SCAVENGER HUNTInternational Committee

Hosts First Event

On a sunny Thursday afternoon of October 25th,

the International Project Committee held their first event,

the Halloween Scavenger Hunt. Upon arrival to the grass

area in front of Agora Stage, the students were placed

into teams and were sent on a scavenger hunt through

the campus to find large puzzle pieces that later formed

into a huge picture of the world with different flags around

it.

The event had a huge turn out of freshmen

students who had a great time and enjoyed the event.

The team that won the scavenger hunt was ecstatic and

proud of themselves for arriving first and despite having

finished they were still eager to help the other groups out.

Participants were also given goodie bags that they

enjoyed and the winning team received extra credit for

their GS class.

The event that highlighted our school’s diversity

gave freshmen participants the chance to bond and

enjoy the afternoon. The International Committee

extends their gratitude to everyone who attended. Please

watch out for their future events!

Peer Mentors Collaborates with Athleticsfor Fan Appreciation BBQ and Soccer Game

Throughout October the Peer Mentor Services has been collaborating with ASI to promote our

schools soccer team. On October 26, 2012 the CSU East Bay Pioneers - Soccer team played the Tritons of

UC San Diego. At the game they offered free BBQ, drinks, and chips during half time. There was a great turn

out of students who attended the game, from both CSUEB and UCSD. Unfortunately our women’s soccer

team lost, while the men’s soccer team’s score was tied. However, this did not stop the CSUEB students from

having a good time and cheering on for their fellow students.

There was a good amount of peer mentors who came that day, helping promote the program while

contributing to the enthusiasm of the game. Even freshmen students came out to support both their schools

team, and their peer mentors. During the halftime of the Men’s game the peer mentors present got to play

against the ASI committee, in a friendly game of soccer. One of the mentors, Mark, won the game ball signed

by the players at the end of the game, which is now on display in the office. This is just one of many other

amazing soccer games that our school’s team has played.

What a way to start the month of November, by breaking the ice.

The Peer Mentor Club Committee held an Icebreaker Night event, on

the 1st of November, and what a great turn out it had. People were

enthusiastic and eager to get the ball rolling as they poured into the

room. There were GS and International students who came out to

participate. It was exciting to have native English speakers and students

from abroad conversing amongst themselves.

Once things got into actions and the Icebreakers started, people

seemed to have relaxed enjoyed themselves, since all that was heard

was laughter. People were starting to get really creative with the first

icebreaker, Two Truths and a Lie. As it proceeded onto the Speed

Dating, everyone learned a few interesting things about their peers,

even getting into deep conversations. Lastly groups had to come up

with their own icebreakers, showing that anyone is capable of getting

creative when it comes to breaking the ice with others.

Why did you decide to become a Peer Mentor?

I decided to become a peer mentor because I wasn't really involved in high schoolso I wanted to change that in college. What are you looking forward to most this year being a Peer Mentor?

Bonding with my students is something I'm looking forward to.What one advice can you give a freshmen?

Manage and enjoy the time you have.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself possibly working for a large company.Do you have an obsession? If so, what?

I have an obsession with nutty bars. Through my whole life so far I have eaten a very large number of them.

Connie ArteagaWhy did you decide to become a Peer Mentor?

I wanted to become a peer mentor because of personal experience. I know itwas difficult to get used to college life so soon after high school, and I thinkhaving someone there for you is an invaluable resource. What are you looking forward to most this year being a Peer Mentor?

The thing I am looking forward to most this year about being a peer mentor isthe (hopefully) strong, professional peer-student bond I will make with mystudents. What one advice can you give a freshmen?

My advice: Breathe. Chill. Relax. Eat. And ask someone for help when youneed it. Every university resource is for you to use. These are in no particularorder. You can do multiple at a time.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I hope to have made a difference in the public school educationalsystem, specifically in the “minority” cities, more specifically Los Angeles.Do you have an obsession? If so, what?

I am absolutely obsessed with Harry Potter. I am the human HP encyclopedia.

PEER MENTORS ON THE SPOTLIGHT

Allison MathisenWhy did you decide to become a Peer Mentor?

I decided to become a Peer Mentor because I loved having one in my GS class and wasvery interested in the program. I also wanted to gain classroom experience because I wantto be a teacher. What are you looking forward to most this year being a Peer Mentor?

I'm looking forward to working hand in hand with my faculty, as well as getting to know mystudents on a more personal level and bonding with my fellow Peer Mentors. What one advice can you give a freshmen?

One piece of advice I'd love to give to a freshman is to get a hard copy of the coursecatalog. It's SO helpful when choosing your classes to be able to see all the courses youneed to take right there on the page.Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I'm such an indecisive person, it's hard to give exact details. But in 10 years, I hope I'mhappy. That's all that really matters.Do you have an obsession? if so, what?

My obsessions? Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Musical Theatre. They're all key elements ofmy life.
