BROUGHT “BACK TO LIFE” THROUGH A PARISHIONER’S SENSE OF STEWARDSHIP A “STEWARD” is often defined as one who safeguards material and human resources, and uses them responsibly. On the local level, some of our parishioners also exercise their stewardship by sharing their TIME, TALENT, and AND TREASURE. For example, there have been occasions when a parishioner may express, [or, perhaps even, take the initiative], to assist in the improving, repairing, purchasing—and in this case—reviving a cherished prayer group, devoted to honoring Our Blessed Mother. With the above in mind, we have been fortunate—especially since-- one of our parishioners, namely, Maureen Kelly expressed an interest to begin the process of planning to “bring back to life” our parish Marian group, which had undergone a brief hiatus. As a faithful member of this group in past years, Maureen perceived that the avid interest, concern, and willingness of the women to meet, again, called for someone to take the initiative. As a result, through Maureen’s ingenuity and perseverance, the Marian Group resumed their monthly meetings on Thursday, May 28th, and will continue to meet on the last Thursday of the month. Our heartfelt “thanks” are due, first, to Annette O’Connell, who—for many years—faithfully assumed leadership of this group, prior to the time of preparing for her move to Nesconset, Long Island. In addition to Maureen Kelly’s affiliation with our parish as a graduate of our parish grade school, and a faithful worshipper, Maureen also volunteers as a Lector for our Sunday and weekday Masses. Therefore, in the name of our parish community, and the members of the Monthly Marian Rosary Group, our sincere “Thanks” to Maureen Kelly for her example of Stewardship—especially for contributing her Time and Talent, and for her success in “BRINGING BACK TO LIFE” a monthly devotion to Our Blessed Mother, which has been a “TREASURED”, and “TRADITIONAL” practice by many.

THE PROPER WAY FOR “THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION”

As we celebrate the Feast of “Corpus Christi”, also known as the Feast of “The Body and

Blood of Christ”, it may be helpful to review the document from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops concerning the proper way for “The Reception of Holy Communion at Mass”.

Beginning with the Communion Procession, it is worth noting that every procession in the liturgy is, in fact, a sign of the Pilgrim Church—the body of those who believe in Christ, on their way to the Heavenly Jerusalem. Similarly, throughout our lives, we--who believe in Christ--are moving--in time--toward that moment when we will be taken, by death, from this world. Then, we will enter into the joy of the Lord in the eternal Kingdom that He has prepared for us.

When we move in procession—particularly the procession to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Communion--we are a sign, a symbol of that Pilgrim Church ‘on the way’. At Christ’s invitation, extended by the priest, acting in Christ’s person, the members of the community move forward to share in the sacred meal, to receive the Body and Blood of Christ—which is the sign and source of their unity ((Happy are they who are called to His supper). In fact, each time we move forward together to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord, we join the countless ranks of all the Baptized who have gone before us—our loved ones—the canonized, and uncanonized, saints down through the ages—who, at their time in history, formed a part of this mighty stream of believers. Therefore, a reverent bow (not a genuflection, nor kneeling) is made before approaching the priest, deacon, or minister of Holy Communion.

In terms of the proper way to receive the Eucharist, those who receive Communion may do so by receiving the Sacred Host either in the hand or on the tongue. The decision should be that of the individual receiving—not the person who is distributing Communion. When one chooses to receive Communion in the hand, the hands should be—first of all—clean. Then, if one is right handed, the left hand should rest on the right hand. The host will then be placed in the palm of the left hand. Next, the host is taken—by the right hand (the one used to feed ourselves)—into the mouth. Should one be left-handed, the manner to receive is reversed—here, the right hand should be resting on the left hand (again, if the left hand is the one used to feed ourselves). It is important to emphasize that one should not “reach out” with their fingers to take the host from the person distributing.

During the distribution of Communion, the priest, or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, speaks to the person approaching with the words: “The Body of Christ”. This formula calls for a response of faith (“Amen”) on the part of the one who receives. The person receiving answers “Amen”. That response is an expression of one’s belief that this small wafer of bread and the wine (now “The Precious Blood”) are now—in reality—THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST THE LORD.

When receiving the Precious Blood from the chalice, the same response (“Amen”) is expressed. It should noted that it is NEVER permissible for a person to dip the host that he, or she, has received, into the chalice (also known as “intinction”).

As we celebrate this sacred feast of THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, may the above help us to do so with a renewed sense of reverence as well as a better understanding concerning the proper way to participate in our RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION .
