Medicaid Expansion: Access Now More Important Than Ever

In 2018, Virginia expanded Medicaid, whichchanged eligibility rules. Now, those at or below138 percent of the federal poverty level may beeligible, even if they'd applied and been denied inthe past. The cut off is up to $17,237 for anindividual or $29,436 for a family of three annually.

But some people may lose Medicaid coverage throughout the year, whether it's because they get a raise and go over the income limit orbecause they fail to renew coverage when due. We understand thataccess to insurance doesn't always mean access to care. In a recent article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, several area freeclinic directors noted that new Medicaid patients still may have a hardtime finding care, either because clinics aren't accepting patients orbecause of inability to travel. The Department of Medical AssistanceServices, Virginia's Medicaid agency, recently said that the number ofavailable providers is considered adequate by state and federalstandards. And yet, "We know that there are multiple areas of our state that needmore primary care doctors, and other communities that lack specificmedical specialists," the DMAS statement read. "We are committed toworking with the six health plans to strengthen access to care."

That's why Access Now remains so vital in our communities. Wewant our patients to understand that we're here so they don't fallthrough the cracks.
