Director General’s Report to Council by Michael Chechile New Appointment I would like to begin my report by congratulating our chair of our Council of Commissioners, Su- anne Stein Day, who, along with her duties as Chair of this Coun- cil, will also be taking on the re- sponsibilities of Vice-President of the Quebec English School Boards Association. School Visits and Convocations Again this month, I was very pleased to have the opportunity to visit various schools within our system and again it went a long way towards fulfilling my need to be out there and to see where creative thinking becomes shared learning. I took a selfie with St. Anthony students, par- ticipated in a fire drill at West- park, saw an election simulation at Beechwood and learnt about hurricanes at Terry Fox school. It is always such a pleasure to have a chance to communicate direct- ly with teachers and students. I had the privilege of attending the Macdonald High School gradua- tion. These young people inspire a great deal of confidence, and are very bright, motivated and engaged. I also participated in the first convocation held by the Lester B. Pearson Vocational Col- lege on Saturday, which saw 225 Computing Support students and 40 Accounting Studies students graduate. Congratulations to the graduates, as well as to College faculty and staff on this impor- tant first. Digital Citizenship Book Dr. Mike Ribble, the pioneer- ing Digital Citizenship guru, has published his new book, entitled “Digital Citizenship in Schools: Nine Elements All Students Should Know”. The Lester B. Pearson Digital Citizenship Pro- gram is featured prominently in the chapter entitled “Creating a Digital Citizenship Program,” and the sample lesson plan included in the book’s second appendix also originates with our board. Dr. Ribble sent us a signed copy of the book by way of thanks for our contribution to the book. Google Leadership Symposium It was a privilege to host the Montreal Google Leadership Symposium on October 21st. Cierra Leitman and Tyler Nacke are both secondary 4 students, Cierra from Lindsay Place High School and Tyler from John Rennie High School. Our Student Commissioners have, for 4 years now, added so much to our Council table. Their perspec- tive is unique and their willing- ness to participate is wonderful. I know that both Cierra and Tyler have already been busy with the rest of the Central Students’ Com- mittee, getting organized and working on important initiatives like their response to the Major School Change consultation. Speaking of which, this week marks the deadline to submit briefs for Major School Change. Thank you to the many who have already done so. I’ve read many “out of the box” suggestions for improving Lester B. Pearson schools. Thank you for the pas- sion that is so obvious from your briefs. Together, I’m certain that we can come up with models that will help us move forward to con- tinue to prepare our students for their futures in this ever-chang- ing environment. Next week, we will make the briefs public and that will be followed by our pub- lic hearings in mid-November. Les- ter B. Pearson School Board was an active participant in the gala ceremony held the evening of the 21st at the Marché Bonsecours in the Old Port. In the local peace- maker category, the Family and School Support and Treatment Team (FSSTT) was honoured for its work supporting students with behavioural and social challenges and creating therapeutic learning environments for all. “We are grateful for the recogni- tion from the YMCA in helping move forward their mission to- ward peace in our community,” says Rita McDonough, Coor- dinator of FSSTT. “Promoting empathy, building respect, and involving the school community in intervention plans for students and their families has always been the goal of FSSTT.” A service housed within the Stu- dent Services Department, the FSSTT provides assistance to students experiencing social and behavioural difficulties and pro- motes social-emotional learning in schools. Through inclusive practices, the team works to cre- ate an enriching and positive learning environment and to as- sist schools in preventing con- flicts and bullying. Launched in 1995 as a pilot proj- ect, the team has since evolved into a critical service that benefits the entire Lester B. Pearson School Board community. The team for- mally operates in 13 elementary schools and 5 high schools, but is available to support all LBPSB schools that request the services of the team. In each of the FSSTT schools, a behaviour technician provides interventions in support of stu- dents who may be experiencing behavioral and academic diffi- culties. These interventions may involve working directly with the student or supporting the class- room and resource teachers. As well, non-teaching professionals assist by supporting the educa- tors involved with students and families. These professionals have experience working in school set- tings and have advanced train- ing in such areas as youth men- tal health, creative arts therapies, and child development. The philosophy underlying the team’s approach is to consider all who are involved in a student’s life to be a contributing member and part of the intervention plan. Thus, administrators, classroom teachers, resource teachers and non-teaching professionals from within the school milieu (e.g., psychologists) and community (e.g., psychiatrists, social work- ers) engage in a collaborative problem-solving process to better understand the child’s difficulties and create an intervention plan. The team also works on a broad- er level to support schools by offering ongoing professional development through its news- letter, lending library, mental health evening lecture series, and specific workshops to school staff on a variety of topics. In this way, the FSSTT contributes to LBPSB’s overall strategic plan objectives to increase student achievement and contribute to safe and caring learning environ- ments. FSSTT Awarded YMCA Peace Medal Dr. Cindy Finn, Director of Student Sevices, receives the YMCA Peace Medal on behalf of the FSSTT What an action-packed month it has been! October 1st dawned bright and and a very brisk 6º for the Golf Tournament. The forecast prom- ised mid-teens by 3pm, but lo- and-behold, at 11:00am the wind died right down and we hit 16º. A happy bunch of golfers and volunteers enjoyed a glorious day and raised $40,000. October 18th was not quite as warm…it actually snowed on the field. But that did not stop 1000 LBPSB students and staff and their families from enjoying the Alouettes/Ti-Cats game at Molson Stadium, raising another $2000 for PEF! In between, PEF processed all the payments for the annual Con- cordia-LBPSB Leadership Work- shop on October 18-19 for all interested members of the LBPSB community, just one more way PEF works to enhance education- al life for our stakeholders. The Grants Committee met and distributed $37,000 to schools and classroom for projects for the 2015/16 school year, and hopes to distribute more, pend- ing anticipated funding. Requests are coming in steadily from our schools for new snowsuits and boots, supplied through PEF’s Rona Cupak Winter Wear Fund. Once again Mr. Edward Binet, president of Ested Industries has provided top quality snowsuits at cost price. There are many angels. And now for our latest newest Fund Raising Venture: Purple Hockey Tape PEF has received a generous donation of 60 cases, each con- taining 45 rolls of professional quality purple hockey tape which normally retails for $4.00/roll. We are selling them for $45.00 per case (i.e. $1/roll) to any in- terested teams, organizations, schools or individuals. Thank you, Don Riopel and Cantech. Save big money and look sharp on the ice. Stein Day, from page A1contributions to the Foundation that will be used to fund innova-tive projects in our classrooms. Thank you to all the volunteer organizers and to all the golfers and sponsors who made the day possible, with special mention to our Platinum sponsor Edu-Edge.

Thank you also to the Founda-tion for a fun day at the Alouettes game. Over 1000 LBPSB rep-resentatives came out to cheer. While the Als didn’t win that one, it was a wonderful day with a lot of spirit in the stands.

Discover the Stars is an annual event that I always look forward to. Hosted by the West Island Chamber of Commerce, many West Island businesses present bursaries to students going on to continue their education in the sciences. Congratulations to Amilya Di Iorio-Decker & Tasmia Islam, Lakeside Academy, Shee-na Connolly, John Rennie High School, Jamie Halperin, Lindsay Place High School, Hannah Drin-kell, Yanni Stavrakis, Caterina Giannini & Kathy Nodzynski, St. Thomas High School, Michael Sedlezky, Riverdale High School and Choe Pereira-Kelton, Bea-consfield High School on win-ning bursaries. Kathy Nodzynski, former Student Commissioner and CSC Chair also won the pres-tigious Aileen Proudfoot Memo-rial Award.

I’m sure the elections are still on everyone’s mind – at least if social media is any indication. Congratulations to Prime Minis-ter Designate, Justin Trudeau and all the successful candidates. Did you know that 13 LBPSB schools actively participated thanks to the CIVIX organization? This group provided the same signage, bal-lot boxes and voting booths that were used at the Federal voting stations and ballots with local candidates’ names on them. The votes have been tallied, and, as has been the case for the last few elections, the students’ choices have very closely mirrored Cana-da’s choice. Thank you to CIVIX for this incredible learning op-portunity.

Fall grads are now taking place with two more this week. As al-ways, it is an honour to be there to witness the success of our high school and continuing education graduates. Your pride is well earned. Go with confidence. We all look forward to hearing about your future successes.

Discover the Stars event at John Abbott College

The West Island Chamber of Commerce’s annual Discover the Stars event is always an enjoyable way to familiarize myself with some of the West Island’s up-and-coming young people, and this year’s event was no exception. This program disburses funds in the form of grants to exceptional young people, not strictly based on academic performance but on personality, community interest, motivation and desire to advance particularly in sciences and hu-manities.

ERDI conferenceI recently had the pleasure of

attending the Education, Re-sources, Development and In-novation Fall Conference. This group brings together senior school board leaders from across the country with senior execu-tive personnel from major sup-pliers of services in North Amer-ica, providing an opportunity for educators to explain their service needs and for the educators to re-spond. This was an exciting and thought-provoking session.

Michael Chechile Directeur général Commission scolaire Lester B. Pearson

October 16, 2015 TEACHER AND CARETAKER STRIKE: CLOSING OF ESTABLISHMENTS AT THE LBPSB OCTOBER 29, 2015 Dear parents, Due to a strike including teachers and caretakers, all of our schools and daycare services will be closed on Thursday October 29th, 2015. Since all of our 4 unions are negotiating with the provincial government, we cannot guarantee that non-striking unions on October 29th will cross the picket lines. Our school board cannot guarantee the safety of the students and that services will not be affected on that day. Consequently, all daycare services on October 29th, 2015 are cancelled. Therefore, there will be no school or daycare for students. Other strikes days are being planned depending on the evolution of the negotiations. October 23, 2015 Support staff: CLOSING OF ESTABLISHMENTS AT THE LBPSB NOVEMBER 4th, 2015 Dear parents, Due to a strike of our support staff which includes school secretaries, integration aides, daycare staff, library technicians, data processing operators, etc., all of our schools and daycare services will be closed on Wednesday November 4th, 2015. Since all of our 4 unions are negotiating with the provincial government, we cannot guarantee that non-striking unions on November 4th by solidarity will cross the picket lines. Our school board cannot guarantee the safety of the students and that services will not be affected on that day. Consequently, daycare services are cancelled. Therefore, there will be no school or daycare for students. Other strikes days are being planned mid-November depending on the evolution of the negotiations. The media has publicized other dates which have yet to be confirmed by any official document. We will update you as soon as the dates are confirmed. The unions must give the board at least 7 working days’ notice. We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes and thank you for your understanding. Michael Chechile Director General Lester B.
