There are many different types of trends: food, fashion, electronic, music, dance and many others came and went during 2017. Food was a huge hit in the year 2017. Many restaurants started specializing in unique desserts and fried foods. Cheese stuffed ev- erything. Many restaurants have added extra cheese to anything that can be consumed. Unicorn drinks and snacks have taken over many of the coffee and breakfast food chains. Fashion is always a huge trend no matter what year it is. Fash- ion defines who a person is and where they stand in society. In 2017 popular fashion pieces for girls’ outfits were crop tops, sweater crop tops, rompers, and stylized leggings. The guys’ style tends to stay the same, but for 2017 the romper for ‘him’ made an appearance. Makeup hit an all time high with the glitz and the glam. Makeup has always had an impact on society, but now it seems as if it has taken over. Wiggly eyebrows, glitter everything, and contouring were popular trends of 2017. By Allison Poore Panther Staff Writer The high school was built in 1927, and different features of the school make this obvious. On Wednesday, January 18th, Michael G. Mayo, the president of The Ebert Mayo Design Group from Man- hattan, came and talked to junior high and high school PLC groups. These groups are made up of representatives from each PAWS class. Mayo was the architect behind the reconstruction of Marys- ville High School. The reason for the visit was to find out what changes students and staff wish to see to the structure of Concordia High School. During the high school meeting, students were asked about dif- ferent areas of the school that they wished to see improved. When it came to the exterior of the school, the biggest problem that students mentioned was the size of the parking lot. At the beginning of the year, teachers and students are allowed to buy a parking stall. Once stalls run out, remaining students and teachers must find a spot else- where, which may require walking a couple of blocks. Parking is also an issue during sporting events, especially in the cold. Inside the school, there were many changes students suggested. New bathrooms were toward the top of the list. The boys requested doors for the stalls. They also want to widen the stalls. Girls requested locks for the stalls. Sink faucets also need to be improved. In some sinks, the user can only wash one hand at a time. This is because the other hand has to turn the faucet simultaneously. The locker rooms were also a popular topic. The girls’ locker room showers are not in the best shape, and water floods the floors. The boys’ varsity locker room is presentable, but the JV locker room is a different story. In order to shower, boys have to walk across a hallway between the two locker rooms. There are also not enough showers, and there are no doors on toilet stalls. The wres- tlers often share with opposing basketball teams. All agreed that the old gym is in desperate need of improvement. Athletes often complain about using that gym because of the risk of injury. This danger is caused by the floor. The floor contains cracks and holes. Attempts have been made to patch these holes, but they have not been entirely successful. There are also tiny nails that stick up from the floor. Another issue with the old gym is the size. The gym is extremely small. There is not enough room for spectators to watch the games. When throwing the ball in, players have to be backed up next the wall. This shortens the length of the court. There are several places in the school where overcrowding oc- curs. Some hallways are narrower than others. This can cause a tight fit while trying to walk to classes. In front of Mrs. Carlgren, Mrs. Meyer, and Mr. Hinkel’s rooms there is always congestion. Jr. high students are trying to get up and down the stairs while high school students are trying to come in and out of these classrooms. The hall- way by the teachers’ workroom is also overcrowded. One other area of congestion is the doorway at the top of the multi-purpose room ramp. It is too narrow for the traffic between classes. In the cafeteria, the lunch ladies have tried to improve the circula- tion of students trying to get their food. Their effort is appreciated, but it is still hard to maneuver around the lunch room. The back- stage of the auditorium is also a tight squeeze. This school holds a considerable amount of community history, and the fact that the school is still standing after this many years is impressive, but it is not 1927 anymore. This is 2018 and there needs to be changes made to our school. Both current students and teachers are hopeful for these changes to be implemented. Future students may be fortunate enough to see these modifications. January - 2018 The Panther

By Chloe BeimsA Panther Staff Writer The start of the new year brings around the familiar tradition of New Year’s resolutions. Common resolu-tions are to exercise more, to eat better, and to learn a new skill or hobby just to name a few. They are a great way to change yourself for the better. They are easy to come up with but hard to keep. Most resolutions are for-gotten early on. At least 80% are ditched by the second week in February. Only 8% are kept throughout the year. So you might be asking, how do I keep them? A good way to keep your resolution is instead of mak-ing a goal that you want to exercise more in general, say you want to go to the gym three times a week. Make it a concrete specific goal instead of an abstract idea. That makes it much easier to keep yourself on track. You can easily make sure that you are keeping your goal. Another approach you may take is to start off slowly. Many people try to give it their all right off. That will just manage to make you give up faster. Start off gradu-ally and work your way up to where you want to be. You won’t burn yourself out as fast.

A common problem with these resolutions are that they aren't realistic. Many plan way too big and never follow through. Make realistic goals for yourself that you know you can accomplish. Once you accomplish your initial goal add to it. Make smaller goals to lead up to your overall goal. If you want to cut out sugar, which is a common resolution, cut out certain sweet foods a little at a time. Slowly build to the end goal, no sugar at all. If you give it your all right of the bat then you are bound to fail. Now that we covered how to manage your resolutions you might be asking, are Americans the only ones who take part in this tradition? This custom is common in the US, but it doesn’t only happen here. People around the world set goals when the new year rolls around. In Russia their New Year’s resolutions focus more on education. They plan on learning more. They also make a goal to pay off any debts they may have. Many countries participate in some form of this cus-tom, but where did it come from? Surprisingly, it can be dated back to the ancient Babylonians. Theirs weren’t like our modern day resolutions. Their new year started

in mid-March when their crops were planted. A twelve-day festival took place. They either crowned a new king or paid homage to the one reigning. They also made promises to the gods, which could be called their “new year resolutions”. Those promises included paying debts and returning borrowed objects. A similar tradition happened in ancient Rome. After Julius Caesar had set the calendar as we know it today, they believed that a god named Janus would look back into the previous year and then ahead into the future. They would make promises of good behavior to him. For early Christians, the first day of the year was used to look back on the mistakes of the past year and try to better themselves during the upcoming year. This custom plays an important role in our modern day resolutions. We took these traditions and transformed them into what we know today. You can see common themes from all of these traditions in our modern day customs. Instead of focusing on the religious side we instead focus on our own personal goals. We use the new year to try and better ourselves.

January - 2018 The Panther

By Emily DanielsPanther Staff Writer Many people have hidden talents. Raven Al-

len has a talent that is unknown to most of us. She is a fire spinner. She has been spinning for about two years and loves that she can express herself through her fire staff.

Fire spinning has been a method of thera-py for Allen because she can express her emo-tions and feelings through her staff. If she is upset or feeling down, twirling helps her work through it. She also loves to stand out and be the best that she can be at her craft.

Allen said that her favorite part about her art is, “being able to do something that most people can’t. I also love the uniqueness of it. I love to amaze people who have never seen something like it before,” and it truly is amaz-ing to watch fire spinning while music is play-ing. It is an awe-inspiring art form.

There are many physical and mental chal-lenges that Allen has had to get over to become great at her craft. Mentally she had to learn that she cannot be afraid of the fire because she is in control. However, she also must be aware of the danger. Physically she has learned that she will get bumps, bruises and the occasional burn. This has taught her patience and perse-verance.

Allen says her favorite songs to spin to are songs that start slow and speed up. One of her favorite songs to twirl to is “Misery Busi-ness” by Paramore. This exciting hidden talent has added flare to an already interesting and unique student at CHS. It makes you wonder. What other hidden talents are in CHS class-roms waiting to be seen?

The talk of the school is, “Who is going to win that Apple watch?” The new Panther App for CHS is a success. Ev-eryone has seen a rise in the participation at school events. However, this app may be a suc-cess this year, but it does have some drawbacks.

Cons: People can cheat on the app. They may check into events that they were not at, but the app still gives them their full points. Some-times the app will not work. It will not recog-nize some of the partici-pants’ locations, there-fore; it won’t let them check in.

There is only one big prize in the end. One winner, no runner up prizes. Participants for-get to check in even if they were there. There

is no reminder. As an athlete or participant in an activity, it is hard to check into your own event. The event check-in times are only during a certain time frame. This makes it super hard to get points for being in the activity.

Besides the problems, there are multiple ad-vantages to this app.

Pros: The app gives you notifications on the themes or upcom-ing events. You also can win different prizes for a certain number of points such as t-shirts, cups or, even free appetizers at local restaurants. It is awesome how you can win prizes throughout the year.

This app is a good way to connect the stu-dents with the technolo-gies that keep them in-

terested and involved. It is a very organized and user-friendly app. This helps students plan ahead and allows easy access to check when events are and when they start.

The app does not just include sports. It in-volves different activi-ties such as choir, dra-ma, and Student Council events. The community is staying involved with the app also. It is not just for students; anyone in the community can get it and win prizes.

This app has been a great addition for not just our student body but also for our com-munity. It has brought unity throughout this school year. We hope to see great use of this app throughout the years.

By Britney GilkesonPanther Staff Writer There are many rules and regulations in our everyday lives. Many of these rules

and regulations are made to keep us safe. However, we also tend to make unspoken rules for ourselves.

When going to the bathroom, parking in a parking lot or finding a seat in the movie theater we make sure not to be right next to a stranger. In the bathroom, people usually make sure not to sit in a stall right next to another stall that is being used. When going into the movie theater people take a minute or two to look for the best place to sit so that they will not be sitting next to someone or directly in front of someone. This is similar with parking in a parking lot. We try to leave a “buffer” space between our car and other cars.

When students go into a classroom for the first time they choose a place to sit and sit there for the rest of the year, even if the teacher doesn’t make a seating chart. Then, the students tend to get angry when someone sits in their seat, even though there is not an actual seating chart in place. This also goes for school, work, church and parking.

Many people eat their food in a certain order, or they make sure that their food does not touch other foods while eating. Some people also have to have their sand-wiches cut diagonally. They won’t eat a sandwich cut straight across.

We also tend to get excited when someone has the same birthday as we do. But if you think about it there are billions of people in the world and only 365 days in a year, so there will be multiple people with the same birthday. It’s not that unusual.

While at the grocery store, adults regularly go through the store the same way every time. This helps them to be sure that they have gotten everything on their list. Also, when trying to make the shopping trip short people avoid talking to others. If we go down the same aisle as someone we know, we pretend to be on a “hunt” for something like we don’t notice them.

When receiving a phone call we are sure to not pick up on the first ring, unless it is from our parents. Picking up on the first ring seems too needy. Many people also have a certain number that they choose over all the others.

Even though we have these odd habits they are what make each and everyone of us different.
