A Message from Father Brian ~ Even in the midst of these drab, gray weeks of February, there seems to be so much going on that it’s hard to decide what to share with you this weekend . . . On Tuesday I received a call from Bishop Barres’ office, ask-ing if he might celebrate the 9:00 Mass on Sunday morning. The Bishop is visiting a few of the parishes in our area, and is especially eager to offer his support to us in the midst of the challenge and concern that Father Tom’s illness brings. We welcome the chief shepherd of our Diocese, and pray that God continue to fortify him as he guides the Catholic family here on Long Island. Bishop, thank you for joining us around the Lord’s altar on the Lord’s Day! Last Sunday, well over a hundred parishioners and staff came together in the school gym to enjoy our annual Appre-ciation Luncheon. Bistro 25 provided some delicious com-fort food for a winter party, and the gym was transformed into a blue, white and silver Winter Wonderland (the snow-people were the best!). As the sign outside the school reads, “We Love Our Volunteers!”—the parish staff and I couldn’t be more grateful for the untold hours that are given to everything from coaching a CYO team to digging in flowerbeds, teach-ing a 4th grade religion class to distributing Holy Commun-ion, sitting on the Finance Committee to organizing the Out-reach food pantry. We are SO profoundly blessed that an ever-growing number of parishioners are eager to support this community with their gifts of time and talent. They are the good stewards without whom our church would be little more than a building, and we thank them from the heart! This Wednesday is of course Ash Wednesday, and the sol-emn beginning of Lent. We begin the most penitential sea-son of the Church year, begging our merciful God to wash over us with his forgiveness, and fortify us in a spirit of pray-er, charity and self-denial. Lent can be an amazingly trans-formative time of year—if it’s approached in the right spirit, and not as a drudgery or a mere obligation. I invite you to take some time before coming to church this Wednesday to ask the Lord’s guidance over the coming weeks . . . how can you best approach Lent at this particular time in your life? What might your heart be most hungry for? What habits, attitudes, or ways of relating do you most need to jettison from your life in order to resemble Jesus more perfectly? A little bit of forethought can be a very profitable thing: ask the Lord in prayer to take your hand and show you how to let this Lent be the most enriching of your life. If you do, it’s

hard to imagine that Easter will be anything less than wondrous! May our patron and brother, St. Lawrence, pray for us. God love you! PS – Be sure to mark you calendar and join us for a Lenten Parish Retreat, led by Passionist Brother Michael Moran from March 23rd-25th (see p. 7).

AN UNFORTUNATE (BUT TEMPORARY) CHANGE

Most of you are well aware that our friend, Father Tom, is under-going treatment for cancer. He no doubt has a long road ahead, during which time we should probably not expect to have him here with us at the parish, at least in a ʺnormalʺ ministerial ca-pacity. Since we are not configured to be a ʺone-priestʺ parish, we need to make a few practical changes for the time being. Those of you who frequent the 9:00 AM Mass on Saturdays know that we typically discontinue it during July and August, since there is often just one full-time priest at the parish. With the same rationale, I have decided that beginning March 7th, we will suspend the 9:00 AM Mass on Saturdays until further no-tice. Saturday is an unpredictable day for a parish priest: some can be rather quiet until mid-afternoon, but if there is a funeral (or two), or a wedding, coupled with confessions and the regular 5:00 PM Mass, there can end up being 3 or 4 Masses in just one day. Canonically, a priest is not supposed to be celebrating the Eucharist that often, nor would it be a wise thing for me to attempt for any extended length of time. I realize the small group who gather for Saturday morning Mass may be disappointed by this news, but you can easily visit one of our neighboring parishes if you choose. For the duration of Fr. Tomʹs illness and treatment, we are essentially becoming a one-priest parish, even with the generous help of visiting clergy (like Bishop Barres today!). I have every intention of re-instituting the 9:00 AM Mass on Saturdays just as soon as Fr. Tom is back with us. Thank you for your understanding, Fr. Brian PS - If you had scheduled a Mass intention for 9:00 AM on a Sat-urday, and have not been contacted by the rectory to reschedule it, please call.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR FATHER TOM

Itʹs been beautiful and very moving to see the outpouring of concern and prayer for Fr. Tom, as he moves through treatment for cancer. We mentioned last weekend that we have purchased a large-format hardcover journal in which we invite parishioners and friends to write brief messages of encouragement to Fr. Tom. Promises of prayers are especially welcome.

The book can be found on a table in the glass-enclosed room in the back of the church. Let’s continue to support Father in the most important of ways—with expressions of care and concern—and to enfold him with our prayers for a complete and speedy recovery.

Passionist Brother Michael Moran presents:

“On the Road: Walking through the Gospels and through Life”

March 23rd– 25th

7:00– 8:00 PM in the church

Monday, March 23rd—The Desert: Going Within Our quick paced, technologically driven world often prevents us from hearing the voice of God telling us we are the beloved. The icon of St. John the Baptist symbolizes the desert, the wild, that inner place where we stop, let go of the noise and distractions, and just be present with Jesus. It can be a difficult thing to do, since we also encounter our fears. But if we go into this metaphorical desert regularly, we can discover how much God loves us and our passion in life as well.

Tuesday, March 24th—The Cross: Extravagant Love In living life and in journeying into the inner desert we experience “wounds of the heart.” Many of us grew up in a Church that emphasized sin, which made many of us fearful of God, believing that we must become perfect before God will love us. Yet God loves us just the way we are, and it is this love that has the power to change us, to heal us if we are open and take the time for it to happen.

Wednesday, March 25th— Memory: Transforming Our Story The story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus is a metaphor for our lives of faith and our walk out of our parish mission/retreat back into our every day lives. The biblical concept of memory is living and dynamic, while the memory the disciples relate to Jesus is static and going nowhere. Jesus takes the two disciples’ static memory of his death and refashions it into a living memory, one that gives them courage, strength and leaves their hearts burning within them. As with the two disciples, what is real and stable in our lives is not what is behind us, in that place from which we are running, but in what we can become as we learn to undergo being set free from having to live defensive-ly.

A free will offering will be collected each evening.

MISSION STATEMENT The parish of St. Lawrence the Martyr is a family of believers, rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, and striv-ing to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action.

As disciples of the risen Lord, and stewards of his ex-traordinary gifts, we seek to grow strong in faith, hope, and love. With the parish as our spiritual home, we commit ourselves to prayer, to teaching the faith, and to serving the needs of the poor.

Nourished by the Word of God and the Church’s sacra-ments, we cherish our rich Catholic heritage as we strive to build a welcoming faith community and pro-claim Christ to the world. We look to our patron, St. Lawrence, who challenges us to see in one another—and in all God’s children—the “treasure of the Church.”

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Our St. Lawrence Columbiettes will be hosting a Pancake Supper

The Church in Need On March 1st, 2020 a collection will be taken for “The Church in Need.” The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is a particular need for help:

• The Church in Central and Eastern Europe - this

collection supports the Church in more than 20 countries that still struggle to recover from Communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation.

• The Church in Latin America - for many in Latin

America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your sup-port for the collection provides lay leadership train-ing, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ.

• The Church in Africa - although the Church in Afri-

ca is growing, many still lack access to basic re-sources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The Solidarity Fund supports pasto-ral projects that foster lasting peace and reconcilia-tion in a continent often marked by division and ten-sion.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE On Saturday, March 21st at 9:00AM the Saint Lawrence Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Defensive Driv-ing Course in the Bethany Center. By completing this course you can save money on your insurance or remove points from your license. It’s good for three years. The cost of the class is $36.00 for those that pay in advance, or $40.00 at the door, and includes a light breakfast & lunch. Sign-in starts at 8:30A.M. Please call 631-317-9027 or email: [email protected] to reserve your spot. The class is limited to 40 registrants. Make checks paya-ble to: St. Lawrence Council # 2458.
