The History of Valentines By: Lile Lower

A lot of people celebrate Valentine’s Day but most people probably don’t know where it originated. Valentine's day dates back to the 5th century. Valentine's day is named for a Christian martyr, but also has origins of the Roman holiday Lupercalia. In the catholic churches, there are about three saints named Valentine or Valentinus.

One of the legends are about a priest named Valentine who served during the third century in Rome, but was told to be put to death because he continued to marry young couples. He was told not to anymore because the emperor Claudius wanted strong soldiers, so he thought single men were going to be stronger than a man with a wife.

Others believe that he was killed for helping Christians escape prison. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl. People thought it was possibly his jailer's daughter. She visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is hazy, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic and most importantly a romantic figure. Valentines greetings have been shared as far back as the middle ages. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. Parks and Recreation’s, Leslie Knope created Galentine’s Day, and it’s on February 13th, the day before Valentine's Day. This is a special day for anyone whether or not you have a boyfriend or not. This day is celebrated with all your girl friends, so go out and have a fun day with all your friends. In the show Leslie and all her lady friends go out and leave their boyfriends or husbands and kick it breakfast style. This is a perfect way to catch up with your besties and celebrate, look back on some amazing memories with them and just have an amazing day. You can always go handmade and make them a cute Valentine or you can go for a store bought option and get them a box full of their favorite candy and a cute little stuffed animal. Or if you don't want to spend money just make them a nice dinner and watch a cute movie. A cute food for Valentine's Day is chocolate covered strawberries or a cliché heart pizza. Recipe below. Heart shaped pizza!

1) If using classic crust: Heat oven to 425°F. Lightly spray or grease large cookie sheet. If using thin crust: Heat oven to 400 F. Spray or grease 15x10-inch or larger dark or nonstick cookie sheet.

2) Unroll dough on work surface. With sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut dough into 4 rectangles. Place the rectangles on a cookie sheet. Cut 1-inch slit in center of wide edge of each dough portion; on opposite wide edge across from slit, pinch dough together to shape point of heart. Slightly separate each cut slit, and gently press dough into a 6x5-inch heart, creating slight rim on edge of dough. 3) Divide pizza sauce evenly onto hearts, spreading to within 1/2 inch of edges. Top each with 6 slices pepperoni and 3 tablespoons cheese. 4) Bake classic crust 13 to 16

University of California: Berkeley is located in Berkeley, California, and is primarily a residential campus. The town of Berkeley itself, has a very “college town” feeling. There are tons of little shops and always-friendly people around wanting to pursue new friendships. This prestigious school is extremely difficult to be admitted to. Incoming freshmen hold a GPA of a 4.0 or higher. Not only does grade point average matter, but also, work experience, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities take a big role in being accepted. Berkeley is well known for their outstanding Social Sciences, Biology, and Engineering majors. Students that attend Berkeley often land a job right out of college because they make many connections while they are studying their major. Sports and school spirit is something that this UC does not lack. Football and Basketball are the most popular sporting events at UC Berkeley. If you are an overachiever and always pushing to better your education, then UC Berkeley is perfect for you.

A Los Banos teacher and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony charges in connection with allegations of a sexual relationship with at least one teenage student, according to Merced County Superior Court records. His girlfriend and co-defendant, 22-year-old Devyn M. Egan, also has been charged with six felony counts involving one alleged victim, including unlawful sexual intercourse and oral copulation with a minor, court records show.

Gary A. Bettencourt, 40, has been charged with 13 felonies, including unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation with minor, and lewd acts upon a child, prosecutors confirmed. Phone calls to the attorneys representing the two defendants were not returned Wednesday. Bettencourt and Egan have been accused of having sex with one of Bettencourt’s students, a 17-year-old girl, multiple times from April through June of last year, according to the court records. Bettencourt also has been charged with

having sexual relationships with at least two other underage victims.

He is charged with committing lewd acts on a 15-year-old girl in late 2003 and early 2004 and oral copulation with another girl who was under 18 in late 2006, according to court records. If convicted, the Pacheco High School English teacher faces up to nine years and four months in state prison and would register as a sex offender for life, according to the Merced County District Attorney’s Office. Bettencourt and Egan were arrested Feb. 3 at his Turlock home. Bettencourt posted bail the following day and was released from the Merced County jail, according to booking records. She faces up to six years in state prison and also would be required to register as a sex offender if convicted, prosecutors said. Egan remained in custody

Former coach against his old team By: Miguel Mejia

Former Los Banos High School coach has transferred to Merced to coach at Golden Valley. This man was a good coach, he ran a good program and his records were more than likely over 5-5. The former coach Stubbs, as well as coach Caropreso, agreed to play against each other this season. They both have run a good program and it should be a good match up. Caropreso who is now the head coach of ours Tigers is a determined and hard working coach. He knows how to get players where they need to go to play at their best. As well as Dennis Stubbs, the years he was here to coach the football team was very well. Maybe it was the generation of teens he had or it was his coaching. They both have talent in that field of management and coaching, In the upcoming football season they have planned out to play the third game of the season. It is set for these two coaches or buddies to coach against each other. Dustin Caropreso once had said “Hey coach, why don‘t we just play each other?” And from there it was planned. It’ll be a good experience for these coaches, even if it may feel weird because one coach use to coach the opposite team it can possibly cause more intensity and a better game.

Wednesday at the John Latorraca Correctional Center, according to records. Bettencourt has been placed on administrative leave from the district and Egan, a substitute teacher in Stanislaus County, has been inactivated from those duties, authorities have said.

(Continued) Wicca, the Modern Day Witchcraft

By Alton Hughes

Boys Versus Girls By: Mikayla Akers

Ladies, we’ve all been in one of those aggravating situations when a boy says he can do something better than you. A big topic, and one of the most popular ones is sports, and not just necessarily knowing how to play them physically, but also the concepts and rules of the all the different kinds of sports. A huge majority of boys think that they know more about sports than girls, and some of them might, but for almost every boy to just assume that they do, is ridiculous.

Girls can know just as much about sports as boys can. We can even play them better than some boys. We can run just as fast, throw just as far, catch just as good, and hit just as hard. Also, I’m not saying that all of us do, but we all have the potential to. We can also watch sports if we want, some of us might not know all the rules but we have the right we watch it if we want to. Next time a boy tries to start one of these annoying arguments, just ignore them because you know what you can do and they're irrelevant.

Wicca is a Neopagan religion that started in the early nineteenth century, a new natural religion that gradually evolved. It gathered momentum in the mid-twentieth century. There is no official text of Wicca; instead it is a religion of life and of nature, not of "the book" such as Christianity or Judaism. Because Wicca is a pagan religion, it has ancient roots in many other religions and cultural beliefs like the Greeks, Romans, or Egyptians, and worship deities found in these different cultures. A lot of the world today believes that Wicca is an evil form of witchcraft that promotes Satanism, which is not true in any way. Wiccans, or witches as some may call themselves, believe more in the good of life and nature and shun the bad and evil. Wiccan prayers and rituals are referred to as spells or magic, which are nothing like what you’d see in a fantasy tale. Spells are just simple, sometimes poetic, incantations that invoke the powers of the god(s) they are praying to. Some Wiccans practice their religion in groups called covens in which they all pray together or engage in ritual. Plenty of Wiccans also believe in reincarnation, another life after death, and that their spirit may carry on. Wicca has become more accepted over the years and has been accepted as a religion of its own. For more information on Wicca and witchcraft, search Google or go to your local library.

Anime Recommendations By: Rachel Gokay

Have you ever watched Anime? Yes, no? Either way, it is super duper awesome and you should watch it. In order for

you to do so, I am going to give you my top 5 favorite anime shows that I enjoyed to the fullest. Hope you enjoy!

1. “Angel Beats” - This anime is about a certain teenage boy named Otonashi, who had died. He woke up in the afterlife, and soon learned that it was no pretty place. The afterlife was modeled after a high school, so that when they died they could fulfill any attachments, or let go of the past before passing on. Right after Otonashi woke up, he met a group that was in a battle with a girl named Angel. Angel was apparently believed to be a spy for God by the battle group, so they fought and rebelled at every moment. The group does not want to pass on because they feel they have a right to be “alive in the moment” and they also don’t want to be reincarnated as sea foam. Will Otonashi join the battle? Will the group ever decide on a name? (Also, this anime has mild and mature content, so this is a warning).

2. “Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo” - Are you looking for excitement, weirdness, and a nose-hair fighter? Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is

known for its strangeness, but let me tell you from experience that this is one of the best anime out there. The main plot for this anime is about making everyone bald, or without hair. The Hero of this story is Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, who is defeating the hair hunting troops, and kicking butt with his nose hairs. His group consists of a normal teenager called Beauty, a gassy teenager named Gasser, and the Hajike leader, Don Patch. Together, they go on this strange adventure to face even stranger villains, and to go get some ice cream. (A lot of weird stuff goes on, so this is a warning for your mental state of mind).

3. “Cowboy Bebop” - An easygoing bounty hunter who goes on adventures with his partners in this action packed anime.

Tears were shed, but laughter was constant during this amazing show. Great characters, fantastic plot, and overall the best music soundtrack. If you like cowboys and food, you should check this one out. (Violence is consistent with this show, remember this before watching).

4. “Little Witch Academia” - This isn’t an anime series, but it is a good thirty minute anime movie. Join Akko in this

magical adventure when she enters Luna Nova Magical Academy and discovers the magic inside. She came to the school because she was inspired at a young age by a witch named Shiny Chariot. Akko is a lovable, selfish, and joyful character throughout the whole short, but is not complete without her friends Lotte and Sucy. The magic awaits! (This is a kid friendly one, but it is funny for adults as well).

5. “Princess Arete” - Once again, this one is also an anime movie, but it is awesome. The clever Princess Arete is bored

with her life at the castle, especially when she is going to be wed to whoever brings her back the most magical and precious artifact. She then meets a witch in her room, who explains a little about magic to her. Once the witch is gone, the princess tries to escape the town with a traveling circus, but to no avail. She then is magically turned into a proper princess by a magician who wants her hand. Princess Arete goes on this strange adventure with only her mind and a magic ring to help her. (I really loved this one, I hope you do too).
