Gretna SceneEVEN for Gretna Green, this was a strange story. Marcus Lee-Curtis, 21, and Marie Schearer, 16, weren’t runaways. The bridegroom’s mother was at the wedding and so were twenty other guests. But the bride’s parents weren’t there. In fact, they didn’t know anything about the wedding until the following week, and then Mrs Schearer was so angry that she attacked Marcus’ mother.

Marie first met Marcus when she was only 13. They fell in love and when Marie was 16, she left home and lived with Marcus at his grandmother’s house. They decided to get married. But Marie was only 16 and her parents didn’t approve, so they went to Gretna Green.

A week later, Marie’s mother opened the local newspaper and saw a photograph of the bride and groom. She wasn’t happy and she blamed Marcus mother. She waited outside the Lee-Curtis’ house, and when Mrs Lee-Curtis came out, Mrs Schearer stopped her. She shouted at her and pulled her hair. When Marcus tried to help his mother, Mrs Schearer hit him in the stomach. Then she drove her car at Mrs Lee- Curtis and pushed her into a garden. In court to day Mrs Schearer apologised. When. they came out of court Marie smiled and said: “I hope that in time we can all get together.’

English 2013/14 14

In England you can get married when you are 16, but you need your parents’ permission until you are 18. In Scotland, however, you can get married at 16 without this. So young English people who want to get married without their parents’ permission often run away (elope) to Scotland. The traditional place for these weddings is Gretna Green, a village just over the Scottish border.

PracticeThe Witch of Wall Street

Hetty Robinson learnt all about money when she was very young. As a child, she read the financial pages of the newspaper to her wealthy father. Her father died when Hetty was 30 years old and she inherited $1 million. When she herself died in 1916, she left a fortune of almost $100 million to her two children.

Hetty made her money on the New York stock exchange. She was a financial genius. She made money so easily that people called her the Witch of Wall Street. But although she was one of the richest women in the world, she was very mean. She counted every cent and she spent as little as possible. She didn’t own a house, because she didn’t want to pay property taxes. So she and her children lived in cheap hotels.

She spent almost nothing on clothes, and wore the same long black dress every day. She washed it herself, but to save soap she only washed the bottom of the dress, where it touched the ground. Other people had their own offices, but Hetty used a desk in the bank where she kept her money, because it didn’t cost anything. She sat in the bank and ate her sandwiches while she bought and sold stocks and shares. If the bank complained, she just moved all her money to another bank.

Hetty’s family paid the price for her meanness. When she was 33 she married a millionaire, Edward Green and they had two children. Green, however, lost all his money, so Hetty left him. When her son, Ned, injured his knee Hetty didn’t want to pay for a doctor, so she took him to a free hospital for poor people. Unfortunately the doctor knew that Hetty was rich and he asked for money. Hetty refused and took the boy away. His leg didn’t get better and two years later doctors removed it.

But eventually Ned got his revenge. At the age of 81 Hetty had an argument with a shop assistant about the price of a bottle of milk. She became so angry that she had a stroke and died. So Hetty’s meanness finally killed her. Ned inherited half his mother’s fortune, and he spent it all on parties, holidays and expensive jewellery. He even bought a chamber pot covered with diamonds!

Language focus: so ... that ...Look at these two sentences:

Hetty became angry. She had a stroke. The second sentence is the result of the first sentence. We can show it like this:Hetty became so angry that she had a stroke.

Join these sentences in the same way.1 Hetty was mean. She refused to pay for a doctor.

A day in the life of …It was Thursday morning, the weather was better than I thought. I got up early, had a shower and put on some clean clothes, the best clothes I had. In order to manage my stress I like to have a walk in the morning, in all types of weather. I didn't go for a walk today though, I was too busy. I didn't have a car so I needed to take the bus. I had a heavy breakfast (a bit like brunch) as I didn't know when I would eat again. I may only have a snack for lunch. Dinner seemed a long time away. I had an appointment in Manchester city center at 11.30 to see a dress designer who was promoting his new collection, Jovani! He comes from Lanciano, the most beautiful city in Abruzzo. It was a tough week and I was looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow was Saturday and I needed a rest. I just don't understand how come I was so tired' I have searched on the internet for information on Jovani and I have been analyzing him for some time. Jovani's designer dresses collection is unlike anything it has been in the past. With all new styles, fits, silhouettes and fabrics, Jovani's designer dresses spans over many different looks including classic and conservative, fashion-forward and trendy as well as simple and elegant. Al the moment he is very big in the USA. He should be a very useful contact to develop but a tough contact to convince. Jovani also promotes other people's designs, like some of my favorite brands. I would be happy to meet any of the designers. I create drawings and draw every day and live for design. I also like cooking, I can cook very well and it is nice to be able to do something which other people appreciate. Some of Jovani's customers are the most prestigious buyers in the business. I got to their offices early, so I had to wait. There were a lot of good cafés so I had a coffee and watched some TV alone. I love coffee but I don't like tea much. The area was full of factories and offices. It was very industrial. I lived most of my life on a farm so I was not used to industry. After the coffee I went for a walk and stopped at a local employment agency. There were a lot of jobs on offer. The people seemed friendly and the office was nice so I popped in. The meeting at the agency took just a few minutes and they seemed like professional people. They told me I will not have any difficulty finding a job. I found that difficult to believe in this climate, the worst climate for some time. I left them a copy of my CV and they told me they would call me. It was time to go to the designer's office, I didn't want to be late so I said goodbye and moved on. The high fashion sector is difficult but I find it so interesting. The offices were beautiful, much nicer than the employment agency's. They left me with a form to fill in which had a lot of personal questions.

I needed to go to the outskirts of the city. Before I went into Jovani's offices, I thought if there was anything else I needed to take in with me. No, I had my CV, and portfolio with me, so I carried on into the building. What else could he need ? I thought to myself. It is always useful to bring a note pad and pen to take notes of any details. I can not trust my memory as I often forget details. In fashion, from day to day, you feel like anything can happen. I also think I am better at designing short, casual dresses. An enthusiastic assistant called me over and I followed her to the marketing and sales department. She was full of energy with a striped T-shirt and a black pair of trousers. The marketing department was very clean, and light and some of the employees were acting quite silly. On the contrary, the Marketing Manager was really quite serious, he was wearing an elegant suit, glasses and his hair was very curly. I could see Jovani in the distance. He was quite an old designer, perhaps in his 50s. He was wearing a dark, clean cut suit with a pink lining, and shoulder pads from the 80's. His pockets were empty with the same pink trim. The material looked soft to touch but aggressive. The trousers and jacket were made out of the same material. It was a fantastic suit. He was deep in thought talking to a photographer. The marketing manager spoke clearly and came over as very professional but he had a French accent. I love France and I speak it very well. It is very useful to speak French in the world of high fashion. He asked me 'Shall we start?', and I smiled as an answer, as I felt a little nervous. He asked me 'Let's talk about your work experience.' So we started talking and we got on really well. We spent some time negotiating the deal, but at the end, we shook hands and we closed the deal. The meeting didn't take long. I will have a tough job meeting the agreed expectations, but I think I will have a good time trying. I do work hard and I care about my targets. I was very happy, my plans had come true, and this was a huge deal. I felt hot in my dress from the excitement, even though I looked really beautiful in it. Sooner or later everybody gets a break and this was mine. Jovani's team was very professional, and persuaded me to stay in a hotel for the night. I agreed, and heard the Hyatt had a room. The streets were dirty and noisy, with so much traffic. I'm not exaggerating.

Traditional Shepherd’s PieThe dish gets its name from the caretaker of one of England's most valued animals -- the sheep. It was sheep's wool that first brought England prosperity and commercial strength. From sheep comes mutton and lamb. Mutton is the meat of a sheep at least 2 years old, "prime" mutton is from a 4-year-old, and lamb is the meat of a sheep up to 1 year old. To be exact, shepherd's pie is not really a pie. Traditionally, it was a mixture of meat (usually minced cooked mutton), whatever vegetables were available, seasonings and a thickened stock, covered with a layer of mashed potatoes. When baked, the mashed potatoes developed a lightly browned crust, hence the likeness to a pie.

I am going toI’m going to (do something) = I have decided to do it, my intention is to do it:In the morning “I’m going to watch TV this evening”

It is not an appointment, a fixed arrangement but something you intend to do. I’m going to buy some books tomorrow. Sarah is going to sell her car. I’m not going to have breakfast this morning. I’m not hungry. What are you going to wear to the party tonight? ‘Your hands are dirty.’ ‘Yes, I know. I’m going to wash them.’ Are you going to invite John to your party?

Something is going to happen

Something is going to happen = it is clear now that it is sure to happen: Look at the sky! It’s going to rain. (black clouds now —~ rain) Oh dear! It’s 9 o’clock and I’m not ready. I’m going to be late. (9 o’clock

PracticeEducation in England and WalesChildren start primary school when they are 5 years old. From 11 to 16 they go to secondary school. When they are 16 they take the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams. At the age of 16 they can leave school or study for two more years in the sixth form. Here, they study three subjects for the qualification called A-levels. At the age of 18 they can go on to study at a university. Most university courses last three years. Students can apply to any university in the country and many young people choose to study away from home.

A year outYou’ve just finished your A levels and you’ve got a place at university, but you’d really like a break from the academic world. Why not think about taking a year out? While most students go straight from school to university, more and more young people today are choosing to spend a year at ‘the university of life’ first.

There are lots of things to choose from. You could work in a bank or do community work. You might even do something adventurous, such as joining an expedition to the Amazon rain forest. The experience will broaden your horizons and teach you new skills. It may also give you the chance to earn some money, which will be very helpful when you eventually start your studies.

If you’re interested in taking a year out, you must make sure that the university will hold your place for you till next year. Most are quite happy to do this, as they find that year-out students are more mature, confident, and independent. But don’t forget: it’s a year out not a year off. Your university will want to know what you’re going to do. They won’t be very pleased if you just want to do nothing for a year. So what would you do with a year out?

What are you going to do in your year out? Your plans for the near futureWhat would you do if you had a year out? Hypothetical discussionGoing to do something + willExample: A local factory has closed down. Write the plans that people have.1. Retire / buy a cottage.I’m going to retire. I think I’ll buy a cottage.

The Past Continuous

The past continuous does not tell us whether an action was finished or not. Perhaps it was finished, perhaps not. Compare:

Tom was cooking the dinner. (past continuous) = He was in the middle of cooking the dinner and we do not know whether he finished cooking it.

Tom cooked the dinner. (past simple) = He began and finished it.

We often use the past continuous (I was doing) and the past simple (I did) together to say that something happened in the middle of something else:

Tom burnt his hand when he was cooking the dinner. I saw Jim in the park. He was sitting on the grass reading a book. It was raining when I got up. While I was working in the garden, I hurt my back.

But to say that one thing happened after another, use the past simple:

Yesterday evening Tom was having a bath when the phone rang. He got out of the bath and answered the phone.

Compare:

When Tom arrived, we were having dinner. (past continuous) = We had already started dinner before Tom arrived.

When Tom arrived, we had dinner. (past simple) = Tom arrived and then we had dinner.

There are some verbs (for example know) which are not normally used in continuous tenses.

The past simple and past continuous

English 2013/14 35

Yesterday Tom and Jim played tennis. They began at 10 o’clock and finished at 11o`clock.What were they doing at 10.30?They were playing tennis (at 10.30).

They “were playing” means that they were in the middle of playing tennis. They had started playing but they hadn’t finished.

This is the past continuous tense: I/ he/ she was

playingWe/ they/ you were }

We use the past continuous to say that someone was in the middle of doing something at a certain time. The action or situation had already started before this time but hadn’t finished.

This time last year I was living in Brazil.

What were you doing at 10.00 o`clock last night?

An embarrassing incident

One day last summer I was walking through the local park. It was a hot day and I was eating an ice cream. As I was walking past the boating lake, I saw my friends, Carol and Jim. They were taking their dog for a walk. When we met, we stopped for a chat. While we were talking, the dog suddenly jumped up and tried to get my ice cream. I pulled my hand away and unfortunately the ice cream came out of the cone. Now there was a bald man behind me. The poor man wasn’t doing any harm. He was just sitting on a bench and reading a newspaper. Well, when I pulled my hand away, the ice cream flew through the air and it landed on the man’s head. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but Carol and Jim did. When I looked at them, they weren’t just laughing, they were in hysterics. But I was terribly embarrassed.

East meets West

The events in Berlin in 1989 will live in people’s memories for years to come. At midnight on November 9, the division of the city by the Berlin wall ended after twenty-eight years.

East and West Berliners wept for joy and embraced each other as they climbed over the wall or crossed over the open checkpoints. Family and friends were reunited after years of separation and the celebrations lasted throughout the night. The streets were full of singing, dancing people.

Many Berliners had come prepared and began to attack the construction with hammers. Traffic came to a standstill, but no-one wanted to go anywhere else. These people were making history.

By dawn, small groups of Eastern and Western Berliners were sitting together, exhausted by their emotions and the celebrations. Their faces were full of the excitement of freedom and realisation that Berlin was one city again.
