Library News,Kathryn Trahan

December is a good time toenjoy some of the Christmasstories we have in our library.Watch the display racks forsuggestions. We have a newaddition to our large-printfiction section. It is called “TheHolly and the Ivy”, and it waswritten by Fern Michaels. Thereis a traditional Christmas Carolcalled “The Holly and Ivy.” Inthis book Holly and Ivy are twoof the characters. The holidayseason is especially difficult forIvy Macintosh. Since a planecrash claimed the lives of herhusband and her three-year-oldtwins eight years ago, she hasbeen lost in grief. Then onenight 11-year-old HollyGreenwood knocks on her door, lost and frightened after aforbidden singing lesson. Hollydreams of performing in anupcoming Christmas musicalprogram, but her father, Daniel, doesn’t allow music in theirhome. He refuses to give a goodreason, just as he refuses to talkabout Holly’s mother. Ivy has noidea how closely she and Danielare linked by their tragic pasts, yet she is drawn to the warmthbeneath his gruff exterior. Theirconcern for Holly draws Ivy backto the world and to a family thatneeds her as much as she needsthem. Look for this book as wellas other Christmas stories in ourlibrary. All of the libraryvolunteers wish you a very MerryChristmas.

Meet Virgil Linder, a barberfor fifty-six years before retiringhere in The Cloisters. Virgil isnot without at least one claim tofame, however. A few years agowhen candidate for governorRick Scott was running for the1st time, he stopped by SalonBlondie in DeLand for a haircut. He asked Virgil if he had ever cutthe hair of anyone famousbefore? Virgil said he had not:“No celebrities or candidates forgovernor or president.” AfterScott was elected Governor ofFlorida, Virgil could not say thatanymore. Not that Scott’scelebrity had impressed him atall that much, but the fact thatScott never paid for that haircutwill never be forgotten by Virgilor his family. Barbara Conner

The Ice BowlFootball players take the field

in all kinds of weather, but onegame in particular stands out forits Arctic conditions. OnDec. 31, 1967, at Lambeau Field, the Green Bay Packers hostedthe Dallas Cowboys in thecoldest game in NFL history. With a temperature of13 degrees below zero and awind chill of minus 47, thematchup was nicknamed the“Ice Bowl.” At kickoff, a referee’smetal whistle froze to his lips, soofficials shouted signals duringthe game. The Packers froze outthe Cowboys 21–17 and wenton to win Super Bowl II.
