“EASTER BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY” In my column posted the weekend of February 24

th, I wrote that

the Season of Lent is my favorite Liturgical Season. I explained that, “this liturgical season always reminds me that its time to get serious

about my commitment to Jesus and the Church, to the practice of my faith and to reset the priorities in my life. How about you?”

I also quoted a commentary that was printed in the Saint Andrew Bible Missal regarding this Season: “Lent is first, last and foremost about baptism. Baptism is about going down with Christ unto death, and being raised up with him to glory. This death and rising can be celebrated only after it has been experienced and lived in the daily fabric of human life. So Lent is about dying to self for the life of others. Lent is about dying to all human supports, which blind us from seeing that true life is in God alone. Lent is as serious as coming to know that the deepest meanings of human life are seen in Jesus. . .”

At all the Masses this Easter Weekend you and I will have the opportunity to renew our Baptismal Promises. Hopefully, our observance of Lent through prayer, fasting, abstinence, works of charity and almsgiving have served as proper preparation for this renewal. These observances are all geared towards shifting our focus away from ourselves and placing it on the Lord who calls us to a greater care for others. “Love one another” is one of the most often command of Jesus to his followers.

For me, the renewal of my baptismal promises is deeply linked to my renewal as a priest. It is always a special moment for me, and my brother priests, when we make this recommitment to the ministerial priesthood at the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday before our Bishop and the People of God. I think that this is probably true for all of you according to your state in life and perhaps even by the work that you do. We are called to made “All things new in Christ,” starting with ourselves and moving out into the wider community. No single celebration of Lent and Easter with the renewal of our Baptismal Promises is going to complete the work of conforming our lives to Christ. That is why this is an annual event. The important thing is that we are sincere in wanting to do this. May the Holy Spirit guide our efforts.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR A WORD ABOUT

FR. AARON I am delighted to share with you that Fr. Aaron’s most recent stay in the hospital last weekend was brief. There were no new signs of a stroke or brain bleed. Therefore, Fr. Aaron continues his recovery while staying with close friends who are taking excellent care of him. It is becoming more and more apparent that Fr. Aaron’s recovery will take place over an extended period of time, months rather than weeks. The next step in his recovery will depend on how he progresses and what his doctors will advise. He is so grateful for everyone’s concern and prayers, especially, to those who have sent him a get-well card or note. In the meantime, please keep Fr. Aaron in your prayers. He asked that, once again, he be remembered to everyone here at St. James Church.

He is risen; He is risen, indeed

This line which we say with great joy today, comes from the Gospel of Luke Chapter 24. On the Road to Emmaus Jesus appears to two followers and asks them what they are discussing. They are astounded that this man has not heard of what has happened to Jesus so they tell him (Jesus, but they don’t know it’s him) all about it. As they walk they have a wonderful discussion and invite Jesus to join them for a meal and rest. At the blessing their eyes are opened and the true nature of Jesus is revealed to them. They cannot contain the joy and they hurry back to tell the Apostles of what has happened. We hope you will also retell the story with great joy to all who will listen.

The Office of

Faith Formation

wishes you

a Joyous Easter!
