From the Director Arttransformslives.WeatthePatricia&PhillipFrostArtMuseum,FIU,knowthisbecausewe

seetheimpactthattheFrostArtMuseumhasonourvisitorseveryday.Thankstothe

generosityofFIUandourpatrons,theFrostisfreetothepublic.Ourblossomingrelationship

withSweetwaterElementarySchoolhasresultedinanexcitingandpromisingcurriculum

integratingartandsciences.OurGreenCritics’LectureSeriesisaspopularasever.TheFrost

staysrelevantbecauseitchangeswithourcommunity.

Aswegrow,Miamiansseekusout.Wehostedmorethan35,000visitorslastyear,abouthalfof

whomwerefromoutsidetheuniversity.Wecontinuetofine-tuneourmembershipbenefitsto

encouragevisitorstoinvestintheFrostArtMuseum’sefforttoeffectpositivechange.Weheld

oursecondannualBenefactorImpactevent,honoringDennisSchollwho,asastudent,foundin

FIU’sthen-newmuseumahiveofcreativeactivitythatexcitedhim.Scholl’sstory,likethoseof

thechildrenfromSweetwater,isproofpositiveoftherolemuseumsplayasinvestmentsina

community’swelfareandthemeasurablechangestheycanbringaboutinpeople’slives.

Testingscoresandclassroombehaviorhavemarkedlyimprovedwithteachersengaging

studentsinartatschoolandthroughfieldtrips,down107th

approachourtenthanniversaryastheFrostArtMuseumandthefortiethanniversaryofour

founding,wecontinuetoprovokethought,action,andinnovativethinking.Ourannual

MartinLutherKing,Jr.ExhibitionSeries—supportedthroughacollaborativeeffortofseveral

FIUdepartments—addressesissuesofrace,diversity,socialjustice,civilrights,andhumanityto

serveasacatalystfordialogueandenrichourcommunitywithnewperspectives.Our

upcomingexhibitionsfeatureartacrosstimeandcultures,aswebringtheworldofvisualarts

totheFIUcampus.JustasourexhibitionofAustralianAboriginalartinviteddiscussionabout

thecontinuityofanart-makingculturefarbeyondthetemporalboundariesofthewestern

canon,ourupcomingexhibitionswillexplorerapidlychangingideasongenderandrace.These

highlightstakeplacealongsideourexhibitionofemergingartistsgraduatingfromFIU’sMaster

inFineArtsprogram,anannualprogrammingtraditioninwhichtheFrostisproudtoserveas

anearly-careervenuefortheseyoungstudents’work.

Inadditiontothistemporaryprogramming,theFrostwillshineanew,brighterspotlightonthe

permanentcollectioninourrenovatedthirdfloorgalleriesthroughanongoingexhibitioncalled

BridgingCommunities.Forthisinstallation,wewentbacktothefoundingvisionofJimCouper,

themuseum’sfirstdirector,whodeclaredthatthisinstitutionwouldfulfillabeliefin“artfor

all.”Couper’svisionunderlinedabasictruthaboutartsinstitutions:theirimpactonvisitors

dependsonthegenerosityofthosewhoasserttheirdesiretoseethetransformativepotential

ofartfullyrealized.AFrostmembershiprepresentssuchanassertion.Pleasejoinandinvestin

themuseumthatinvestsinitscommunity.

from40to68,inspiring1683attendees.

Change”project.Studentswroteletterstotheirfutureselvesaboutwhattheworldwill

belikeifwedonottakecareofourenvironment.Theselettersbecamepartofafuture

basedartist,YuniKimLang.BorninKorea,andraisedinHongKong,Shanghai,andBeijing,Lang

examinesherAsianrootsthroughaglobalandgenderedlens.

Themuseumoffereddocent-ledtourstotheFirstYearExperiencecourses.Weheld24tours

andwelcomed2465studentstothemuseum.

MLKExhibitionForseveralyears,themuseumhasdevelopedanexhibitioninthewintertocoincidewiththe

university’sMLKCommemorativeCelebration.In2016,themuseumdefinedthescopeandgoal

oftheexhibition,andestablisheditformallyasanexhibitionseries.TheMartinLutherKing,Jr.

Exhibitionseriesaddressesissuesofrace,diversity,socialjustice,civilrights,andhumanityto

serveasacatalystfordialogueandenrichourcommunitywithnewperspectives.

Inaddition,themuseumhasaseatontheMLKcommitteeandparticipatesintheplanningof

thecelebration.OnJanuary19,2017,themuseumopenedCastingShadows:PhotographsbyEdwardWest,whichfeaturedphotographstakenbyWestofcommunitiesofcolorinpost-
