From the Director Arttransformslives.WeatthePatricia&PhillipFrostArtMuseum,FIU,knowthisbecausewe

seetheimpactthattheFrostArtMuseumhasonourvisitorseveryday.Thankstothe

generosityofFIUandourpatrons,theFrostisfreetothepublic.Ourblossomingrelationship

withSweetwaterElementarySchoolhasresultedinanexcitingandpromisingcurriculum

integratingartandsciences.OurGreenCritics’LectureSeriesisaspopularasever.TheFrost

staysrelevantbecauseitchangeswithourcommunity.

Aswegrow,Miamiansseekusout.Wehostedmorethan35,000visitorslastyear,abouthalfof

whomwerefromoutsidetheuniversity.Wecontinuetofine-tuneourmembershipbenefitsto

encouragevisitorstoinvestintheFrostArtMuseum’sefforttoeffectpositivechange.Weheld

oursecondannualBenefactorImpactevent,honoringDennisSchollwho,asastudent,foundin

FIU’sthen-newmuseumahiveofcreativeactivitythatexcitedhim.Scholl’sstory,likethoseof

thechildrenfromSweetwater,isproofpositiveoftherolemuseumsplayasinvestmentsina

community’swelfareandthemeasurablechangestheycanbringaboutinpeople’slives.

studentsinartatschoolandthroughfieldtrips,down107th

approachourtenthanniversaryastheFrostArtMuseumandthefortiethanniversaryofour

founding,wecontinuetoprovokethought,action,andinnovativethinking.Ourannual

MartinLutherKing,Jr.ExhibitionSeries—supportedthroughacollaborativeeffortofseveral

FIUdepartments—addressesissuesofrace,diversity,socialjustice,civilrights,andhumanityto

serveasacatalystfordialogueandenrichourcommunitywithnewperspectives.Our

upcomingexhibitionsfeatureartacrosstimeandcultures,aswebringtheworldofvisualarts

totheFIUcampus.JustasourexhibitionofAustralianAboriginalartinviteddiscussionabout

thecontinuityofanart-makingculturefarbeyondthetemporalboundariesofthewestern

canon,ourupcomingexhibitionswillexplorerapidlychangingideasongenderandrace.These

highlightstakeplacealongsideourexhibitionofemergingartistsgraduatingfromFIU’sMaster

inFineArtsprogram,anannualprogrammingtraditioninwhichtheFrostisproudtoserveas

anearly-careervenuefortheseyoungstudents’work.

Inadditiontothistemporaryprogramming,theFrostwillshineanew,brighterspotlightonthe

permanentcollectioninourrenovatedthirdfloorgalleriesthroughanongoingexhibitioncalled

BridgingCommunities.Forthisinstallation,wewentbacktothefoundingvisionofJimCouper,

themuseum’sfirstdirector,whodeclaredthatthisinstitutionwouldfulfillabeliefin“artfor

all.”Couper’svisionunderlinedabasictruthaboutartsinstitutions:theirimpactonvisitors

dependsonthegenerosityofthosewhoasserttheirdesiretoseethetransformativepotential

ofartfullyrealized.AFrostmembershiprepresentssuchanassertion.Pleasejoinandinvestin

FlaglerFamilyDiscoveryGallery,andtravelingexhibitions,oureducationteamvisitedthe

schoolonmultipleoccasionstosupportartsintegrationintheclassroomwithmathand

science.

Inconjunctionwithourthree-yearpartnershipwiththePresidentandCEOofWavingHands

andteacherforthedeafatG.HolmesBraddockHighSchool,JohnPaulJebian,theFrostArt

MuseumscheduledatourwithhisAmericanSignLanguagestudents.Thestudentsputtheir

skillstothetestbyengagingwithotherstudentsfromlocalschoolsforthedeaf.

Additionally,weaverage6000studentsfrom,public,private,charter,home,andotherschools.

Weserve9districtsfromMiamiDadeCountyand5districtsfromBrowardCounty.

CommunityToursDoralSilverClub,SweetwaterElderlyHomeresidents,ThePalace,EastRidgeRetirement

Community,andseveralresidentclubsfromBrickellKeyandPalmBeachvisitedthroughoutthe

year.

Overall,toursdecreasedthisfiscalyear,asweincreasedthenumberofeducationalprograms

from40to68,inspiring1683attendees.

attendeespromptedustohostthesesessions

bimonthly.

FamilyDaysFamilyDaystakeplacetwiceayear,inthefallandin

thespring.OurfallFamilyDaywasalignedwithour

focusedondesignandfashion,someofwhichwere

providedbyfashionstudentsandprofessorsfromthe

InstituteofArtandDesigninMiami.

Inthespring,inpartnershipwiththeMiamiDade

CulturalAffairsOffice,AllKidsIncluded,andZotArtz,

weorganizedanannualeventforfamiliesand

childrenofallabilitiesandages.Thiseventwasheld

theBlueParkingGaragetoaccommodatetheover

300participantsofallabilities.

Education Initiatives STEAMworks!SweetwaterElementarySchool This arts integration pilot program is currently in its second year. STEAMworks! is an artsintegration program promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and

Mathematics) learning through the arts and thedevelopment of 21st

-century skills for global

competiveness.

Theimpactofourpartnershipthisyearwas

evidencedwhenthird,fourth,andfifth

gradestudentswereinspiredtocreatetheir

ownmuseumatschoolfromtheirvisitsto

theFrost.Theytitledtheirmuseum“Power

oftheArts”andcuratedanexhibitionof

withworksinspiredbyexhibitionsfeatured

attheFrost.Selectedstudentsrole-played

thepositonsofdirector,curator,registrar,

docent,securityandpublicrelationsstaff

andeachworetheproperdresscodeand

namebadge.Thistookplacealongwith

Parent’sNightandtheFrostteamrewarded

thesestudentswithacertificateof

excellenceasamuseumprofessional,along

withaminiTorchAward.

Additionally,throughtheSTEAMworks!programwithSweetwaterElementarySchool:

• MuseumstaffengagedinSweetwaterElementarySchool’sCareerDay.

• STEAMintegratedresourcesandlessonswereproducedforeveryexhibitionand

presentedintheclassrooms.

• Schoolteacherswereinvitedtoattendopeningnightsofexhibitions.

• OurDoralpartnerandtheFrosthostedaTeacher’sAppreciationNight.

• SweetwaterCitycontinuestoattempttocollaboratewiththeFrosttoproduce

educationalprogramsasperourMOU.

• InspiredbyourexhibitionoftheLodMosaic,studentscreatedamosaicoftheirown

focusedontheEvergladesandenvironmentalfactorsthatcanendangertheanimalsand

ecosystem.Thiswasmadeofrecycledmaterialsandearnedthestudentsattentionfrom

MDCPSStudentExhibition.ThemosaicwasdisplayedattheBakehouseArtCenter.

• ArtistXavierCortadapresentedatSweetwaterElementarySchoolfor“ArtofClimate

Change”project.Studentswroteletterstotheirfutureselvesaboutwhattheworldwill

belikeifwedonottakecareofourenvironment.Theselettersbecamepartofafuture

Themuseumoffereddocent-ledtourstotheFirstYearExperiencecourses.Weheld24tours

MLKExhibitionForseveralyears,themuseumhasdevelopedanexhibitioninthewintertocoincidewiththe
