The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
is a Holy Day of Obligation.
Masses are Next
Monday, August 15 at
9:00 AM & 7:00 PM
Please note there is not a
Vigil Mass the night before.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII, in his
encyclical Munificentissimus
Deus, dogmatically defined
the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. In his teaching
he states that "at the end of
her earthly course, Mary was assumed into heavenly
glory, body and soul." He also wrote that it was not
new doctrine he was defining, but rather formalizing
the revelation given us through the Apostles.
Interesting to note is that the encyclical simply speaks
of the end of her life and does not talk about her death.
The Church leaves it to pious opinion and does not
have a defined position on if or how Mary died.
The 7:00 AM Masses in the Holy Spirit Chapel on
Tuesdays and Thursdays will be suspended
temporarily during August. We will resume our
regular schedule in September.
From the Pastor’s Corner
CYCLE C 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Y ou also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not
expect, the Son of Man will come." The only thing
we really know about when Jesus will come again is
that we won't be expecting it. As Jesus instructs us today, the best plan of action is
thus to be prepared at all times. We need to be ready and waiting to meet Jesus so that when he
does return, it won't catch us off guard.
A little thought experiment might be helpful here. Let's imagine that the doorbell rings this
evening after dinner. We open the door and find Jesus standing there. He asks to come in. Are we
ready for this honored guest? What will he find when he steps in unannounced? Is everyone at
peace around the house? Is everyone speaking with love and acting with generosity? Is there
anything in our home that, in his presence, we might be ashamed of--books, shows, movies, or
music that aren't appropriate? Pictures, Facebook posts, or a record of Internet history that we
hope he won't discover?
Now, imagine that he came unannounced into our HEARTS this evening. What would he
find there? Are our hearts ready to welcome Jesus? In truth, we need not wait for the second
coming to have Jesus in our hearts. He wants to live there already today!
So regardless of the timing of the second coming of Christ, we would do well to follow the
traditional spiritual practice of a daily examination of conscience to see where we are doing well
and where we need to make changes. Taking such a deliberate spiritual inventory is an excellent
way to help us be ready for Jesus like those servants "who await their master's return from a
wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks."
There are many reasons adults seek to find out more about the Catholic Church. It makes no difference if you have been raised in another denomination, have no church affiliation or experience or if you were never baptized. You may have started out Catholic but never completed your initiation with the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Whatever your reasons, know there are others like yourself who desire a closer relationship with Christ and a community in which to thrive and worship to help deepen that relationship. RCIA helps individuals journey to a deeper understanding of Jesus and the Catholic faith. It is a life changing journey. To find out if this is right for you or for more information, please contact Eileen Cassidy at 845-758-3732 or [email protected]

“Were Dominic alive today,
he might diagnose needs in
the church similar to those he
saw in the thirteenth century.
His prescription for us might
also be the same as it was
then: return to Christian
fundamentals and build small
communities committed to
high gospel ideals.”
