It’s always a treat when David Hamel brings one of his completed models for Show-and-Tell. They’re always exhaustively researched, impec- cably built, and usually feature a ton of modifications and additions. This one is no exception. It’s a 1/72 scale Ju 87 B-1, built from the Fujimi kit. David used a Cobra Productions interior, Airfix tail gear and part of the main gear, Eduard exterior parts, Squadron canopy, Italeri resin bomb, Archer rivets, and Master gun barrels/pitot tube. He also scratchbuilt the exhaust pipes and siren blade/housings, reshaped propeller blades from the spares box, and added the dorsal clear view window and wing leading edge landing light. Paints are mostly Xtracolor with some powdered aluminum and chalk added for weathering. Decals are from PrintScale, Airfix and MicroScale. The markings are for 9./StG. 51. The next Patriot Chapter meeting will take place on Friday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Unitarian Church in Billerica, MA. The church is located on Concord Road, just as it meets Route 3A (Boston Road) at the Bil- lerica Town Common. CHAPTER President Dave Schmidt called the meeting to order at 7:50. About 15 members were present, and there was also a special guest.

Bill Michaels gave a report on Patcon. By all measures, Patcon was a success. There were slightly fewer models than last year, but still a very good number. Bill said that if this trend continues, the club may accumulate some extra funds with which we might consider doing something for the community such as a donation to a charity. Pip Moss presented a brief report on the number of entrants and models, and compared them to last year’s show.

Treasurer John Touloupis presented the treasurer’s report, including the Patcon finances, to which Bill Michaels added some details. He said that the raffle was a success, which he attributed in part to the club offering higher quality grand prize models than last year. There was a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as read. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Bill noted that the final models of the Rich Rycroft collection were on the table for distribution that evening.

USAAF TSgt Albert Odette (Retired) of Woburn was intro-duced. Mr. Odette was a radio operator/gunner on B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator aircraft during World War II. He flew 30 missions over Europe, including three over Berlin. He was responsible for the airplane radio communication, operation of the dorsal machine gun, and getting the ball turret gunner out of the turret. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in getting a damaged B-17 to exact ditching coordinates in the English Channel, resulting in the rescue of the crew.

Mr. Odette told a number of stories about his experiences in the B-17, which was his preferred airplane and the one in which he flew most of the missions. He flew in E, F, and G models of the B-17. He stated that there a lot of things that he remembers from the missions, but the thing that he remembers most is his crew.

In tribute to TSgt. Odette, the club held a special “B-17 night:” members were encouraged to bring in Flying Fortress models. There were four on the table, plus one B-24.

October winners:

John Touloupis, Hasegawa 1/48 BMW 327 RoadsterDave Schmidt, Eduard 1/48 Fokker E-IIIBill Michaels, Revell 1/48 Stearman PT-17Tom Boisvert, Patriot Chapter teeshirt.

We sold $65 in tickets, and we paid $58 for the prizes, so we made $16, taking our year-to-date total to $160.

—Bill Michaels, Vice President

Following TSgt Odette’s talk, there was a brief break for raffle sales, followed by Show-and-Tell. After Show-and-Tell there was another break, followed by the raffle and the disbursement of the Rycroft kits, and then the meeting broke up for the night.

—Rick Lippincott, Secretary

John Walker’s 1/35 scale 2.0cm Flak 38 auf Chevrolet 15-CWT (Italeri/Tamiya). John used Tamiya Desert Yellow weathered with oils and powders. The figure is from an old Tamiya kit. The model depicts a vehicle with the Afrika Korps in 1941.

Pip Moss’s 1/48 scale Yak-3 (Zvezda), built OOB except for some AML photo-etch seatbelts and the addition of the canopy antenna mount and the wing-top landing gear inicators. Paints are AKAN acrylic lacquers. Markings, from the kit and Authentic Decals, are for a plane flown by Lieutenant Semyon Ivanovich Rogovoi of the 64th GIAP, 2nd Baltic Front, 1944.

Richard Price’s 1/144 scale B-24J Liberator (Mini-craft, about which Richard had very little good to say), built OOB and painted with Alclad and Model Master enamels. Markings, from the kit, are for an assembly plane of the 491st BG.

Kurt Kunze’s 1/48 scale M4 Sherman (Tamiya). Kurt replaced the kit main gun barrel with one from Fine Molds. Paints are Tamiya and Floquil with Model Master French Earth Brown for weathering. Decals, from the kit, are for the US Army, Europe.

Bill Michaels’ 1/72 scale Gloster Gladiator (Hobby Boss Quick Build), built OOB and painted with Model Master acrylics. Markings are for Malta, 1940. Bill adds, “I found out after the build that the markings are incorrect—they’re for a Sea Gladiator, which should have a 3-bladed prop. Colors and proportions of the decals are also off. The model was built as a ‘slammer’ to try out a new clear flatcoat from Valllejo. Works well; dead flat.”

Tony D’Anjou’s 1/35 scale Flakpanzer IV (Acad-emy), built OOB and painted with Model Master enamels. Aftermarket items: one cat’s whisker for the antenna.

Kurt Kunze’s 1/72 scale Sptfire PR Mk. XIX (Airfix). Kurt added photo-etched seatbelts, boxed in the wheel wells, drilled out the intake for cabin pressurization, and hollowed out the carburator intake. He also replaced the ventral camera port lens with acrylic rod sanded and polished to shape. Decals are from Maestro, Esci, and SuperScale (instrument panel). Markings are for the Swedish Air Force, 1950s.

Bill Michaels’ Corollary robot (Privateer Press), built OOB and painted with assorted acrylics—Citadel, Vallejo and Aeromaster. This multime-dia kit (metal and plastic) is a wargaming piece from the “War Machines” system. It represents a droid of the Convergence of Cyriss faction (whatever that may be).

David Hamel’s 1/72 scale B-17F (Hasegawa). Dave scratchbuilt the gun positions in the nose and cheek windows. Decals are from MicroScale, but Dave hand painted the nose art. Markings are for the 390th BG. Dave adds, My friend Walter Tarbell was a waist gunner on this plane, ‘The Cincinnati Queen.’”
