Featured Councillor Councillor Ruth Jacobs was born in London and spent a happy childhood there. She started her working life as a hairdresser and make-up artist and worked with many stars including the opera singer Elizabeth Schwarkzkopf as well as others from popular culture including James Robertson Justice. Later she became a member of the Civil Service and for 20 years she worked with single, homeless men who led an unsettled way of life who had drink , drugs and psychiatric disorders. In 1988 she married David, had two children and took up antique collecting which she soon turned into a profitable hobby: She became an antique dealer and for a number of years Ruth and David could be found most weekends at antique fairs. Those years passed and for a while Ruth did antique talks on antique jewellery and still does on occasions. Once the children had left home we decided to move down to Weston-Super-Mare which we had visited on many occasions. While in Gloucester I had become involved in local politics and when I came to Weston-Super-Mare I decided to stand for the District Council and was elected in 2015 to serve as Councillor for Wick St Lawrence and St Georges. In Weston-super-Mare it gives us great pleasure to walk and sit on the promenade looking out to sea and my ward gives me a wonderful contrast between the very rural Wick St Lawrence and the vast housing estate which is St Georges. I am immensely proud of my ward and hope my residents know they can contact me when they see me in the ward -where I try to be a couple of times a week - or by email or by telephone. I have dealt with a number if issues including the major challenge of lowering the drains raised in Walworth Avenue St Georges and preventing a barn being built that would have been to the detriment of the village of Wick St Lawrence. I am also the port of call if rubbish has not been collected! At present I am dealing with an unpleasant 'smell' which regularly makes its presence felt in parts of Wick St Lawrence. I am on numerous committees at the council including the Health and Overview Scrutiny panel of which I am the Vice-Chairman and I am also a member of the planning committee. I am also the North Somerset Council representative on the Council for the Protection of Rural England. I am often seen in town talking and trying to help the homeless, given the work I used to do, my experience and expertise can be of importance. When the next election comes around in May 2019 I look forward to representing Wick St. Lawrence and St Georges for another 4 years. Do please contact me of you have a problem where as your councillor I can help either at: Ruth,[email protected] OR [email protected] or 07909124059 or 01934 812214

Featured School: Hello, St Georges My name is Nina Walker and I am delighted to say that I am the new Headteacher at St Georges Church School and a member of the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust. I love being a Headteacher, I feel like the head of a big family and as with all families my vision is that all members, adults and children reach their full potential in all areas of life.

I truly believe that in Church Schools everyone is bound by deep rooted beliefs and values which allow us to celebrate their uniqueness and gives us the confidence to explore the opportunities and challenges that constantly happen in education. My vision is for a diverse and experience filled school, which values our similarities and celebrates our differences. I passionately believe in educating and recognising the achievements of people as a whole.

The most important part of my personal life is my family, I spend much of my time caring for my parents and enjoying my now grown up children. My favourite place is the beach, where I find my own peace and time for reflection. I love to eat, travel, walk and swim.

I was born in North London, but brought up in Haworth in Yorkshire, an inspiring and mysterious place through a child’s eyes, surrounded by wild moors, cobbled streets, classic literature and steam trains. There followed a eighteen years in the midlands working in accounts and bringing up a family, but for the last fourteen years I have lived near Ely in Cambridgeshire, where I have taught and lead in a range of schools, most recently as Headteacher of another Church school for the Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust.

I was a late starter as a teacher, after nearly ten years of being a stay at home mum (my best ever job), my children’s Headteacher told me to go to University and qualify as a teacher, as I already spent a lot of my week volunteering and on the Governing Body. So at thirty-nine I headed off as a mature student to spend three years taking my degree. At the end of the course I moved with my family to a small holding on the Norfolk border and began my teaching career. I still see myself as a teacher first and am always eager to be back in the classroom, but I am fortunate as a Headteacher that my passion for education allows me to support others in providing high quality education and care to all members of our school community and beyond.

Now, fourteen years on, the children grown up and established in their own careers in London, I have moved to beautiful Somerset and my dream home overlooking the sea. I am so excited to start my journey with the St Georges family, please feel free to visit the school, join me for a coffee and let us share our wonderful school and community with you. Kind regards Nina

Mead Vale Church, Redwing Drive After the glorious summer that we have had and as the nights start to draw in, we have some events to look forward to at Mead Vale Church this September:- On Sunday 2 September it’s “Back to School Sunday”, when we think about our children and young people returning to school. Some going to new schools, some starting Secondary School, all of them going into a new year. This can be a very daunting and uncertain time for them, we like to encourage them and pray for them before they go back, they are all invited to wear all or some items of their school uniform and bring their school bags to show us. On this same Sunday COSMIC (Children on Sunday meeting in Church) starts again, after giving the COSMIC leaders and helpers a well deserved break over the summer . We don’t have a Coffee Morning during August so we look forward to our next one on Saturday 15 September, 10am – 11.30am in the Church Centre. A good opportunity to catch up with one another over refreshments. Please join us. On Saturday 29 September we have our Harvest “outreach” from 10am – 12noon. When we will be handing out a “Harvest gift” to people outside the Church. We shall also take this opportunity to talk to people and let me know that the gift is from their local Church which, is here in the Community for them and invite them to our “Harvest Breakfast the next day. On Sunday 30 September we have a Church family breakfast at 10am, followed by our Harvest Service for all the Family, when we will be taking up a food offering for the Food Bank. Please do join us. We are excited to be opening up our café again on Wednesday the 5 September! Its been good to have a break over the summer and the ‘Grief Café’ went down well over the holiday period. There is a slightly new look to the café this term– a

fresh new start bringing a range of delicious cakes and biscuits, good company and children’s and adults activities ( if you want them.) Most of all we pride ourselves on being a place where people of all ages and opinions can come and meet and get together, It’s the ideal place to be if you are at a lose end, or just feeling a bit lonely– there is always someone to chat too. The café opens at 2.30 and closes around 4.30. Usually school finishes we becomes very busy with families who are hungry ad wanting something to do! We love meeting new visitors and old friends and we are always delighted when someone brings a new person along for the first time! We have a small (but highly talented!) team of brilliant people who set up, serve and chat and make sure that whoever comes along and whatever their age is, that they feel welcomed! We have been given some generous donations which has enabled us to buy some new tables and equipment and for this we are very grateful! We don’t have a price list but do ask for people to give a donation towards the cost of their refreshments– this is how we survive! Some weeks we have themes, just for a bit of fun and we also will be doing some special café events leading up to Christmas! Check our website and the notice board in the church for more information! We look forward to meeting you soon! Paul and the Café@StMartins Team.

Postcards of Worle I recently decided to have a good look through my old albums and came upon a small collection of postcards, four of which had pictures of Worle. Three of them feature an image of St. Martin’s Church. Of course, this is partly because our parish church is such a beautiful building, but it also says something about the central part it played in village life during the 20

th century.

I’m sure that all of them will be familiar to many of you, but I think this one, in particular, is worth another look. The picture has been tinted and the result is very attractive. The trees surrounding the Church have not been lopped at this time and the graves in the lower church yard are marble white and in pristine condition. This card was posted from Worle on July 22nd 1907. The writer, named Olive, lived at Ivy Lodge. I can find no sign of her on 1901 or 1911 censuses, but that may be largely because we have no surname. Ivy Lodge was a well-to-do household and Olive was almost certainly in service there. If so, she helped to run the house for Fanny and Emma Parsley, single ladies whose parents had long since died and who were 63 and 59 respectively. As single women the sisters are rarely mentioned in the newspaper reports and

minutes of the time, but they probably kept in touch with the outside world via

their nephew and nieces, who lived with them at the Lodge. These young

relations carried the surname Burton and had all been born in Gloucestershire,

but had moved to Somerset to reside with the maiden aunts. Frederick Burton

was 16 in 1901 and his sisters, Fanny and Frances were 13 and 10 years old. I

suspect that Frederick would have been dreadfully spoilt by all his female

relations – or maybe driven crazy by them. The three young people had been

blessed with ‘Vandeleur’ as a middle name to honour some very interesting

relations. The maiden aunts were comfortably situated, being described as

‘living on own means’ in the census, and we must assume that they were content

to care for the next generation.

Page 11: THE PARISH OF WORLE · Saturday 23 November 7.30pm Richard Lennox and Friends in Concert in St Martin’s Church Saturday 1 December 10.00am Sanctuary Morning in Wick St Lawrence

Ivy Lodge in days gone by was considered a home for rich of the village. It boasted a Croquet lawn, which I suspect was the only one in Worle, and would have been quite an attraction for young friends of the Burtons.

The card is addressed to Miss Eva Roper at 2 Grove Road W-s-Mare. Olive signs off with four kisses. It would be good to know if Eva and Olive were friends or sisters. I know nothing more of Olive, but Eva Roper seems to have travelled to Canada in 1911 and then returned to Britain and was married in 1923 to a chap called Sidney Marshall.

There is a lovely old postage stamp of Edward VII still intact on the card and it was purchased from Worle Post Office, run at that time by W.T.C. Dunning. Much later the business was handed down to Norman Dunning, who many of us will recall.

It is remarkable how much we can learn from one small communication between friends. Have a look in the attic or the back of a drawer next time it is pouring with rain. You never know what you might find. Raye Green, Worle History Society www.worlehistorysociety.net Come and join us at Worle Community Centre on the 1

Ability Sunday – September 9 Churches and communities are richer when everyone is taking part. Ability Sunday, organised by charity Livability, is an opportunity to celebrate the God-given gifts of disabled people. Without the participation of disabled people, we are depriving the church of the gifts God intended for the benefit of His church. Create places of welcome: Ability Sunday is where disabled people are welcomed and supported to express themselves and build confidence, offering opportunities for friendship and communal experience. Celebrate gifts: Ability Sunday is a day when churches rejoice in the crucial contribution that disabled people make to the life of the church and start the journey to include disabled people in the worship, work and life of the church. Connect with community: Inclusion and community is on the heart of every church. Beyond the day of Ability Sunday, participant churches can access ongoing training and resources to support disabled and vulnerable people get more connected with their local community Harvest Sunday – September 30 Join us as we recognise God’s creative power in the food we eat and give thanks for the meals we consume every day. A real treat was had by the Parish of Worle in July when Bishop

Derek and his wife Evelyn returned to the area after many years

to pay a visit.

Bishop Derek joined St Martin’s church for communion on

Thursday morning and were joined by Year 6 from Worle Village

Primary, who sang their hearts out to ‘One more step along the

world I go’. This was particularly poignant for them as they

prepared to move on to secondary school.

Bishop Derek and Evelyn then shared stories with St George’s

School before rejoining a group of others from Zambia who were

celebrating with the Bath and Wells Diocese 40 years of

friendship!

We have so much to learn from each other and will continue to

pray and support one another as we thank God for his continued

faithfulness.

Page 17: THE PARISH OF WORLE · Saturday 23 November 7.30pm Richard Lennox and Friends in Concert in St Martin’s Church Saturday 1 December 10.00am Sanctuary Morning in Wick St Lawrence

Bishop of Taunton—Ruth Worsley came to St John’s Weston Super

Mare, on 30 August to confirm nine candidates from around the

Deanery.

It was a wonderful celebration!

Bishop Ruth explained to everyone that at confirmation each person

who has discovered the love of God has their calling to love God

confirmed. Their baptism promises are renewed and Bishop Ruth

challenged each person to think about how they were going to pass on

the love of God!

Congratulations to Sarah, Jen, John and Maureen from Worle parish.

Every first Sunday at 6pm, there is a Christian Healing Service held at

St Martin’s on Church Road.

As Christians we believe that God want us to be free, whole and enjoy

life in all its fullness. Many live with pain and struggles. At our healing

services we worship a God who knows and loves us, who knows what

we’re going through and wants to draw near to us.

Each service will have a theme linked to healing and we will offer the

laying on of hands for anyone who would like to be prayed for. All are

welcome!

proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery

of sight to the blind, to set the

oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.

Bell Ringing within the Parish Bell ringing is a stimulating and enjoyable past-time enjoyed by people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds where you never come to the end of discovering something new whether it’s extending your skills, visiting other churches to ring or making friends and enjoying the social life. Also, and most importantly, an integral part of the church’s life - calling people to worship; celebrating weddings, local and national events and also rung in times of sorrow. Ringers are committed to ensure that this happens and over the years local people have commented on how much they enjoy listening to the bells and miss them when they are not rung, especially on Sundays. Within the Parish of Worle there are two rings of bells - at St. Martin’s and St. Lawrence. Each of these churches have six bells, but are very different. The heaviest bell (tenor) at St Lawrence weighs 15cwt while at St Martin’s it’s 9cwt. The former are rung from the ground floor and the later from part-way up the tower. Some of the local ringers learnt when they were teenagers (or younger) whilst others have only been ringing for a few years and learnt in the second half of their life. If you are one of those people who hear the bells, know some of the ringers or just curious but have never ventured to find out what actually goes on then please make the time to come and discover - you will always be welcomed and remember it is not difficult to learn to ring. Like all activities, it takes time and practice to learn the basic skills of how to ring a bell safely and with ease, but once learnt you will be transported into the world of the likes of Plain Bob, Reverse Canterbury, Grandsire, Stedman, Cambridge amongst others . You will always be welcomed to visit on a practice night - Thursdays at St. Martin’s and/or the 2nd and 4th Friday evenings at St. Lawrence - either just turn up or phone beforehand (contacts on back page).
