THE PASSOVER SEDER
1Corinthians 5:7“Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:”
PASSOVER POINTS TO CHRIST
Passover is rich with spiritual significance and symbolism. For Christians to fully appreciate
God's purpose in Passover, it needs to be seen and interpreted in three dimensions:
1. Historically: Passover is remembrance of God's supernatural deliverance of the
children of Israel from Egyptian bondage.
2. Prophetically: The Passover Seder service teaches us about the first and second
coming of Yeshua/Jesus. In the steps prior to eating the Passover meal, the Passover
Seder focuses on the events of Yeshua's/Jesus's first coming, primarily His death,
burial, and resurrection. Following the Seder meal, you are taught about the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit, judgment of the nations during the tribulation, and the
future 1,000 year Messianic Age.
3. Individually: Passover instructs Believers about their personal relationship with
God. It shows Believers how to grow in spiritual maturity as they seek to serve God
in their daily lives. Believers must focus on Christ and their faith in the redemptive
work of Christ. His shed blood, death, burial and bodily resurrection and yielding to
the power source of the Holy Spirit.
THE BOOK OF EXODUS MEANS “EXIT” “DEPARTURE”
If you would read Exodus Chapter 1 you will see the story unfold that at
first Israel stay was fruitful and increased abundantly and became
exceedingly mighty. But new kings arose in Egypt and afflicted them for
nearly 400 years. Read: Ex. 1:14 “And they made their lives bitter with
hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the
field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.”
Ex. 2:23 - 25 “And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of
Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage,
and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with
Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children
of Israel, and God had respect unto them.” Ex. 5:22, 23 “And Moses
returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil
entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me? For since I came
to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither
hast thou delivered thy people at all.” Ex. 6:1 - 8 “Then the LORD said
unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a
strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive
them out of his land. And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am
the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by
the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to
them. And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the
land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.
And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the
Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring
you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of
their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with
great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to
you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which
bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will
bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I
am the LORD.” God did redeem His people and this is the feast of the
Lord that He commanded them to do. Ex. 12:11 “And thus shall ye eat it;
with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your
hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.” Ex.12:14
“And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a
feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by
an ordinance for ever.” Ex. 12:17 - 24 “And ye shall observe the feast of
unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out
of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your
generations by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the fourteenth
day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and
twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no leaven
found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even
that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a
stranger, or born in the land. Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your
habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread. Then Moses called for all the
elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb
according to your families, and kill the passover. And ye shall take a
bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the
lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none
of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the
LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the
blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over
the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to
smite you. And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to
thy sons for ever. And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land
which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye
shall keep this service.”
PASSOVER MEANS IN THE HEBREW WORD “pesah” MEANS “to pass”
or “hover over”.
THE PASSOVER SEDER (Set Order)
The Candles that are lit: NUMBERS 6:24 - 26 “The LORD bless thee,
and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious
unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee
peace.”
ALL: JOHN 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the
light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but
shall have the light of life.” Leader: Read: Eph.5:8 - 14 “For ye were
sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of
light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and
truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship
with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a
shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But
all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for
whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou
that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
2Cor 4:4 “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them
which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the
image of God, should shine unto them.”
We being in Christ should have our light shining before men. Matt 5:14 -
16. “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a
candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your
light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father which is in heaven.”
SING: Heavenly Sunlight: Walking in sunlight all of my journey; Over the
mountains, through the deep vale; Jesus has said, “I’ll never forsake thee”, Promise
divine that never can fail. Heavenly sunlight, heavenly sunlight, Flooding my soul with
glory divine: Hallelujah, I am rejoicing, Singing His praises, Jesus is mine. Shadows around
me, shadows above me, Never conceal my Savior and Guide; He is the Light, in Him is no
darkness; Ever I’m walking close to His side.
KADDESH: THE FIRST CUP (SANCTIFICATION):
It was a Historical day! It was a day that was Sanctified by God for the
Jews as a Holy Day. Ex. 12:14 “And this day shall be unto you for a
memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your
generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.”
REMEMBER: Sanctification of the believer: In position, believers are
eternally set apart from sin unto God by redemption. Heb. 10:10 “By the
which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all.” Positionally, believers are “saints” and “holy”. In
experience believers are being sanctified by the work of the Holy Spirit
exclusively through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross
revealed in the truth from the Scriptures. Rom. 8:2 “For the law of the
Spirit in Christ Jesus has freed us from the law of sin and death.
Jn. 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Read
these when you have time. 2 Cor. 3:18, Eph. 5:26, Rom. 6:1 - 22
The pouring of the juice and filling up the cup represents that Jesus
Christ filled your cup to overflowing with all the promises and
privileges that are in Him. Read: Eph. 1:2 - 12 “Blessed be the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in
him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without
blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of
children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his
will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us
accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he
hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made
known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure
which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness
of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which
are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we
have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the
purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.”
As we fill each others cup it reminds us that we are KINGS before
God. Rev. 1:6 “And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his
Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”
Rev. 5:10 “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we
shall reign on the earth.” Rev. 20:6 “Blessed and holy is he that hath
part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but
they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a
thousand years.”
Pour the Juice
WHEN YOU DRINK THE JUICE: Historically Passover celebrates
freedom of the children of Israel from the bondage of slavery in
Egypt.
BUT as a believer in Christ we drink the juice to celebrate our
freedom from the condemnation and bondage of sin. This is a
guarantee by Faith in Christ: Read (when you have time) Romans 6 –
8. Rom. 6:11“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto
sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The right hand raised is a symbol of strength: Eph. 3:16 “That he
would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened
with might by his Spirit in the inner man;”
Lift the cup: John 12:32 “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will
draw all men unto me.” We acknowledge His death on the cross and His
resurrection to remember that we were drawn to Christ by the Holy Spirit.
Before drinking the first cup: John 15:1 “I am the true vine.”
ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has
kept us alive and preserved us and has given us many promises in Christ
Jesus.
DRINK THE FIRST CUP
U-R’CHATZ: Washing of the Hands
Priests in the temple had to wash their hands in water before entering the
temple to minister before their God.
We need not wash our hands in water because we have been washed
in the blood of the Lamb and now WE ARE PRIESTS AND KINGS
BEFORE GOD. Rev. 5:10 “And hast made us unto our God kings and
priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” Rev. 20:6 “Blessed and holy is
he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath
no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign
with him a thousand years.” 1Pt. 2:5 “Ye also, as lively stones, are built
up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices,
acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1Pt. 2:9 “But ye are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye
should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness
into his marvellous light:”
We need not wash our hands in water because: The living water is
the Word of God. The living water can live in our hearts and cleanse
our way and live an active faith in God from our HEARTS. Jesus
Christ is the living Word. Eph. 5:26, 27 “That he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it
to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such
thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Jn. 4:13, 14 “Jesus
answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst
again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall
never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of
water springing up into everlasting life.”
KARPAS: Eating a vegetable dipped in salt water.
Hyssop was used to dip into the basin of blood then applied to the
door posts and lintel of the Hebrew dwelling, house: Ex. 12:22 “And
ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason,
and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the
bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the
morning.” Hyssop was a plentiful, low growing plant used in medicinal
and culinary usages. Hyssop is a type of humbleness, repentance. It is our
first step in receiving Christ as Savior, coming to Him with a humble
repentant heart and putting our faith in His blood. We apply the blood to
the door of our house heart with repentance towards God and faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ. Read: Acts 20:20, 21“And how I kept back nothing
that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you
publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also
to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus
Christ.”
Green Parsley dipped into the salt water: Why the green vegetable and salt water?
The salt water symbolizes the tears shed by the slaves in Egypt. It reminds us of the
tears we have shed because of the sins that we have committed against God and
others. It represents the tears shed by Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and also
reminds us that believers should be the salt of the earth. Matt. 5:13 “Ye are the salt
of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of
men.”
The green parsley represents resurrection and life. It recalls the journey of the
children of Israel as they passed through the Red Sea to emerge alive on the other
side. It reminds us that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Spiritually, the Believer
remembers that after accepting Jesus into their heart and life, they experienced a
newness of life.
JESUS CHRIST GIVES US NEW LIFE: Romans 6:4, 5 “Therefore we are
buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if
we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the
likeness of his resurrection:”
Before eating the Parsley: ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God,
King of the universe who creates the fruit of the earth.
Dip the parsley in the salt water and eat.
YACHATZ: Breaking of the middle matzah.
The matzatosh bag holds the three pieces of Matzot.
Taking the middle of the three pieces of Matzot, BRAKE it into two
pieces. Wrap the larger of the two pieces of Matzot inside the napkin
and hide it somewhere and will be explained later. The smaller of the
two pieces is placed back between the two whole Matzot and placed it
down.
3 pieces of Matzah- there are 3 explanations- Jews believe it is Abraham,
Jacob, Isaac, or the Priests, Levites, Israel, Christians believe it is God the
Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit the Trinity.
Breaking of the Bread: Jesus’ broken body. Is. 53:4 - 7 “Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him
stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep
have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the
LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he
was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the
slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not
his mouth.”
MAGGID: The telling of the Exodus story: Ex. 13:8 “And thou
shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which
the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.”
Read if time: Exodus 12:1 - 14 “And the LORD spake unto Moses and
Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the
beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak
ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this
month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of
their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for
the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according
to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make
your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the
first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye
shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole
assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And
they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the
upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat
the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with
bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with
water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance
thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that
which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. And thus
shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your
staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.
For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the
gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. And the blood
shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see
the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to
destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. And this day shall be unto
you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout
your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.”
This is a picture of us telling the Great story of redemption. Tell our
children our families everyone of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Read: Rom. 10:14 - 17 “How then shall they call on him in whom they
have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have
not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall
they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the
feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of
good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith,
Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and
hearing by the word of God.”
Before the story is told: On the Seder plate: You see the roasted egg
and leg of lamb. It is removed from the Seder plate because there is no
temple in Israel. We need to pray for the Nation of Israel to be saved.
They do not need a lamb they need Christ. Invite all to come to eat at the
table. Come to Christ!!!!!
THE CHRISTIAN must remember what the Lord said of the great
supper: Luke 14:15, 23 “And when one of them that sat at meat with him
heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in
the kingdom of God. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the
highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be
filled.”
THE INVITATION to eat: ALL: Rev. 19:9 “And he saith unto me,
Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the
Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.”
The second cup is poured: The cup of Affliction. Historically the Israelites were
afflicted in Egypt. But later redeemed, delivered by the divine providence of God.
We to are afflicted by the condemnation of sin but are redeemed by the Blood of the
Lamb.
At this time it was tradition that four questions were asked by four sons. The
questions were: On all other nights we eat Chametz/Leavened Bread and
Matzah/Unleavened Bread; on this night, only Matzah/Unleavened Bread? On all
other nights we eat any kind of vegetable; on this night only Maror/Bitter Herbs? On
all other nights we are not required to dip even once; on this night we dip twice? On
all other nights we eat sitting or reclining; on this night only reclining? Believers
should be living a holy, prayer full, Bible studying life so that your children would
ask you questions about the Bible, God, Our Lord Jesus Christ and other biblical
issues.
The second cup is lifted: Historically the Jews now would sing a song of joy of how
they were afflicted but now delivered. The Christian being delivered should be
singing a song of Joy.
Sing: Bulah Land: Far away the noise of strife upon my ear is falling;
Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand; Doubt and fear and things of earth
in vain to me are calling; None of these shall move me from Beulah Land.
I’m living on the mountain, underneath a cloudless sky, I’m drinking at the fountain
that never shall run dry; Oh, yes! I’m feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply,
For I am dwelling in Beulah Land.
The second cup is placed back on the table.
Historically remembering the Ten Plagues: Dip your finger in the juice
and then let it drop on your plate to remember historically how God
delivered the Israelites from the plagues. Now dip your finger again and
drop it on your plate and remember the blood that was shed for you to
spare you from the coming Great Tribulation and from the condemnation
of sin. God spared the Israelites from suffering the 9 plagues but the 10th
plague they had to, by faith, apply the blood of the lamb to the door posts
and lintel. God will deliever us from what will happen in the Great
Tribulation (The Rapture of the Body of Christ) and has redeemed us from
the condemnation of sin through faith in the blood of the Lamb the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Sing: Nothing But the Blood. What can wash away my sin, nothing but
the blood of Jesus, what can make me whole again, nothing but the blood
of Jesus, Oh precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow, no other
fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.
DAYEINU: It is Enough
The word Dayinu: Remember how great God is!!! What He has done
for you and me!! He is your Redeemer your deliverer! Count your
blessings in the Name of the Lord!!
The Passover sacrifices that our fathers ate at the time that the Holy
Temple was still standing, what was the reason for it? It was to signify
that the Holy One, blessed be He, passed over the houses of our fathers in
Egypt, for it is written: Ex. 12:13, 27. “And the blood shall be to you for
a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will
pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I
smite the land of Egypt. That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD's
passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt,
when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people
bowed the head and worshipped.” Should we not bow our heads and
worship our Savior He shed His precious blood for us and God has
justified us in the blood of the Lamb. 1Pt. 1:18, 19 “ Forasmuch as ye
know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and
gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and
without spot:”
The middle matzah is removed form the matzahtash and held up all to
see.
This is the piece of Matzah that Jesus said: Luke 22:19 “And he took
bread, gave thanks and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my
body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me."
Put down matzah. Lift and hold the cup up and recite.
ALL: Therefore, out of spirit and truth from the heart we will praise,
laud, glorify, exalt, acclaim, bless, extol, and give respect to Him who
planned before the foundation of the world to come down from Heaven to
redeem, justify, sanctify, adopt, regenerate, glorify, and reconcile us. He
has brought me forth from slavery to liberty, from sorrow to joy, from
mourning to festival, from darkness to bright light, and from bondage to
redemption. Therefore, let me recite a new song before Him. Hallelujah!"
Set your cup down: Sing: O Victory In Jesus: I heard an old, old
story, how a Savior came from glory, how He gave His life on Calvary, to
save a wretch like me, I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood
atoning, then I repented of my sin and won the victory, O Victory in Jesus
my Savior forever, He sought me and bought me with His redeeming
blood, He love me ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him, He
plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.
Lift the cup and say the following blessing.
The Christian Prayer and blessing: ALL: Heavenly Father we praise
you for our redemption in Christ Jesus our Lord. You took the blood His
precious blood and washed us clean. No more condemned, but justified in
your sight. Thank you for all the precious privileges and promises in
Christ.
Drink the second cup: The cup of Affliction.
This is the cup of wrath and affliction that spiritually Jesus part took
of in Garden of Gethesame. Lk. 22:42 “Saying, Father, if thou be
willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be
done.”
RACHTZAH: WASHING OF THE HANDS: We need not wash
our hands with water. We are washed by the blood of the Lamb and the
water of the Word of God as we saw earlier.
MOTZI: Thankfulness for what the Lord has given us.
ALL: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who
brings forth the bread from the earth.
MATZAH: Unleaven bread.
ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has
set us apart from sin unto You oh Lord and have given us Unleaven Bread
which is the Bread of Life Jesus Christ to feed upon.
MATZAH: UNLEAVENED BREAD: Read: Ex. 12:8 “And they
shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and
with bitter herbs they shall eat it.” Ex. 12:17 - 20 “And ye shall observe
the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your
armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in
your generations by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the
fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until
the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be
no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is
leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel,
whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. Ye shall eat nothing
leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.”
Remember that Matzah has a bland taste.
Leaven is a picture of sin. Unleaven is a picture of separation of the world
and sin. If you look at the unleaven bread you will see it striped and
pierced. Unleaven is also a picture of purity. Our Savior was sinless, pure
and was striped and pierced for us.
JESUS CHRIST AND UNLEAVENED BREAD: Read: John 6:31 -
33 “Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave
them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily,
I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father
giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which
cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.” 6:35 And
Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall
never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. 6:48 “I am
that bread of life.” 6:50-58 “This is the bread which cometh down from
heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread
which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live
for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for
the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying,
How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and
drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth
my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the
living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me,
even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from
heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of
this bread shall live for ever.” 2 Cor. 5:21 “For he hath made him to be
sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of
God in him.” 1 Pt. 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body
on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by
whose stripes ye were healed.” Is. 53:4, 5 “Surely he hath borne our
griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten
of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed.” 1 Cor. 5:6 - 8 “Your glorying is not
good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge
out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are
unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore
let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice
and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
The bland taste of Matzah: ALL: Isa. 53:2 “For he shall grow up
before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath
no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty
that we should desire him.” Before we were born again we had no desire
that we should know Him.
Break off a piece of Matzah and eat:
MAROR: Eating Bitter Herbs:
Ex. 12:8 “And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened
bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.” Romaine lettuce and horseradish—
Chazeret. Romaine lettuce first tastes sweet, only later to become bitter. The sweet
symbolizes your Egyptian, or worldly experiences. At first, they are fun and exciting.
It isn't until later you realize your sinfulness. In the bitterness, you are reminded of
your bondage to sin. Chazeret becomes bitter if it remains in the ground to long
without water. This is a picture of our lives if we live to long without the Word of
God. Read: 2Tim. 3:15 - 17 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy
scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of
God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
The Horseradish is a reminder of the bitterness for being in bondage to sin.
Eat the romaine lettuce first: Now dip the lettuce in the horseradish
and eat.
KORECH: Eating a sandwich of matzah, maror and charoset.
ALL: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has
set us apart by Your commandments, and has commanded us to eat Maror.
ALL: They shall eat it with Matzah and Maror. Ex. 12:8 “And they shall
eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with
bitter herbs they shall eat it.” Again we see the sweetness and the bitterness
in bondage to the world and sin and the promises and privileges in Christ Jesus.
Matzah and Maror eaten together: Taking the 3rd piece of Matzah
and dip in the Maror and eat: Now take the Matzah and dip in the
Charoset and eat. Now take the Matzah and dip in the Maror and
Charoset and eat.
What is the spiritual meaning of eating Matzah and Maror together? We
all have bitter experiences in our lives. The message God is
communicating to you is His desire for you to press through the bitterness
(as symbolized by the horseradish) to experience the sweetness (as
symbolized by the Charoset) that He promises you in His Word. The
horseradish represents the trials and tribulations which come into your life.
Like the Horseradish, many trials and tribulations are so bitter they make
you cry. If you allow these trials and tribulations to make you bitter
toward God, you will never experience the sweetness of God's deliverance
for your life. Do not let your trials and tribulations cause you to have
bitterness towards God, but instead press through them with God's help,
you will taste and experience the fullness of His promises contained in His
Word for you. Trusting in God, and His Messiah Yeshua, while standing
on the promises of God in His Word is your solution for being victorious
over the trials and tribulations in your life.
Sing: Standing on the Promises. Standing on the promises that cannot
fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word
of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God. Standing,
standing, Standing on the promises of God my Savior; Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
Read: 1Pt.1:5 - 7 “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice,
though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold
temptations. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than
of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto
praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:”
SHULCHAN ORECH: Eating the festive meal.
Zeroa: In Jewish traditional Passover the Zeroa represents the Passover
Lamb which is sacrificed. The bone is roasted and scorched simulating
the Passover sacrifice that is roasted. (Exodus 12:9) The roasted bone is
known as a shank bone. They also use the roasted egg representing a
second lamb that was eaten. There is no Temple in Jerusalem today;
therefore, there is no sacrifice, and there is no lamb to be slain. For this
reason, you have only a remembrance of the lamb which is slain. The
shankbone on the Seder plate represents this remembrance. There is NO
NEED for a lamb for the Lamb of God has come and sacrificed Himself
for the sins of the World!!!!! Pray for the lost Nation of Israel that God
would open the hearts of the lost ones and receive the Lord Jesus Christ.
THE PASSOVER LAMB: Read Ex. 12:3 - 9 “Speak ye unto all the
congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall
take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a
lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him
and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of
the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the
lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye
shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up
until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the
congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of
the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of
the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that
night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they
shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with
fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.” Ex. 12:21
“Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw
out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the
passover.”
Ex. 12:46 “In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought
of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone
thereof.”
JESUS CHRIST IS OUR PASSOVER LAMB:
1 Corinthians 5:7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a
new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is
sacrificed for us:”
Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast; as
you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
The Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, was a perfect specimen.
1Pt. 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot.” He was born of the virgin Mary; by the Holy
Spirit, born without sin. He was observed for 33 years to make sure that
no blemish would develop in Him. He never sinned. Christ kept all the
commandments!! Jn. 8:46 “Which of you convinceth me of sin?”
Heb. 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with
the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are,
yet without sin.” This perfect lamb was to be killed in the evening. The
Jewish evening was from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. This marked time at
first seems to have little significance until we read these words found in
Matt. 27: 46 “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice,
saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken me?” The ninth hour is 3:00 p.m. Jewish time. It was
at this very moment that Jesus Christ became sin for us. Jn. 19:33 “But
when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake
not his legs.” Ex. 12:8 “And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast
with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.”
Fire in the Bible is the perfect symbol for God's judgment being satisfied
because like God's judgment it purifies that which is not pure. Deut.4:24
“For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.” Fire
can sterilize a needle or smelt impure metal, thus removing the impurities
and making it pure. Both the Greek and Hebrew words for fire contain the
idea of purging, cleansing or refining. When God's holiness was violated
by man's sin, His divine justice of death became His just judgment. This
judgment was pictured as being satisfied by the "burnt offerings" in the
Mosaic Law. God would symbolically touch the fire of His judgment to
the innocent substitute (an animal sacrifice) in order to balance the scales
of His divine justice. From the fires of the altar of incense and the brazen
altars of the Old Testament, to the fire of the Judgment Seat of Christ and
the Great White Throne judgment of God, fire has and will forever reveal
that He is a God who satisfies His judgment.
Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God. Jn. 1:29 “The next day John
seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away the sin of the world.” Jn. 1:36 “And looking upon Jesus as
he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” Rev. 5:6 “And I beheld,
and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst
of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain,” Rev. 7:10 “And cried
with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the
throne, and unto the Lamb.” Rev. 7:17 “For the Lamb which is in the
midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living
fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”
Rev. 14:4 “These are they which were not defiled with women; for they
are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he
goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto
God and to the Lamb.” The following verses also mention the Lamb of
God. Read them when you have time. Revelation 14:10, Revelation
15:3, Revelation 19:9, Revelation 21:22, 23, Revelation 22:1, 3.
WE CAN EAT THE MEAL NOW!! LET US HAVE A JOYOUS
FELLOWSHIP IN OUR LORD AND SAVIOR THE LAMB OF
GOD!!
AFIKOMEN: Dessert.
The Afikomen hidden earlier in the Seder must be found and redeemed.
The word “afikomen” in the Greek means dessert. In ancient times the
Passover Lamb was the last food to be eaten because there is no temple
today and no Passover lamb is slain. There is no need for a lamb to be slain
for the Lamb of God was slain for the sins of the world. Tonight the
afikomen represents the broken body of the Lord Jesus Christ the Lamb of
God who took our place on the cross and paid the penalty of sin. Christ is
our Passover Lamb.
The Seder must not go on until the afikomen is redeemed. In Jewish
tradition once the afikomen is found by one of the children, that child will
begin to barter with the father concerning the price to be paid for the
afikomen. Once the price is agreed upon, the father will give a gift in the
form of a down payment as his promise to the child who found the
afikomen. The immediate down payment is a gift given to the child as
assurance that the final agreed upon price will ultimately be paid at a future
time. This promise that the father makes to the child is called the promise of
the father.
FOR THE CHRISTIAN: The Afikomen represents Jesus broken body
being buried. The piece earlier in the Seder was called the bread of
affliction where Jesus was afflicted with our sins on Calvary and died for
them. Finding the Afikomen shows now He is resurrected. Everyone who
finds Christ and receives Him as Lord and Savior into their hearts and lives
by faith God promises them that they will receive the Holy Spirit to indwell
in them. The indwelling Holy Spirit is the gift given to us from God the
Father as a sealed promise. Eph. 1:13 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye
heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after
that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.”
2Cor. 1:22 “Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in
our hearts.” Eph. 4:30 “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye
are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
Through the Holy Spirit God bestows gifts upon them. Lk. 24:49 “And, behold, I send
the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be
endued with power from on high.”
READ: 1Cor. 12:1 - 11, 28. If time permitted. What gift has God given you?
TZAFUN: Eating the Afikomen.
Let us examine ourselves before we partake of the Lord’s body and blood. The
afikomen is just a symbol of Christ’s body with no saving power in it. We are
remembering what He did for us. 1Cor. 10:16 “The cup of blessing which we bless,
is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the
communion of the body of Christ?”
1Cor. 11:23, 24 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you,
That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he
had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for
you: this do in remembrance of me.”
Let us eat the bread:
The third cup is filled: The 3rd cup is called the Cup of Redemption: Historically those
that killed the lamb and applied the blood to the door posts and lintel were passed over
delivered from wrath. The same goes for all who hear the Gospel. They must realize to escape
the wrath of God they must apply the blood of the Lamb to the door of their heart to be passed
over. Without the shedding of blood there would have been no redemption. Read these
verses when you have the time. 1 Pet. 1:19, 1 Corinthians 10:16, Ephesians 2:13,
Hebrews 9:11, Hebrews 9:14, 1 Peter 1:2, Romans 5:9, Romans 3:25, Ephesians 1:7, 1Jn
1:7.
1Cor. 11:25 “After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying,
This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in
remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew
the Lord's death till he come.”
ALL: Lord Jesus, may the cup and the bread remind us, that Thy blood was shed to
save us for eternity, great was Thy work on Calvary.
Drink the cup:
Ex.12:21 - 23 “Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them,
Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover. And
ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike
the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you
shall go out at the door of his house until the morning. For the LORD will pass
through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the
two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to
come in unto your houses to smite you.” Each family killed the lamb by the door. THE
BLOOD was applied by they’re dipping the hyssop into a basin of blood and touched
the lintel, the top and each side post. The original Passover centuries before becomes a
picture of Christ the suffering one with the crown of thorns on his head both hands
outstretched and his feet pierced with nails. In the Passover the blood was not to be
touched by hands it was applied with hyssop to the door posts and lintel. In the New
Testament the blood only works when it is applied by faith; it was applied only once to
give freedom. We stay behind the blood until Christ comes again and takes us to the
promised land of heaven and then to the Land of Zion and Jerusalem for the 1000 year
reign with Him.
The 4th cup is poured: Lk. 22:14-18 “And he said unto them, With desire I have
desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any
more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and
gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I
will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.”
This is the cup that Christ did not drink of not until Rev. 19:7 - 9.
THE PROMISE: 1Thess. 4:13 - 18 “But I would not have you to be ignorant,
brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which
have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also
which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word
of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not
prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with
a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in
Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up
together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be
with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
HALLEL: THE GREAT PRAISE:
Sing a song of the coming KING!!!!!!!!! One Day: One day the trumpet will
sound for His coming, One day the skies with His glories will shine; Wonderful day,
my beloved One bringing; Glorious Savior, this Jesus is mine! Living, He loved me;
dying, He saved me; Buried He carried my sins far away; Rising, He justified freely
forever; One day He’s coming - O glorious day!
Marriage of the Lamb: Rev. 19:7 - 9 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to
him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And
to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the
fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they
which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These
are the true sayings of God.”
Drink the 4th cup: The cup of His coming or the cup of the Kingdom.
The 2nd Coming: The Coming King: Seven years are past now AND THEN
Rev. 19:11 - 16 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat
upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make
war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had
a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture
dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were
in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And
out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he
shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and
wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written,
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
NIRTZAH: CLOSING:
What God did for the Nation of Israel He did for us through the Lord Jesus Christ.
To go through the Historical Passover Seder you can see that it can teach how we can
grow in a spiritual personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. We can see that
God spiritually redeems you from Egypt the world system of satan and his influence
over your life through the blood of Jesus Christ your Passover Lamb. We saw the
redemptive plan that is through the blood, death, burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ,
the out pouring of the Holy Spirit, the hope of the soon rapture of the church by our
Lord and Savior, the second coming of the Messianic age to reign with Him and then
after that 1,000 year reign will live with Him forever in the New Jerusalem and the
new earth and new heaven.
The Jews say NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM!
Jesus said, “Surely I come quickly”
The Christian’s say AMEN. EVEN SO, COME, LORD JESUS!
This ends the Christian Passover Seder. I hope it was a spiritual awakening and
a spiritual blessing. May the Lord Bless you.
