From the Desk of Fr. Lakmin Silva

I believe that God did not come to remove suffer-ing; He came to fill it with His presence. There are people who feel a lot of resentment about the way life has treated them. They hope that someday they will start to really live by putting all the unpleasant experiences of life behind them. But every attempt to close our eyes to the present, and deny the past, often turns out to be a useless exercise. Why not accept life as it is and understand the simple but beautiful truth of these words: “Life is difficult”? Most of the time, we feel that our “real life” is about to begin but there is some obstacle in the way: something to get through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid... then life will begin. Has it ever occurred to you that these obstacles may be your life? These obstacles--the things that we want to put behind us--they are our life. They are the stuff of which life is made. Why are we afraid of pain? It is part of our life. Why are we afraid of suffering? It is again part of life. The fear of suffering can be worse than the suffering itself. These words of Jesus are so true: “Every day will

have its own cares” (Mt 6:34) and “Was it not ordained that Christ should suffer and then enter into His glory?” (Lk 24:26) As Christians, we are called to accept suffering and pain in life as our master Jesus suffered so much for us. Also, we have

the examples of the heroic lives of the Saints who tread the same path. As we are currently going through this very disturbing period of pandem-ic, we hear some say that 2020 “will be a year pulled from my calendar.” Denial of what we are going through is a kind of fleeing from life and waiting for a better climate and environment in which to live our life; this denial serves as an illusion. It is like waiting for one's retirement in order to write a book. We hardly

come across such books. If you want to write a book, start the first sentence today. Live in the present. Denial of our concrete reality is not going to help us because we will never have a day without cares. By accepting what we are going through, we learn the skills to manage the tensions and cares. There are plenty of

such options yet the best one would be to turn to our faith life and be nourished by our spiritual heritage and traditions.

The Kiss of Jesus

Our Parish Mission Statement The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady

is a Eucharistic community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son,

led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray,

educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life.

“Pain, suffering and sorrow are but

the kiss of Jesus -- a sign that you have come

so close to Him that He can kiss you.”

— St. Teresa of Calcutta

Sacraments and Liturgy

Next Weekend’s Readings 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year A

Reading I: Jeremiah 20: 7-9 The prophet reveals the pains and bother-some elements of his calling. He says he feels “duped” or “tricked” by God. In fulfilling his mission, he faced many persecutors, and yet the urge to preach was irresistible, so he has carried on. Reading II: Romans 12: 1-2 Christian life is supposed to be a sacrifice offered to God. Also, we are not to conform to the passing world, but to the things of the life to come that will last. The Gospel: Matthew 16: 21-27 Peter, only having recently proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, now becomes an unwitting obstacle to the Lord’s mission. How? By remonstrating Jesus when He says His mission involves the cross. Jesus goes on to describe Peter’s discipleship, and ours, as a matter of taking up our own cross, whatever that might be.

243. “How can I ‘love’ people I don’t like?”

In fact, Jesus addressed this very question in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 22. The Jewish leaders didn’t like Je-sus. Jesus made them angry when He accused them of hy-pocrisy and insincerity. They knew He was right, of course. So, some of the Pharisees tried to trick Jesus into saying something illegal in public. They asked Jesus which of the laws was most important. If He encouraged the people to disregard any law, He could be harshly punished. This was an old debate so the lawyer who challenged Jesus only asked in the hope that Jesus would trip Himself up. Instead, Jesus said everything starts and ends with love – love for God and each other. To love God is to love one an-other. They are as inseparable as the beams of the cross. True love of neighbor is measured by how we treat those outside our circle. It means including people we may prefer to exclude or avoid. Jesus loved prostitutes, thieves, lepers, even Pharisees. This is how God loves, and we are to do no less.
