at nature’s pure heartKangaroo Island’s food and wine industry takes its leadfrom the clean green environment in which it thrives. Nature’s products as nature intended, or with a little helpfrom a local, make for highly sought after fine gourmetfoods and distinctive wines.

All the local establishments are small. Quantity is not theconcern. These small industries flourish because of thequality of their produce: free-range eggs, olive oil, nativeberry jams, smoked fish, sauces and marinades, regionalyoghurts and cheeses, freshwater marron, breads and biscuits. The Island is renowned for its honey, all of it produced from pure strain Ligurian bees. Quality and variety, fresh from the land.

The sea also yields its bounty: oysters, prawns, crayfish, whiting, snapper and garfish.

The food tunes into the seasons and nature, and muchof this top quality produce is hard to find anywhere else.

Since Kangaroo Island was declared a wine region in2001, 30 growers now tend 200 hectares of vines andproduce 18 homegrown labels.

The temperate stable climate nurses the grapes to along, slow ripening that develops strong varietal fruitflavours and intense colour in complex and distinctivewines.

Take a food and wine trail today. Unwind on a long, emptyroad to quality local produce, some of it unique to Kangaroo Island. Enjoy the taste, the view and the hospitality.
