Mallam developed a special interest and love for the North-West Frontier and its people. He established an exceptional rapport with the many tribes of the Frontier, especially the Pathan people, with whom he shared a lasting mutual respect. His career also encompassed his roles as a Barrister, District Judge and Chief Secretary to the Governor of the Province.

‘Thirty Years on the North-West Frontier is a unique portrait of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, providing a personal insight into the life and beliefs of a 20th century British political officer.’

—Victoria Schofield, writer, broadcaster, independent analyst and commentator

Leslie Mallam (1895–1978) spent most of his career in British India and served both within the British and Indian armies and in the Indian Political Service.

Article 370A Constitutional History of Jammu and Kashmir

A. G. Noorani

On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force with a unique provision—Article 370. The special status accorded to the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the Article meant that its people lived under a different set of laws while being a part of the Indian Union. Alternating deftly between history and politics, A. G. Noorani examines a wide range of rare, often unseen and unnoticed, documents pertaining to Article 370. He incisively analyses the implications and consequences of the article for the constitutional democracy of the Indian state and nation.

A. G. Noorani is a lawyer specializing in constitutional law and history. He is also a columnist for Frontline and Dawn, and has authored many books.2011

Dead ReckoningMemories of the 1971 Bangladesh War

Sarmila Bose

This ground-breaking book chronicles the 1971 war in South Asia by reconstituting the memories of those on opposing sides of the conflict. Through a detailed investigation of events on the ground, Sarmila Bose contextualises and humanises the war, while analysing what the events reveal about the nature of the conflict itself. She reconstructs events through interviews conducted in Bangladesh and Pakistan, published and unpublished reminiscences in Bengali and English of participants on all sides, official documents, foreign media reports and other sources. Her book challenges assumptions about the nature of the conflict and exposes the ways in which the 1971 conflict is still being played out in the region.

Sarmila Bose is Senior Research Fellow in the Politics of South Asia at the University of Oxford, UK.

Education in PakistanLearning from Research Partnerships

Edited by Ayesha Bashiruddin, Zubeda Bana, and Arbab Khan Afridi

In 2005, Pakistan and Norway entered into an agreement to start a multi-sector ‘Institutions Cooperation Programme’, aimed at providing an opportunity to public and private sector teacher education institutions in Pakistan to collaborate with Norway for improvement of education in Pakistan. Subsequently, Oslo University College, Norway, entered into a partnership with the Institute of Education and Research–Peshawar University (IER–PU) and the Aga Khan University–Institute for Educational Development (AKU–IED) to develop institutional capacity. This book discusses the partnership between the IER–PU and Oslo University College in the higher education sub-sector. It gives a complete account of the above-mentioned joint research study, focusing on teaching, learning, teacher education, educational leadership and management, assessment practices, and whole school improvement initiative.

Ayesha Bashiruddin is Assistant Professor, AKU–IED, and chair of the Research and Policy Studies Advisory Committee at AKU–IED.

Zubeda Bana is Assistant Professor, AKU–IED.

Arbab Khan Afridi is an associate professor and Director of the Institute of Education and Research, University of Peshawar.

Jinnah of PakistanStanley Wolpert

Portraying Jinnah’s story in all of its human complexity, this authoritative and uniquely insightful biography explores the fascinating public and private life of the eminently powerful but little understood leader who changed the map of the Asian subcontinent. Wolpert vividly recounts how the tragic clash of personalities and party platforms that initially pitted Jinnah against Gandhi escalated from a personal rivalry into a conflict of national and international proportions. The author shows how Jinnah’s shrewd and skillful leadership combined brilliant advocacy and singular tenacity to win his suit for the creation of Pakistan on behalf of the ‘Muslim nation’—his sole client during the last, lonely, pain-filled decade of his life.

Stanley Wolpert is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

Compiled and edited by Saleem Qureshi

The f irst edition of this book presented reminiscences of friends and contemporaries of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, together with documents relating to his time in London and extracts from Jinnah’s speeches conveying his political philosophy. In this second edition, new material has been introduced, adding to the original work, to include lesser known aspects of Jinnah’s professional practice as well as a Chapter on Islamic banking that is relevant in the current financial climate.

Saleem Qureshi is a London-based barrister. He is a founding member of the World Association of Muslim Jurists, Lahore, and Member, General Council of the Bar.

On the Indian FrontierLord Curzon of Kedleston

Edited by Dhara Anjaria

In 1894, the explorer, geographer, geopolitical analyst and future Viceroy of India, George Nathaniel Curzon, undertook a 1200-mile trek across the Pamirs. Over fifty-four days, he rode across some of the most hostile terrain in Asia. Curzon’s main objective in making this journey was to see for himself that terrain from which the security of Britain’s Indian Empire it was thought could be breached, engage with the fiercely independent little kingdoms so strategically located at the gateway to the Indian Empire, and thus pre-empt Russian engagement with India. His observations resulted in a monograph, meant to be one of a series on imperial defence. The work, which went unpublished, is crucial for an understanding of one of the most well known players of the Great Game, especially as Viceroy of India. It is reproduced here in its entirety with attendant graphs and tables.

Dhara Anjaria’s research interests are nineteenth-century European imperialism in Asia and the nature of the colonial state, in particular its administrative and political facets.

Scent in the Islamic GardenA Study of Literary Sources in Persian and Urdu

Second Edition

Ali Akbar Husain

This study brings together the disciplines of medicine, horticulture and poetry in seventeenth-century Islamic India. The book considers scent to be of particular significance in Islam and examines its importance in Islamic cultures, in terms of landscape expressions in Muslim India. As one of the last bastions of Islamic culture in peninsular India, Hyderabad, within the larger region of the Deccan, is the particular focus of the study, and the genre of seventeenth-century garden poetry in the Deccani Urdu tradition is one of the means for examining landscape expressions at Hyderabad. Utilising literary texts, this study exemplifies the syncretic nature of the Deccani gardens, which were Persian in inspiration but rooted in India, and permeated with the rasas of the Indian forests.

Ali Akbar Husain manages the undergraduate architectural programme at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi.

Women, War and the Making of BangladeshRemembering 1971

Yasmin Saikia

Based on several oral accounts, this book traces the multiple experiences of Bangladeshi women in the 1971 war which led to the creation of Bangladesh. Survivors tell their stories, revealing the power of speaking of what is deemed unspeakable. Women talk of rape and torture, and of the loss of status and citizenship. They also speak of their role as agents of change, as social workers, caregivers and wartime fighters. In addition, a few men recollect their wartime brutality as well as their post-war efforts to regain a sense of humanity, to reconcile and heal unresolved traumas. This book sheds new light on the relationship between nation, history and gender in postcolonial South Asia, by not only interrogating the making of a new nation, but simultaneously posing a challenge to post-1971 historiography in Bangladesh, highlighting the many ‘absences’ in the official and unofficial histories offered so far.

Yasmin Saikia is Hardt-Nickachos Chair in Peace Studies and Professor of History, Arizona State University, USA.
