Stewardship

A Way of Life

This Week’s Readings

The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism...that people place their gifts, their resources - their selves - at God’s service in and through the Church.”

In Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish whose giving - whether of alms, time or service - will be an expression of gratitude for what the Father has given them.

Abstinence and Fasting

All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are

bound to observe the laws of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

Stations

of the Cross

You are invited to join us in the Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. during the Fridays of Lent to remember Christ’s passion and death by praying the Stations of the Cross.

Lent and

Easter 2018

Weekly

Discussions Parishioners and guests are invited to gather once a week to discuss pertinent topics during the coming seasons of Lent and Easter: to learn and deepen our knowledge in the liturgies and sacraments of the two great seasons. There will be a total of 12 meetings: 5 in Lent and 7 in the Easter Season. (No meeting during Holy Week). The first meeting will be Wednesday, February 21st, 9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Youth Room on the 2nd floor of the Ministry Building. The last meeting will be May 16th. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. There is no need to register; join us as your schedule allows. Each session will feature a 10-15 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of discussions with our moderator, Fr. Seth.

Lenten Parish Project 2018

Our Lenten project this year will once again assist Fr. Seth Awo-Doku’s church in Ghana. Materials explaining the project are available at the doors of the Cathedral. In the envelope you will find a flyer about St. Clement Catholic Church in Nuaso, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This is Fr. Seth’s home village. The church was not completed due to financial difficulties. Your generosity last year helped continue the work and your donation this year will help complete the installation of the roof, concrete floor and vestry. Putting aside some sacrificial offering over the course of Lent and then making your donation will add to the meaning of your contribution as will the prayers you offer for the success of this endeavor. God bless you for your prayers and sacrifices. Checks may be made payable to St. Agnes Cathedral. Please be sure to write “St. Clement, Ghana” on the memo line and include your envelope number.

Communion Guidelines The New York State Department of Health warning about the flu indicates that a bad strain is circulating. In addition, the flu vaccine has not proven as effective as usual. As a result of this and

as a precaution, we ask for your cooperation during this cold and flu season concerning the Precious Blood when it is offered at Mass. If you have cold or possible flu symptoms, please refrain from drinking from the chalice.

For those who have gluten intolerance please know that low-gluten hosts are also available at all Masses. One should stop in the sacristy before Mass to arrange for this type of host to be consecrated. For those who have a medical condition involving gluten that prevents them from taking the host, a chalice with the Precious Blood will be ministered at the 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Masses on Sundays.

February 25 – 27 , 2018

Father Patrick Martin, a native of

Limestone, Maine, has worked

with the “broken” of this world

for over 48 years. His work grew

out of his own “handicap” - legal

blindness since the age of nine.

Now a priest of the Diocese of

Norwich, Connecticut, Father Pat

has preached parish missions on

“God’s Love in our Broken

Lives” in over 1300 parishes

worldwide since 1980 and has

also published a number of books

helping people to live with their

“brokenness.” Father Pat has

developed a series of retreats

helping persons with disabilities

to discover and believe in the

“gift side” of their disabilities:

What can I do for the world with

my disability that I could not if I

were not disabled?

Father Pat will speak at all the

weekend Masses February 24 & 25th.

11 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made to our Parish.

If… 1. You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift 2. Your IRA is a traditional or Roth 3. You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable

distributions

You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a “qualified charitable distribution”. In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to con-tribute $5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover oppor-tunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than Decem-ber 31, 2016 directly to the Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution.

This information is not intended and should not be construed as legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an attorney,

tax advisor or investment professional.

The IRA Charitable

Rollover is back and is

now permanent !

There is no fee for this program, but we would appreciate it if you would call our Outreach Office at (516) 825-0177 to register.

NAMI Queens/Nassau is an affiliate of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a grassroots not-for-profit organization that is committed to building better lives and ensuring dignity and respect for those affected by mental illness through support, education and advocacy. This includes those diagnosed with a mental illness, their family members, relatives and friends, mental health professionals and all those who share NAMI’s vision and mission. As one of the largest affiliates in NYS, we work collaboratively with our state and national organizations and with other stakeholders to educate the public, advocate for legislation, reduce stigma and improve the mental health system.

What is Mental Illness?

Serious brain disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and obsessive compulsive disorder strike one in five people at some point in their lives. These disorders are biological in origin, often have a genetic component, and thanks to the dedication of researchers, we are learning more about them every day. The good news is that they are highly treatable through a combination of medication, support and rehabilitation. The bad news is that many people remain ignorant of brain disorders and do not seek treatment.

Severe Mental Illnesses ARE: Biological brain disorders that interfere with normal brain function; are very common, striking those of all walks of life, regardless of age, race, income, religion or education; are devastating to ill persons and their families.

Severe Mental Illnesses are NOT: Anybody’s fault. (they are not caused by poor parenting or weak character); preventable or curable at this time. Great advances have been made but not enough to prevent or cure illnesses; hopeless! These illnesses present difficult challenges but help is available!

Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Sloman Auditorium, Zucker Hillside Hospital/LIJ, 266th St. and 76th Ave., Glen Oaks, NY. At these meetings, guest speakers address topics of mutual concern to our members. A support group for family and friends of people with mental illness meets beforehand at 6:15 p.m.

To join NAMI Queens/Nassau, or for more information about our programs, please call (516) 326-0797 or (718) 347-7284 or visit our website at www.namiqn.org.

NAMI Queens/Nassau is affiliated with the Zucker Hillside Division of North Shore– Long Island Jewish Health System, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and NAMI/NYS.
