SAINT MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA
The Parish of Born: Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, August 26, 1910 Died: September 5, 1997 Canonized: September 4, 2016
Founded 1912 Founded 1909
Padre’s Corner AUGUST 18, 2019 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME John Roland Revel Tolkein was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein (modern South Africa). His adventurous life culminated on September 2, 1973 in Bournemouth, England. The famed English author wrote the “Hobbitt” and “Lord of the Rings,” 1937 and 1954-56. His father Arthur was a book manager, echoing the profession of the dad in “Mary Poppins.” His mother Mabel developed a passion for languages and landscapes after Arthur died, leading to a sharpening of his literary skills. She would also incline him toward religious faith with her conversion to Catholicism in 1900, though this resulted in a financial rupture with her Baptist family. Mabel died in 1904 of diabetes, a condition today which could have been treated with insulin. A decade after her death, John wrote: “My our dear mother was a martyr indeed, and it is not to everybody that God grants so easy a way to his great gifts as he did to Hilary (his one sibling brother) and myself, giving us a mother who killed herself with labour and trouble to ensure us keeping the faith.” Mabel, knowing full well her mortality, assigned advance guardianship of her two boys to a good friend, Father Francis Xaviar Morgan, a Catholic priest in the Birmingham Oratory. John reflected in 1965: “He was a Welsh-Spaniard Tory, band seemed to some just a pottering old gossip. He was, and he was not. I first learned charity and forgiveness from him, and the light of it pierced even the liberal darkness out of which I came, knowing more about “Bloody Mary” than the Mother of Jesus who was never mentioned except as an object of wicked worship by the Romanists.” His story is a telling one of the kindly priests and a strong Catholic faith, in a world of deep challenges. Tolkein attended a number of Catholic boarding schools within England, including King Edward’s and Saint Philip’s in Birmingham. He developed three strong friendships at the former, though sadly two of them died in service as soldiers in World War I. A 1911 trip to Switzerland provided much of the visual inspiration for his later literary works, further defined by the study of literature at Exeter College in Oxford. He met Edith May Bratt at the age of sixteen, though she was nineteen and a Protestant (though a later convert to Catholicism). Father Morgan was not in favor of this relationship initially, believing it would negatively impact Tolkein’s academic growth. John would reflect in 1941: “I had to choose between disobeying and grieving (or deceiving ) a guardian (Father Morgan) who had been a father to me, more than most fathers…and “dropping” the love affair until I was 21. I don’t regret my decision, though it was very hard on my lover. But it was not my fault. She was completely free and under no according vow to me, and I should have not just complaint (except to the unreal romantic code) if she had got married to someone else. For very nearly three years I did not see or write to my lover. It was extremely hard, especially at first. The effects were not wholly good: I fell back into folly and slackness and misspent a good deal of my first year at college.” Edith and John Roland married on March 22, 1916 at Saint Mary Immaculate Church in Warwick. Three months later he was summoned to military duty at the River Somme in France. Tolkein survived the French warfare, and later had four children with Edith (two still survive). He retired from Oxford in 1959, and she died in 1971. The story of Tolkein’s mother dying evokes the loss of any parent, which we virtually and individually experience. When my mother died this Mother’s Day, on May 12, the motifs of spirituality were quite similar to that of Mabel Tolkein. Barbara Ellen told us that she loved us, believed the Blessed Mother called us together for the last time, and that she wanted us, her children, to call upon her in Heaven when we needed her help from the upper tiers of reality from there. The death quickly underscored the importance of the heavenly realm, placing at our far lesser priority earthly monies and favorite sports teams. A priest friend from West Virginia promised his prayers from his state, as did a former college president (“We are sure that your dear mother was – and is – tremendously proud of you, that she loved you greatly, and that she will continue to intercede for you from Heaven.”) and a retired football player Gary Cuozzo (“So sorry for you, but we know Heaven is a much more wonderful place than this earth. Thanks to our Lord Jesus, we have assurance of eternal life with Him.”) (Cont’d on page 3)

TODAY TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Jeremiah urged the people of Jerusalem to surrender to the enemy. This angered the princes, who then requested that Jeremiah be put to death. The king allowed the princes to leave him in a cistern without food or water. But after Ebed Melech pleaded for Jeremiah's life, the king decided to free him. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 This letter to the Hebrews inspires all Christians to persevere, in spite of the trials they may face. Jesus endured much suffering and was rewarded by God. Despite our struggles, we must remember Jesus' ability to endure and maintain strong faith in him. Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus tells his disciples that his message will not bring peace to the earth. Instead, even families will become sharply divided because some members will embrace him, while others condemn him. Monday Jgs 2:11-19; Mt 19:16-22 Tuesday Jgs 6:11-24a; Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday Jgs 9:6-15; Mt 20:1-16 Thursday Jgs 11:29-39a; Mt 22:1-14 Friday Ru 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Mt 22:34-40 Saturday Rv 21:9b-14; Jn 1:45-51

Padres Corner Cont’d 1600 years ago Saint Monica, sick like Mabel and Barbara Ellen, told her philandering (later saintly) son Augustine to “remember her at the altar of the Lord” with prayer and the sacramental Mass. Circa that period of time, Saint Basil the Great reflected: “As a preparation for our life after the resurrection, our Lord tells us in the gospel how we should live here and now. He teaches us to be peaceable, long suffering, undefined by desire for pleasure and detached from world wealth. In this way, we can achieve by our own free choice, the kind of life that will be natural in the world to come.” Actress Doris Day, who died the day after my mother, was quite the philosopher when she penned these words: “As we journey under our individual umbrellas, we should not forget we all share the same sky.” With our shared humanitarian goals is this written gem from 1776 by American patriot Thomas Paine: “It is not in numbers, but in unity that our great strength lies.” A wonderful friend companion in life reflected this to my – our – broken heart: “My heart is broken for you. I will keep you in my prayers and pray that your Mom is dancing with the angels. We are here for a short time. You have been blessed beyond measure. Your mom’s faith will lead her right to Heaven where she will feel love, happiness and she will be free from her earthly burdens. She will be with you always.” On May 18 in Monticello, New York famed singer Paul Anka told his gathered crowd that “The Times of Your Life” is best realized through loving family and friends. I read at my mother’s funeral, on May 16, the following poem called a “Mother’s Monument.” The words flow like this: “A priest one evening made his easy way into a graveyard, where his mother lay. And scarcely had he reached the humble ground, than tears stole out to bless the hallowed ground. Beside the humble grave, the priest then knelt, to tell the story that his heart then felt … Stood guardian over his mother’s sacred head, to honor her who lay among the dead. And then a voice came sweetly from the tomb, my monument was built in my womb. My greatest laurels, greatest praise was won, the hour that thou become my priestly son … Return thou to the desert sands of sin, and win the lost sheep to the fold again…” Father Bill High School Confirmation Program Any high school student in grades 9 through 12 who has not made Confirmation and would like to do so, please contact Sister Laura at 347-207-5020. Sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 pm starting September 18, 2019.

News In our parish, the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is available to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to learn about the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is open to any adult who is unbaptized, or a member of a denomination other than the Catholic Church, or a baptized Catholic who has not completed reception of the Sacraments of Initiation, (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). The formal aspects of the RCIA program will take individuals through various stages of study, prayer, and spiritual formation culminating in baptism (for non- Christians) or full reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. If you know anyone with some personal interest in Catholicism please contact the rectory at (845-561-2264). Informal introductory sessions will acquaint the inquirer with the RCIA process and will be the first step in their journey of faith.
