A Note from Our Pastor,

I am sorry to begin my remarks this week on a somber note, but given the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis a little over a week ago, and the rallies that have taken place and the violence that

has erupted all over our nation subsequently, I feel that it is im-perative to denounce vigorously not only this criminal act of murder but also the racist underpinnings that lay behind it. In this vein, I want to share with you the following statement made on May 30th by our Archbishop Seán Cardinal O’Malley in re-sponse to this travesty:

In Boston we are physically miles away from Minneap-olis. But no American city, and, really, no American citi-zen is separated from what we have seen this week in viv-id detail. The killing of George Floyd has catalyzed reac-tions across the nation. It has done so because it is not a singular, isolated event.

The killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minne-apolis this week was morally wrong and must be legally prosecuted. To say this is to state the obvious, but it is worth saying because there is a powerful link between the moral and legal dimensions of the killing which has now sparked protest across the country. As a nation we entrust power, even lethal force, to our government and its repre-sentatives in law enforcement. But there are both moral and legal limits to how force can be used. If officers of the law use force in the way millions of us saw in an eight-minute video, then trust in the government, in the law and in the legal system is deeply wounded. That is why the legal prosecution, following constitutional standards, must proceed with care and urgency. The police failed the moral test in George Floyd’s case; now the court will be tested. What is morally wrong must be pursued vigorously by legal standards. That much is lucidly clear.

There is a history here, one documented over decades in print, and now in social media and on television in our homes. The history is clear and tragic: George Floyd was an African American man who died at the hands of a po-lice officer. This is a narrative which has been repeated often and in multiple locations across the country. The history is well documented, but it is known experientially in the African American community in a way that is not widely shared.

The wider community is aware of some cases, but the Af-rican American community lives with the experience and memories of these deaths in an entirely different way. It is a daily reality—one they must speak to their children about and live themselves with some fear.

This gap between different communities in what is one country, one civic community, is the broader reality which this week’s events force any of us to reflect upon.

George Floyd’s death occurred in the midst of the most catastrophic healthcare crisis in our history. We are all threatened by it. But the African American community has been impacted in numbers far beyond its size in the

country. This fact in turn is related to and repeated in other issues of healthcare, employment and housing.

Responding to George Floyd’s death reaches beyond one person to some of what it reminds us about in these larger realities of our nation. In responding to his death, some have used violence. I can understand the frustration but I must strongly oppose those methods. For any of us, the singular voice of Dr. Martin Luther King still rings true: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

As you will note below in this bulletin, our Pastoral Associate Dr. Lisa Gulino is leaving us after serving our parish for over two years. Given the decline in our parish revenue as a result of the impact of COVID-19, Lisa submitted a letter of resignation to me, effective June 30th of this year. I am very grateful for Lisa’s ministry at St. Agatha Parish during her tenure here. Lisa established and chaired the Adult Faith Formation and Spiritual Life Committee, resulting in a number of initiatives for our par-ish, and Lisa herself gave a number of presentations in both these areas, and it was from her leadership of this Committee that our involvement in the Alpha Program occurred, with a large number of participants at the first 2 meetings. Lisa also chaired the Outreach Committee, and worked with the Bereave-ment Team in updating our Funeral Packet. She initiated a Be-reavement Ministry for our parishioners grieving a loss. Lisa was very attentive to many of our homebound parishioners. Very memorable to me were Lisa’s organization and action when we were faced with the departure of our Music Director and Organist just as Advent was beginning in late 2018, and Lisa did so much to enable our Advent and Christmas liturgies to progress as smoothly as they did. Please see “The Sacred Pause” column of this week’s bulletin where Lisa reflects on her ministry here at St. Agatha’s and what her future holds. With you, I am sure, I give thanks for Lisa’s ministry at St. Agatha Parish, and I wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Now, for some good news! We congratulate the members of our parish who are graduating this Sunday from Milton High School in a scaled-down ceremony there. We congratulate all the other parishioners who are also graduating from other high schools this month. To honor them and applaud them for their accomplishments we are holding a Baccalaureate Mass here at St. Agatha’s at next Sunday’s 5pm Mass (June 14th) for High School seniors who have been involved in the life of our parish. For High School Seniors to reserve your spot at this Mass, please email Helen Bornhorst Waring our Youth Minister at hbornhorst@stagathaparish.org.

And, as I mentioned last week, this coming Wednesday evening June 10th the St. Agatha School 8th graders will have their Grad-uation Ceremony and Mass.

This Saturday June 13th at a Noon Mass we’ll finally be able to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucha-rist for the adults who took part in our RCIA program this year. Please remember them in your prayers.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

It’s nice to have the first weekend of public Masses behind us. A tremendous amount of work went into planning for the safe return of parishioners to Mass, and Deacon Dan Sullivan, Beth Peterson and Helen Waring were remarka-ble in their creativity, thoroughness and dogged determina-tion to make things as safe as possible. Thank you also to the many “ambassadors” who volunteered to help greet, orient and direct people. As a point of information, the disinfecting agent we are using is called Bioesque Botani-cal Disinfectant Solution. We are using it after each Mass to disinfect any touch areas throughout the Church includ-ing all pews, stairways and doors. It is a great product that is widely used and we found out why over the weekend. Since it is non-toxic and contains no chlorine, phosphates or harsh chemicals, it is very easy to apply and does not require the use of personal protective equipment. Best of all it kills 99.99% of viruses in one minute, 99.99% of bacteria in two minutes, 99.99% of fungi, mold and myco-bacterium in three minutes. It is still important for you to wear a protective face covering and bring personal sanitiz-er with you, but you can be assured that we are taking proper precautions between Masses to maximize safety.

We are very grateful to those who continue to support the parish financially during these oddest of times. Last week was the first weekend we have had an Offertory collection since March 7th, albeit with baskets at the doors instead of baskets being passed down the pews. People who attended the 4 Masses—a total of 259 people—contributed $5,874. In addition, parishioners who were not able to attend con-tributed $2,198 by mail or drop-off during the week bring-ing the total for the week to $8,072. Finally, $818 was contributed to the second collection for the Seminaries. Thank you for your support.

I am sad to announce that this will be the last Sacred Pause that I will write. Fr . Palardy and Jack have been transparent in their columns about our precarious budget. Parish staff hours were reduced to help with the short-fall of income. As their articles point out, serious examination and decisions will need to be made in the very near future. I am sure these decisions weigh heavy upon them. Not seeing an end to my reduced salary—I took my concerns to prayer. Fr. Palardy accepted my resignation thanking me for my service here at the parish and expressed deep gratitude for my concerns for the parish budget. I am very grateful to Fr. Palardy, Fr. Jay, Fr. Pat, and Fr. Tom for the two plus years that I ministered with them.

I am very blessed insofar as I have wonderful opportuni-ties in teaching online for the University of Notre Dame and on-campus for Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, CT. This opportunity will allow me to con-tinue serving the Church in ministry and teaching.

My heart is full because of my time here at St. Agatha Parish. We have a beautiful Church—but that is only the exterior. What makes St. Agatha Parish so wonderful are the parishioners, priests, pastoral staff, and those who serve on the Finance Council, Parish Council, Bereavement Team, the Catechists, Alpha leaders, Spiritual Growth Committee and the many, many volunteers! You are the heart of St. Agatha parish—this community of faith.

Then there is the group I love to call the “powerhouse pray—ers!” They are the wonderful folks that pray the daily rosary, different novenas throughout the week, the Chaplet of Mercy and attend daily Mass together. This group lifts the heavy burdens of life up in prayer and presents them to God and our Blessed Mother on our behalf! I don’t think there is a need in the wor ld that doesn’t get prayed for by this holy group. World peace, the graces needed for families, for the sick and suffering, our parish, our priests and for future vocations are all remem-bered in their prayers. And their prayers pack a spiritual punch—God smiles upon them and showers grace on our world because of their faithfulness. In your charity, please remember these folks in your prayers as they long to return to their regular schedule.

Brick and mortar hold the physical building of St. Agatha together. You are the LIVING stones built upon the corner Stone--Jesus Christ!

Your faith, your stories, your life, your hopes anddreams, your families, your prayers, your charity are

the life blood that runs through this faith commu-nity which is the Body of Christ.

Your spiritual contributions, service, and spirit is themortar that holds this spiritual building together.

To have been a part of your spiritual journey has been such an honor and blessing!

I think the time of pandemic really concretizes my point that you are the living stones. It was ONLY our Church building that was closed! Not to down play that—it is very important that our doors are open, Christ is present in our tabernacle! The Body of Christ (you and I) must worship our living and holy God together! But for now the Commu-nity of faith—that that is to say—the communion of saints:

gathered in their homes (the domestic church)

praying for one another,

living out their discipleship,

helping others in need—

This is what it means to be church. With that said may we never forget that we need to hunger and long for that time when we can gather once again, all together, and come to the Eucharistic table—to partake in the Bread of Life which is the “source and summit” of our faith. The Eucharist is our sustenance for the journey of life. Jesus Christ truly touches and heals our soul through the sacramental life of the Church. One of the saints says it is easier to live without oxygen that it is to live without the Eucharist.

I thank God that our spiritual paths crossed. I am spiritual-ly richer for my time here because of YOU! May the phrase that I repeated in almost every column resound in your ears always, remember, God loves you! God knows you personally and calls you by name, our origin is from God and our destiny is to return back to God! There is a lot of life in between—may you always stay close to God and our Church. The clergy and the laity alike are co-responsible for the Church’s mission—to spread the Good News and to work for justice! I will miss you all! Thank you for giving me such examples of lived faith! Please remember me in prayer.

St. Agatha Choirs Go Virtual!

The talented and dedicated members of our Traditional and Contemporary Choirs have completed their first-ever virtual choir recording! Each member recorded their own voice singing the well-known hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” and sent it to member John McHugh. John mixed the recordings together and created the final product. You can hear the finished recording at the end of the livestreamed daily Mass, courtesy of Deacon Dan Sullivan.
