The Parish Friend A Newsletter of the Plainville United Methodist Church May/June, 2019 “The church at the heart of the community with the community at heart.” From the Pastor Last Monday I was finally able to visit my local supermarket. I was greeted by a riot of color as I walked in the door. The clearance sale bin was full to overflowing with plastic Easter eggs. It as a clear sign that, so far as the world is concerned, Easter is over and done with. But for Christians that is not the case. There are still Easter hymns to be sung. In coming Sundays the Gospel readings will include the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus. The other scripture readings will be from the Book of Acts, which will tell the story how the followers of Jesus were empowered by the good news of the Resurrection. Other readings will be from Revelation, which tells how all believers will at last share in the final victory of Christ over death. My wife Karen and I were married in her home church, which is First United Methodist Church in Wheaton, Maryland. The front of the church is dominated by a big stained glass window with a victorious Christ. At his feet is a cross that is warped and twisted – see photo above. The message is that Christ has broken the power of death forever and we need not fear it any more. The world may have moved on, but for those of us who believe in Jesus Christ and who seek to follow him, every morning is Easter morning. “The church at the heart of the community with the community at heart.”

From the Pastor Last Monday I was finally able to visit my local supermarket.

See you Sunday, Pastor Stuart

MEMBERSHIP NEWS We lost one of our most dedicated and involved members in March, with the passing of Joan (McQuade) Clarke. Joan was a very active member and will be greatly missed. She was a friend to so many people and could always be counted on to get things done. Joan was a past Junior Choir Director, faithfully served on the Staff/Pastor/Parish Committee, the Administrative Council, was a dedicated worker at the Food Pantry, took reservations for the suppers and assigned the seating for the Calendar supper on the Supper Committee, and Joan was an integral part of the annual church fair, along with many other activities that she oversaw. Joan and Bill were the Lay Leaders, taking part in special services, arranging for the flowers at Christmas and Easter, and just overall “being there” whenever anything was needed. Joan was so proud of her grandchildren: Chelsea Prioli, Kaileigh Lombardo, and Nate Clarke. A recent highlight of her life was when her great-grandaughter, Mia Prioli, was baptized at PUMC in January 2019. Mia is the 6th generation to continue the legacy of Joan’s family of being a part of PUMC!! We offer our sincere condolences and prayers to Joan’s family: to Bill, and to their children, Peter and Janet, and their families.

HISTORY NEWS The New England United Methodist Historical Commission has found a home for its historic items in the Central United Methodist Church, 65 West Elm St., Brockton MA. The artifacts that were being saved had been on display at the NE Conference offices in Lawrence MA. When the Conference bought a new building and moved its offices to Andover, no allowance was made for displaying or storing the artifacts. Since the conference offices moved, the artifacts have been stored in several self-storage units and a search was on for a suitable permanent space. After viewing different sites, the commission was offered and worked with the Central UM Church and its pastor, Rev. Abraham Waya, in Brockton, on relocating the historic items to a large hall in the church. The furniture, stained glass windows, pictures, boxes, etc. have now been transferred there and will be on display for viewing. Times the space will be open will be announced.

The Living Bread Food Pantry The Summer months – June, July and August – are when food donations drop significantly. The kids are out of school and families now need to feed their children breakfast and lunch at home. Often, school age children were provided these meals for free from their schools. If your workplace or volunteer organization can run a food drive for a few weeks during the summer months, that would be a big help. Please see the suggested foods list enclosed in this issue of The Parish Friend. There are two lists so you can share one with a friend. Together we are the Church - “The church in the heart of the community with the community at heart.” We need your support and thank you for your help feeding the people in our community this summer.

The Living Bread Food Pantry is searching for someone to pick up food from Walmart. The Pantry receives donated meats and vegetables from Walmart every Wednesday. We are in need of someone who has a large van or truck who can pick up several heavy boxes from Walmart in North Attleboro Wednesday mornings at 8:30 am. You might have to load these boxes into your van or truck. You can bring a friend to help you. When you arrive at the Pantry, we have several people who can help move these boxes in and set the food up so it is ready for the Pantry that night. Please call Becca Simon at 508-643-1238 if you are able to help out with this.

STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE Saturday, May 11th 3:30-5:30pm/Pantry Help Wanted Please remember to set out a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11th – in the morning before your mailman comes. The Postal workers will pick it up and deliver it to the pantry. Our biggest needs right now are: canned fruits and individual fruit cups, spaghetti sauce, boxed rice (white and brown) and rice mixes (pilaf, etc), boxed potatoes (scalloped, mashed, etc), coffee and toiletries (tooth paste and brushes, TP, bars of bath soap, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, disposable razors, shaving cream, etc.). Most every town, nationwide, is participating in this drive, tho’ only food collected in Plainville will come to our pantry directly. Food donated in other towns will go to your local food pantry. Please give generously. We will need volunteers to help sort, date and put the food away in our pantry from 3:30-5:30pm. Please come help us in the pantry and stay for delicious and hearty Appetizers and Desserts! See Donna Brown or Call the Church office to reserve your seat!
