The food they
bring in yearbook:
a senior tribute
I wrote an article last month about seniors' futures.
Once again I find myself writing about
the leaders of our school.
They're leaving. And it's sad and exciting all at the
same time. Every year we say good bye to a beloved
senior class. We talk about how much we'll miss them
and everyone dreams about the success and intellect
they will acquire as they move on to the next
phase of life.
In the state of being that is Graduation, everyone
loves that senior class more than they ever have, be-
cause they are leaving. Students reminisce on all the
things they will miss.
For example, "The food they bring in Yearbook,"
said Bekah Nagel. And Darryle is going to miss her
chauffeur, widely known to the world as her sister,
Catie. Olivia Klug put it eloquently when she said that
she will miss their athleticism and friendliness.
All these things will be greatly missed, but I believe
that Mr. Sandcork said it best when he said he'll miss
their smiles, work ethic, leadership, and enthusiasm,
among other things.
It's cheesy but true. This year's senior class has pro-
vided us with leadership, set an example on how we
should work, and, I'll just say it, provided the rest of us
a little maturity. I know that I personally will miss
them, from dysfunctionally working with Megan on
decorations (but still getting it done fabulously) to An-
drew's antics in the math room.
I'll miss being on sports teams and Student Council
with them. They've kept me sane this year, and I
thank them for that. But that also begs the question:
what will I do without them next year?
I just might go crazy.

Yummy chemistry
Throughout chemistry this year, the juniors have had the privi-
lege of having St. Mary's University chemistry students and their
professor, Dr. Brett Bodsgard, visit their class. Dr. Bodsgard is
the Associate Professor of Chemistry at St. Mary's University. He
has been the head of the chemistry department at St. Mary's for
four years and has been teaching chemistry for thirteen years.
Most recently, on April 4, Dr. Bodsgard
showed the chemistry class at Hope how to
make nitrogen ice cream. The class had
been studying covalent bonding, and re-
ceived a chart on how all the ingredients in
the ice cream bonded together.
All the students had some hand in mak-
ing the ice cream. First, cream and half-
and-half was poured in a large bowl along with sugar and vanil-
la. Finally, Dr. Bodsgard poured liquid nitrogen in, while a stu-
dent stirred the concoction as fast as they could.
The nitrogen froze the ingredients almost instantaneously. The
result was delicious vanilla ice cream, topped off with chocolate
and sprinkles.
The next topic was LED lights and how they react to extremely
cold temperatures, like those produced with liquid nitrogen.
Three students were each given a red, a blue, and a yellow LED
light. The students put the lights in the nitrogen and watched
them slowly turn colors as they got colder, and returned to nor-
mal.
It was also fascinating to see the effects extreme temperatures
had on other things, such as a balloon and a racket ball.
Washington, DC trip As the school year is coming to an end, the senior government class will
be taking a trip to Washington, D.C. The class, along with Mrs. Bautch,
will be leaving in the early morning of May 20 to catch their flight and will
return May 27.
Some sites they plan to visit are the White House, National Archives
Museum, National Zoo, the Pentagon, and
several other memorials and monuments.
Over Memorial Day weekend, they
will get to watch the 10th annual Na-
tional Memorial Day Parade. This parade is organized by American Vet-
erans Center and honors those servicemen and servicewomen who
put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms. More than a quar-
ter million people are expected to
view the parade live this year. A fire-
works display over the city caps the
day.
Please keep the seniors and chaperones
in your prayers as they finish making
plans for the trip and pray for safe travels.
Watching the parade from the Library of Congress.
